XDefiant is just released and is very popular. It feels like an old school CoD game and that's appealing to a lot of the current dissatisfied CoD playerbase. This video is my impressions, review, and thoughts about it taking over Call of Duty. I'm going to be talking about the Gunplay, battle pass, leveling, attachments, Maps, netcode, ranked mode, SBMM, and the hero shooter type abilities. There will be lots of comparisons to the CoD franchise.

Indeed. No fps can come close. The satisfaction of killing in cod is second to none with killstreaks finishing moves blood and gore. Sbmm eomm will kill cod not kiddie xdefiant. But comp is what cod needs tho
People need to stop searching for a “COD killer” and just enjoy the game if you enjoy it. 2 games of the same genre can coexist, one doesn’t need to “die”.
Ikr, the dev team literally already said they aren’t looking to kill cod they just wanna offer another competitive option. If anything this should motivate cod to make better games but they don’t care regardless lol

It’s not the cod killer everyone was hyping it up to be but definitely a welcomed new shooter that’s super fun

I could be a paid version of COD Multi Player killer. Nobody is going to purchase the next COD game for the Campaign and/or Multiplayer if this free game exists, and maybe more fun because no SBMM. Its not going to effect COD warzone in anyway, unless this IP grows into a Battle Royale. Which I think it should be supported enough to dip its toe into that market in the future. Especially since the skins, maps, character and play styles can cater to any Ubisoft game from AC, Far Cry, Division ect. It has great potential.
The only thing I don't like is the lack of realism and the arcadiness of it all the abilities etc
I prefer the realistic weapons and maps not colorful maps with sci-fi abilities kinda ruins it for me

@@joshbibb2527 Thats what I was thinking. The game feels nothing like OG MW2. The guns were better, the theme was better, the maps were better. The only thing XDefiant and MW2 have in common is the horrible balancing.
Xdefiant matchmaking is so much faster than modern cod it's scary.

Hey, I helped on the game too. I totally didn't expect to see my name in the credits. Pretty freaking cool! I did love the fact that I had EVERYTHING unlocked for the launch and the special bonuses. I'm having a blast playing it indeed as well
People need to just stop calling new shooters CoD killers and setting up expectations. Just have fun and that’s that

If The Finals couldn't hold on to the majority of their audience for more than a couple months i don't see what chance any Arcade FPS has in this generation... COD will stay on top for as long as we keep looking at it as something that needs to be killed, calling anything that comes close a "cod killer" is only giving a boost to COD, it's not a compliment to the new game, it's a positive connotation in COD's favour that only further solidifies the fact the only thing that can kill COD IS COD!
100%, also he only upside to not being on steam is people can't see player numbers & get dissuaded from playing when number inevitably go down but a big downside to that is people will use twitch as a gauge to how well it's doing instead which is arguably worse

A game doesn’t always need to be innovative or have its own unique game mode. This game knows what it wants to be, and it does it extremely well. It’s a fast paced, run and gun arena shooter with match making that has an organic feel to it, like the old cods had. That’s what I’ve been missing for the past 6+ years in cod... PUB STOMPING IS BACK AND I COULDNT BE MORE HAPPY

This game is awesome. It feels so good to know that just because I play well one game I’m not going to be punished by some arbitrary matchmaking system in the next few games. Have had good games and bad games, but it never feels like I’m being penalised by the game.
On the topic of gamemodes, Xdefiant's Hot Shot is like Kill Confirmed but it incorporates a VIP system that actually puts a fun twist on it.

After like the 8th "cod killer" have we not realised it cant be killed by competitors? Definitely via self destruction but acting like 90% of cod killers actually have the potential to kill the franchise is a bit delusional

To be a true cod killer you would need obviously no sbmm and all the bullshit algos(you could have a very low sbmm like the old cods) that arcade feel, 60 fps, great maps, solid hit detection, but above all: killstreaks. Alot of people don't realize killstreaks/scorestreaks/pointstreaks, as well Nukes and Moabs is what made cod that great and provided that rush and addiction factor. The fact that you could get in a lobby alone and destroy an entire team, even if yours was bad was the cod magic. Take killstreaks out and all of a sudden Cod doesn't have as much replay and fun factor. It would still one of the biggest games because of all the other factors but it wouldn't be as addictive. The proof is in all the other fps shooters out there, who quite never reached Cod's heights.
What other “CoD Killers” have even come out. I can’t think of any besides this one and I’m definitely not gonna include stuff like Siege or battlefield. Idk what other CoD style arcade shooters even exist besides xdefiant… splitgate was more similar to halo imo so yeah I can’t think of any others. I certainly can’t think of 8

This game can succeed if Ubisoft doesn’t screw it up , there’s so much potential in this game and I can’t wait to see how this game will evolve into in the future.
I respect your optimism. Personally this game seems so lifeless, zero character. Even though they're old Ubi characters, they look so dull and boring. The movement and controller aiming is clunky at best. AA is too strong, nobody will be missing a bullet. Maps are too large and there's no search and destroy mode. Which to me is absolutely bonkers.
Given Ubisoft's track record, that is too optimistic, I'm afraid.
R6S had basically gotten massacred with the pile of nerfs they just throw in.
All I want is MW19 movement and gunplay, pick 10 create a class and none of the rechargeable stuff like dead silence/Trophy/deployable cover etc.
MW19 movement was complete AIDS, unless you’re talking about the absolutely broken slide cancel. Other than that, MW19 was 💩. Everything else you want simply won’t happen.
I don’t understand why people are saying this game is bad. This is genuinely the most fun I’ve had on a FPS shooter in years.

I don't like it but that's probably because I'm really bad at it.
I personally don't like hero shooters. OP abilities kill it for me. I don't hate it or love it. I would play it more if it had a Search type mode. Outside of COD Ranked, I haven't played normal core modes outside of Search in years. It is cool to have another FPS, but it is not like the second coming of Christ like some are making it out to be.

Unless they get the hit registration and server lag fixed sadly it won’t last long. Still dying behind corners and dying in some gunfights I know I won. I’m hoping they get it fixed because it could definitely be fun.
It’s bound to happen. It happens with every large multiplayer online game at launch.
Testing can only take you so far compared to at scale.
It’s why games launch mid week so they can fix and patch for the weekend.

On the point where ranked is going to drive a lot of the game success, I agree, but i am very nostalgic of the black ops 3 camo/hero skin grind, which prospered from good maps and gunplay, and I think this game has that potential if the skins/camo grind experience can tap into what that used to feel like in a game like BOPS3, esp with no SBMM
As someone who played the original mw3, bo2, and ghost on release. I'd happily play this game for a long period of time. I don't think it was a big risk doing so. Cod has been missing my money and most of my friends money because it just isn't the same and this free game can now be our weekend game to play. If the gameplay is stellar they can always add on more content as time progresses. It doesn't need to be 4A quality game, it needs to be fun. If its fun, it'll go the distant and making it free and very easy to jump into is an amazing selling point.
There is definitely more advanced movement you can utilize. On controller, I was able to basically tap strafe by sliding, jumping, and turning my crosshairs mid jump. You lose very little momentum and the camera break is noticeable because I've had it done to me as well
I do like the way the game feels so far, but even in the welcome playlist, everyone has figured out that snipers are OP. They're impossible to contend with when it's a one shot kill with those from virtually any range. I like the design, I like the options, abilities, maps, virtually everything but the weapon balance needs quite a bit of tuning.
Dunno man Zone Control and Hotshot aren't something we've seen before, Zone Control is like Escort meets Conquest from Battlefield and Hotshot seems like Kill Confirmed with a twist that makes you actually want to get dogtags
My only problem for me for this game is hit boxes I have no idea why but you can get hit markers just to have no damage usually depends on connections which no one has perfect connections and no ping doesn't effect it. I have roughly 30-50 ping which isn't bad (Normal too for all games) but my connection seems to dip a lot while playing in certain matches having my bars of connection go from 5 down to 3 as if my servers aren't close enough to me.
Its possible too that Hit boxes are tied to connections for both you, and your opponent since half of the time I can get hit markers (I do have damage numbers for this explanation) but no damage numbers which really shows the flaws this game can have. Its fun but when stuff like that doesn't work there will be more issues than coming alone once it does get "Fixed".
The games hit registration is one of if not the worst i have every experienced in any shooter but the devs are already working on it so hopefully it gets fixed as soon as possible otherwise this game could die out quick
Not even close to a CoD killer. It's not bad by not means and will satisfy the CoD itch specially for those that don't want to buy MW. It's fun enough, so I'll give it that. Feel like the TTK can be very inconsistent sometimes though and the abilities need a bit of balancing such as the deployable shield.
I agree the ttk needs to be tweaked and messed with and idk if it’s a bug but I feel I die around corner even long after I’ve gotten cover but idk if it’s just me

sometimes i feel like my bullets go thu them and i dont get hitmarkers....like the bullets are to slow or its lag. then sometimes i spray and kill them in 2 seconds

I used to love the cod 6v6 modes. When I play the newer cods today it feels like the game can’t decide if it made for warzone or multiplayer. When I play Xdefiant it plays exactly how I remember the old cod games being. I played almost all day today with friends and by myself and enjoyed every game. If I play cod today I am actively not having fun. I’m curious to see how the ranked game modes shake out, but for me it fills that casual fun game.
Apparently, I'm bad when I thought I was above average since I'm getting pretty well stomped after DL this game yesterday. What's interesting, and the reason I thought I was above average in SBMM, is that I played COD as part of a group of 7 friends on our discord. Interestingly, each player is noticibly different in skill than the others, creating a situation where the 2nd to worst player could stomp the worst player, the 3rd worst player could stomp the 2nd worst player, etc. I ranked in as the 2nd best among us. What makes this kind of interesting is that if there are such vast skill divisions between the 7 of us, yet we're all anywhere from below average to downright bad relative to the overall player pool, then the number of different skill levels between all players must be incredibly vast with hundreds of skill levels rather than just good, bad, average.

I honestly love this game. I’m a controller player and love that there’s less aim assist AND there’s an aim assist slider. Often in mw3 I’m fighting the vertical aim assist when I’m trying to pull my weapon down or up. I love the map design and how players are highlighted. Now I can actually see someone standing in a corner instead of looking right at them and not noticing anything. I hope this game sends a message to other developers.
I love it. I cant stop playing it. I have over 40 hours of in game play time already.

No matter how bad the game is , not having sbmm makes it better than cod straight away . Sbmm is huuuge issue in games particularly in cod
This is the game iv been waiting for played 1 week of mw2 couldn’t stomach it anymore was a cod player going back to OG MW and really believe the game peaked in BO2 and fell off since then. It also doesn’t help that my career doesn’t leave time for me to game much anymore and since transitioning to pc iv been focusing on more realistic shooters like HHL, squad, Tarkov but I’m going to download this maybe get the old school og BO2 squad together and pub smash like the old days.
Happy to report the game does actually work on Linux/Steam Deck, and runs very well (they have enabled the BattlEye module for WINE). Though not being on Steam does make it a bit less straight forward. It can be played on all the usual Linux game launchers (Bottles, Lutris, Heroic, etc...) with WINE with some simple workarounds. I used Bottles and put several hours in over the past two days and it runs extremely well. Very happy they decided to enable this anti-cheat module, every CoD post-BO4 is unplayable on Linux because of the anti-cheat so this is a breath of fresh air.
Being free to play will help a lot.
My main gripe with the game is that the maps are awkward, too many openings, I swear half the time I die is because of a flank. The guns feel great, and I hope they start to bring more game modes and weapons.
Hey Drift0r why does the welcome playlist in this game say it has SBMM despite being in unranked?
So when you have just jumped in you don't get ganged by people who know the maps and have leveled up their weapons. Keeps you with the other noobs. Then you move on to the main game.

I am surprised there was no mention of the latency issues and HitReg inconsistencies, especially from someone like yourself who is usually deep in the numbers on stuff like that. Either way I’m hoping to see the game succeed and looking forward to another game to make content on besides Algorithm of Duty 😂
Some of the best games we've ever had weren't trying to revolutionize the genre, they took what the community says they want (Classic feeling arcade shooter/old school COD) and polish it. I hope this game does well.

I tried this last night played 2 games. Got insta melted constantly both games. I put half a clip in a guy and lose. Turn a corner and just die.

@@abrahamdelatorre3246 I don’t even find the walls ability to be broken. Mostly because people misuse it. You are notified when they can see you, just wait at a corner with a good angle because most just rush at you looking for a kill.

Hoping they bring back the classic prestige mode instead of the seasonal prestige BS. Also I might be wrong but does leveling up even matter? I’ve noticed that weapons and equipment is unlocked through challenges, do you get anything from the leveling system?

Excited to try this out again, last beta the game just felt weird I don't know if it was the TTK or hit reg but it felt off and I play old cods all the time.

Personally I feel like COD killed it self. It might now be in a different form but COD has not been COD for a long time. Hopefully this game can stand on it'd own feet and fade away

For a game like this that seemingly invests a lot into the casual gamer experience, I think the abilities are simply an inferior alternative to killstreaks. Killstreaks in CoD are, for me at least, what makes every game casually engaging without having to sweat for the win. It's an alternative payout in terms of fun and rewards. Killstreaks become a kind of mini challenge on their own and something to work towards. I think that, in older CoD titles without the SBMM really helped make the game less sweaty and more casual, as getting your streaks is a secondary goal rather than just winning the game. These abilities will likely feel a lot more frustrating to play against since they don't feel "earned" considering they're just on a timer, and thus will feel a lot more cheesy/cheap for the receiving side.
This game plays like Ghosts 2 and it was like riding a bike.
I love this game.
They need a classic prestige system in The unranked/Casual mode for the casual players who wants to grind
Other than a few games I haven’t had an issue with the ultimates. Most people can still be taken down quickly if you’re smart about it.
Game modes not being unique I think is fine for now. Lots of maps and more maps and guns coming that will make it wayyyyy better
Servers only took a few hours to clean up too. Haven’t had an issue since the exact launch

Im a console guy and a COD refugee. Unless Ubisoft fucks this up its my new home.
The gunplay feels great so far, and I've had no trouble yet with my connection (whereas COD is consistently a nightmare).
As a Finals player, I don't think this game will grab me at all, it's free so I'm going to try it but the finals brought something new to the table like you said. Its innovation was exactly what I was looking for in a new game to play and for me revived my love for the genre. This game looks cheap and like a knockoff of everything else, and if it wasn't free I feel like it would have failed immediately
I already uninstalled cod because the sbmm and eomm was just so insane for me and moving to a new job where i could not keep my skills in shape to compete with the demon sweats who seemed to have all day to olay but saying that even after completing orion, interstellar and borealis its time to move on and this game is insanely fun imo, first day was rocky but i played about 3 hours straight which i have not done in a game since bo2 or even og mw3 so because of lack of sbmm and eomm i can happily play it much much longer
I ll give a go, played it yesterday and it needs some improvements but it's a start. I am sick of cods aggressive sbmm so that's the main reason for me to give that game a try. It feels a little clunky and the gunfights are often weird but if they work on it, I think it can become a good game.

I'm a dad now, so I don't want to grind irons for weeks just to have a red dot available on every gun (let alone other attachments). I wanna sit down and play with whatever gun and attachments I want, as variety is what I find fun. Thanks for the heads up, I think I'll pass on this one!

I just wish they would fix hit detection. It’s so frustrating to clearly be landing shots on people just for them to kill me and it show them at 100% health

As someone who’s been boycotting call of duty for a few years getting on this really feels like a breath of fresh air. It’s become my new main shooter hands-down
I have been revisiting old titles like battlefield four to get a sense of non-steel based matchmaking, lobbies and casual gameplay with the opportunity to sweat if I want to.
I know that with time and some updates this game will start to gain real momentum as a new front runner for arcade style shooters.
They pulled what I have been saying call of duty should forever and went free to play. I’ve been saying that call of duty should go free to play for a long time. I think that it would be cool if call of duty just became call of duty online and they just dropped new campaigns for people to purchase along with a pack that gets added for the multiplayer so you don’t have to grind everything, same way everybody else dies like when you get new guns in Warzone, but no multiplayer to play them on. You can advance the guns with these campaign additions as an incentive to buy the campaign so each company can still get there piece of the pie when it’s their turn to drop a call of duty game.
It could be set up so simple where the call of duty online is just a gigantic multiplayer with different maps and modes kind of like the call of duty mobile experience but on console
then as each company takes their turn to drop game they also drop cosmetics And attachments for the guns that are part of that game that get added into the call of duty online atmosphere.
This is one way to do it another cool way that I can think of in my head is taking the call of duty multiplayer experience from past years and turning it into something similar to the master chief collection, where you have a launcher that has all the games and you’re able to easily select between each of them And you actually get to play on that game so the nostalgia is all there. The mechanics are all there no skill base matchmaking is all there. It feels like the old-school games for people who want to go play those old-school games and also includes the new games as well.
It gets added into this launcher or this gigantic atmosphere of call of duty that you can choose from to play on, and I think that this would be my preferred way to play call of duty if it was ever to happen this is what would bring me back.
Two ish weeks in and I’m still liking it. I guess I’m a prime candidate for the sort of nostalgia bait they’re going for as a curmudgeonly “CoD Golden Days” fan. There are some critiques I have tho, mostly about features I think are missing.
- I think the UI and HUD is aesthetically dull and kinda ugly. It’s not going anywhere at this point but it’s not remotely appealing visually
-where are the unlockable rewards? I lamented this ad nauseam with Halo Infinite as well. Challenges, calling cards, icons, stickers, etc give players something extra to go for during their games and reward us for exploring more that the game has to offer. This is a must.
-combat records mostly absent as well. The ability to track my stats in depth adds so much for me. The stats represent my cumulative body of work in a game, the more of them I can look at, the better.
-More factions from different franchises. I’m sure this will come, but I hope they get creative with lots of unique factions from Ubisoft’s rich wealth of franchises, including dusting off some older ones that haven’t seen lots of action recently.
-party games would be huge. Infected, knife only, one in the chamber, etc. would be welcome additions to keep the variety going.
Cod will always have its playerbase because of sbmm... and I can't wait to have some more fun in Xdefiant
In terms of gun play and design, this is the closet CoD competitor that has ever been released. However, without killstreaks, perks, etc I don’t know if it can TRUKY feel like a CoD killer.
There's TDM? I swear I checked for that considering that's my main mode I prefer to play in, but I didn't see it.
This game isn’t trying to steal away the divisions audience or any other connecting Ubisoft game franchises. It’s supposed to draw in people who hav tempted those games as a cool gimmick and be like oh wow we’re playing on a map based off this location from a game I loved. This is so radically different from any other story game Ubisoft has made
Also Valorant is a PC only game, and console is where most ppl play. If you are looking for a casual multiplayer shooter on console the only real competitors are Overwatch, cod and BF. And I think it does plenty to earn a sizable pool of those players, and others that have just left the space. Like I have only played r6 for the past decade because I can’t stand the new cods, and I’m not huge into overwatch or Battlefield.
So I think the game feels great EXCEPT the number of times the kill cam/ death cam/ body dropping when I’m behind cover or the wall or anything feels so bad. I’m dying when I should be safe and my ping is like 30 what is the issue!?
We do this every spring I swear. Another shooter like splitgate and will fizzle away in a month or two
I don’t understand why everyone keeps saying that it’s hard to level up guns. It only takes like 35 kills to level up each level so that should only take people 1-2 games

this game is nothing like CoD tbh. Old school feel maybe....but nothing like CoD. It has its own purpose imo
Wepon leveling is so bad in this game that every gun levels up exactly the same, and wow, what a grind to level the weapons

There will be absolutely more players in casual mode than ranked. The whole selling point was no SBMM. It's not ment to lean too heavily on competitive.
For me it was hard to aim at first time but after got used to it, it is very fun to play. I am still not good as other game like Halo which I play most of time, but it is good to have less SBMM driven game so... good for me!
I'd say it's aight. Still needs some tweaking when it comes to weapons and abilities. But I wont touch it untill the hitreg is fixed
