Stop, no, you can't take that. We were gonna build a railroad through here to try and get some warm water
How 'bout maybe you chill
Grand Wizard Miller so Russia builds their railway supervised by a shit ton of soldiers
And when the railroad was complete they downgraded to a fuckton of soldiers did I say downgrade I mean upgrade
Boats
(Gun)boats
Bill Wurtz vid of japan history.
Man, the Japanese have a fetish for crippling Pacific Fleets
Vanguard Actual Yeah I'm guessing they figured that it worked well against the Russians so why not try it again?
Dean Cutler they even did it against the German Pacific Fleet in WWI!
" so they will not be burn for ETERNITY in hell by the loving JESUS"
Oh the irony
The Japanese tried Christianity once. Lets just say it didn't go so well.
And at the end, their pacific fleet has been annihilated.

Fuck
Balls
Boy, I knew this war was a flop for Russia, but that Baltic fleet takes the cake.
Fun fact kill ratio of that shitty fleet against unarmed fishermen was 2:3.
Here is full story of that unmitigated disaster that was second Pacific squadron. It honestly deserves a movie.
i.imgur.com/jIHYWdh.jpg
amazing you have my thanks sir
Russia literally lost all there modern battleships in that battle. Also japan had superior battleships built in the UK so basically japan was fighting a obsolete force.
they should make a movie about that baltic fleet
more like it takes the snake!
How on Earth do you mistake British ships for a Japanese Fleet in the middle of the Baltic Sea
RogueSkull Japan and Britain were allies, Japan was even buying navy ships from Britain.
I guess the Russians thought that the Japanese would have sailors in Britain so that they could sail the ships back to Japan.
But instead of sailing back, they thought they might attack their fleet instead.
With a few bottles of vodka you can mistake anything for anything
probably brits needed a reason to sabotage russians fighting their allies
russian cant into geography
Actually, there was a report according to which some Japanese mine ships moved from Japan to the Britan's shores. That's why Russians were on the alert. Then they noticed ships that didn't have lights at night so they confused it. Also, there were the misunderstanding between the admiral and other officers so ships started the attack without command.
My little country Montenegro, located on the Balkans declared war on Japan in 1904 to support the Russians, some soldiers were sent all the way to the east to fight. Funny thing is Montenegro and Japan made peace in 2006 :D So we were at war for 102 years and we didn't even know it :D
Russia is still at war with Japan. We didn't sign peace agreement yet.

It’s like Civ V city states
Not only that but Montenegrin soldier by the name of Lekso Saicic beheaded one of best Japanese swordsmen in duel during the war. I am from Montenegro and I am really sad NATO destroyed our long brotherhood with Russia.
How the hell did Russia manage to mistake British ships as Japanese, in the Baltic?!
Drachinifel’s video on the Russian second Pacific squadron expands on this meme into over 30 minutes. Highly recommend. Once you watch it, the word Kamchatka will no longer be associated with Korean Air Lines flight 007, but now a ship that constantly hallucinates Japanese torpedo boats in the middle of the arctic circle.
ruclips.net/video/9Mdi_Fh9_Ag/видео.html
Read book of Novikov-Priboy about the battle of Tsushima, there are very good explanations how it did in real life. All second maritime squadron was on paranoia from the first day. Admiral was stupid and self-confident. Japanese were more traned, modern, quality. And don’t forgot that Russia is better on ground and out fleet never was the best thing at the seas like our army, for examples. Fleet is like poor parents. Always was: first army, second army, third army..... Oh, yeas, fleet, take a little money. All this squadron knew that they go to die. So it was very stupid war for us, respect to japanese. We don’t like to remember this.
Well too be fair the Japanese ships were designed by the British during the meiji restoration. So you cant necessarily blamed them
@@samuelademeso9041 Actually, most Meiji era IJN ships were designed by the French. It was only after WW1, that the Japanese started designing their own ships.
Good Question
Loving the description of the Baltic Fleet
Same I laughed so hard that I was yelled at.
Also I throwed a couple of binoculars at it.
Every one talking about bill wurtz and battlefield 1, and all I want is to know more about them exotic animals and that pesky snake.
Ikr? What's the story behind those! I'm really curious now!
Yeah, I was hoping the narrator would dive into that before continuing on!
+Doommagic
I believe its talking about when a ship went into the harbor at a madagascar port, and some of the sailors decided " hey let's buy some fucking Lemurs, chameleons, oxen and fukn parrots." they also bought other birds n vermin. Idk about the snake tho.
There was an article about that on the World of Warships forum back during the Alpha. I don't remember all of the details. But when he says they fired on themselves I mean they mistook each other for practice targets or something and fired several HUNDRED shells without scoring a hit. I read it a long time ago and I'm not sure.
I recommend watching Drachinifel's video on the 2nd Pacific Squadron's wacky trip to learn more about the snake. There was also a cursing parrot.
How about maybe YOU chill? 👉

oooooooh references
HEY IS THAT A BILL WURTZ REFRENCH?.
Japan was kind of scared of Russia.
Montanius Spiritum my railrode my problem
what about that bill wurtz reference with the russian railroad?
Philip Eng. also saw it hehe
Not entirely a reference. The reason Russia likes "warm water" is because other than Sevastopol and Rostov on Don, all of Russia's ports are inaccessible for about 1/3 of every year due to ice. No ports means harder to trade, harder to trade means harder to sustain economy, and harder to sustain economy means harder to quell the masses. This is the real reason Putin Wanted Crimea.
MAXZONE47 I saw the reference where russia sends the troops back, wait no they sent more troops in.
MAXZONE47 but the entire Black Sea is warm water
Travenzen. yeah but there is an issue with the black sea. it's on the OTHER SIDE of the planet.

"My Rord! A Grorious Victory will soon be Yours!"
The Battle of Tsushima... now THERES a tale. With Russia's first Pacific squadron destroyed, they renamed the Baltic fleet the "Second Pacific Squadron" and told them to set sail for the Far East, relieve Port Arthur and destroy the Japanese fleet. And so, the absurd and epic journey of the Second Pacific Squadron began. The journey took months, and was hell. Most of the sailors were untrained peasants shanghaied into the whole thing, and Admiral Zinoviy Rozhestvensky and his second in command Nikolai Nebogatov, the poor guys put in charge, knew full well that they were all being sent to die. And thousands did. The battle wasn't so much as a battle as a massacre. The Russian ships, some modern, but many decrepit and obsolete vessels (referred to by Rozhestvensky as the "sink-by-themselves ships") were sunk one by one. The Russian fleet was crushed, and what remained of it was surrendered to the Japanese by Nebogatov (Rozhestvensky had been badly wounded) who was unwilling to see more of his men die pointless deaths. And of course, when he and Rozhestvensky returned to Russia, they were blamed for absolutely everything. The Tsar nearly executed them, but instead they were imprisoned, their naval careers ended and their names were forever tarnished.
Rozhestvensky - Rozhdestvensky - Рождественский - Christmassy.
There's actually a really neat book about it.
www.amazon.com/Tsushima-Soviet-Literature-English-Transaction/dp/0883554089
John C Those poor men, 1917 revolution was really imminent if original leadership was so inept.
Dont forget that on the way they nearly started a war with Great Britain, someone who you didn't want to mess with back then, especially on the sea. The incident was caused by a russian intelligence officer based in denmark, who was a huge fan of spy novels. So he told the fleet that there were japanese torpedo boats in the north sea(!). The russian fleet sunk some english fishers because they thought they were japanese. Also after the stops in africa the ships degenerated to zoos, effectively not able to shoot some of the cannons because they had snakes around it. Its an absolutely incredible story.
Rozhestvensky, not Rozhdestvensky :))) So, no any XMas :))
oh well...
wow the production quality and attention to detail in these videos is always amazing, especially seeing all the nations with different period accurate rifles

Spanish-American war Of 1898?

Caused by a "Spanish" mine also called internal explosion in a foreing's country port
Pd: yeah its cool i also want a video about that!
Nah, the war is pretty boring, the only interesting thing is the jet fuel can't melt steel beams that started it all
Technically they also wanted the Philippines and wanted to free Cuba as well.
Actually the explosion of USS Maine wasn't what started the war and the "furnish the picture and I furnish the war" is false. It did however bring many volunteers. No, what started the war was a political stalemate between US, Spain and Cuba. Each wanted something different and no one wanted to budge.
Damn no Sabaton song to comment this time.
Fluffy Joe lots of bill wurtz history of Japan references though!
yep
This video and the video on the Meiji Restoration were amazing. I had been looking for something like this for a long time!
"Downgrade.. to a fuck ton, did I say downgrade? I meant upgrade" and " stop, no, you can't take that. We were gonna build an railroad through here to try to get some warm water."
That baltic sea navy trip tho, we need a indiana jones kind of movie with drunken russians telling their stories of what they live in they trip through the coasts of the world.

The reason why Russia lost the war was because there was an “immortal” Japanese soldier who went on a rampage and took down multiple Russian soldiers in a trench with his bare hands after being shot in the neck by a Russian machine gunner...

My great grandfather came to the US as a teenager because the Czar was sending troops out to the Jewish villages and rounding up all the boys 13 and up to be cannon fodder against the Japanese, so this has always been an event of minor fascination for me

My family has a pretty long written record of what each family member did both on my mother and my father's side but only notable military service they had other than one single member in WWII was Russo-Japanese war. My great great great grandfather and two older sons died at battle of hill 203. We still have a huge gravestone made from a single boulder cut in half near our home

I know that it is quite obscure, but I really appreciate the effort you put into showing the accurate national flags and rifles of nations at the time of the events you are talking about. Not many historical videos pull it off this well, the attention to detail is simply magnificent!

You should do a special episode on The Football War between El Salvador and Honduras.
Yes. I want to see more detail about this, as I've only ever seen mention of it in one video about the "10 Dumbest Wars in History". I've seen various videos about the ridiculous Emu War, but this one needs more attention as well.
Doommagic Same with The War of The Stray Dog and that one time Nicaragua invaded Costa Rica because of a border error on Google Maps.
ginrollins211 I'd personally love to see more detail about the War of the Bucket between Bologna and Modena myself. Seriously, to this day, Bologna still wants that bucket back and Modena have it on display to mock Bologna's loss. XD
Can you make The Great Northern War video please?!

good job on the art, I really like it
Russia: ITS MINE
Japan: SHUT UP MANCHURIA IS MINE
Qing: stop fighting it's still my land you know
People like to call it the first war in recent history where an Asian country defeated a European country, even though out of all European countries, Russia was the most Asian, and out of all the Asian countries, Japan was the most European. (If that makes any sense)
Russia was in a sense, a "European power", Don't forget, its main armies were in Europe.
Japan was lucky because of the lack of Russian intelligence in Japan, if the Russians knew the war was actually financially unsustainable for Japan and Japan would have been force to sue for peace by 1906 or 1907, then I'm sure Russia would have stayed the course.
nodinitiative Nah, the Russian empire was already weakened, that's why their troops were weak and undersupplied. Japan in the other hand, was raising up to be one of the most powerful countries in the world at that time. It's no coincidence that Hitler befriend to the Japanese before WW2.
that doesn't make sense, asian army have defeated europeans countless times in History
thesuperproify Key word being "recent"
Not after industrialization.
Thanks for the video, this will help me greatly for my History Test
i like that you got all the different service rifles for all the different nation, most history channels do put inn the effort this.
Look at Japan as the Great Britain of Asia. An island nation protected by ocean borders, with a homogenous people and culture, forced to become super efficient due to a lack of natural resources. Add to that a culture that effectively uses shame and notions of honor as a behavioral deterrent and there you have it...a successful country (historically speaking)
Great Britain as homogeneous? Hahaha..... Not really. Tell that to the Scottish.
Theo Buniel there's another similarity, actually...great Britain has their culturally different people to the north, the scottish, and Japan had theirs, the Ainu people of Hokkaido. Except with the latter case, most of them got wiped out by imperialism...
Altar of Freedom yeah but the comparison was that both culturally important island-based empires had untamed wildernesses to the north with people who they fought to dominate many a time. The Japanese analog to the extermination of indigenous peoples by the British and others would probably be what they did to the Chinese and pacific islanders during the early part of WWII
Altar of Freedom yeah I know obviously nothing in history works as a perfect analog to anything else. I'm just trying to draw comparisons as much as I can. To bring up interesting points.
Tobias The World-Weary o
When the 8-nation popped out together with the rifles, that's the most accurate and period correct rifles for each of the military that I have ever seen in such animated history video. Great job ya 16 year old kid.
Again, a great video, bravo!!
These videos make my day as a history major :)))) u rock
I love your Battlefield 1 music.
It seems that Japan is somehow very fond of the idea of sneak-attacking enemy ports first before officially declaring war later...
Victory?
+Hess512 Well, a very costly victory with all its gains lost 4 decades later!
I don't even understand what's the point of declaring war. Without it, the enemy won't be prepared and can give you easy victory. Japan and later, Hitler, knew all this.
Every country does that
Pearl Harbor was actually inspired directly by the British attack on the Italian port of Taranto in mid-1940. Before that, the Japanese did not have any confidence that a sudden air strike on a sitting fleet with carrier based planes could ever work. This was before they entered the war, which meant they had diplomats overseas who relayed everything back home in a lot of detail.
I really liked the video, I’m don’t understand English well, but with your video I felt that I understood all, thanks for doing videos of that quality.
you should do the pacific war, sino-vietnamise war, Russian civil war & winter/continuation war as a 2 part.
love your videos!
Fun fact: Japan would have lost the war, if Russia had not commit to battle so soon or just made the war last for another year or two.
The war kind of bankrupted Japan and that is why the Japanese government at that time were not happy they were not able to get a huge financial compensation for the war. lol.
Fun fact 2: Teddy Roosevelt actually wanted America to side with Japan simply because he was shocked and excited by the unexpected victories Japan was gaining over Russia until he thought the possibility that Japan may actually completely kick out Russia from East Asia.
Fun Fact 3,5: At the time after assasinaion attempt Japan was used to pay hugely for attacking foregniers and they were prepared even to give Russia some of their land as a sort of reconciliation. Emperor of Japan personally went to Russian's ship to give out his personal apology even though it was quite dangerous action for him to do.
And yeah, that lifelong prisonment didn't lasted long, Asassin didn't live for a year after the court.
By the way Nicolas 2 enjoyed some (japaneese hookers and) cool tatoo that japaneese master did on his arm before that and there are even photoes of him posing with it open to be seen.
Fun fact 5:
The Tsar actually agreed to the Japanese ultimatum long before action started, being fully aware of the inadequate supply routes and much weaker navy in the region.
However being an incompetent buffoon, couldn't manage to send the papers on time, the signed treaty arrived in Japan like 2 weeks after the start of action.
Fun Fact 6: Russia could've won the Battle of Mukden (and thus the war), but the Russian commander had his plan based off faulty intelligence; the Japanese received reinforcements from Port Arthur because Russia couldn't make up its mind and actually launch a decisive attack; and the Russian officers were overall generally incompetent to say the least, not to mention the top commander basically handicapped himself because he didn't like one of his immediate subordinates, and set him aside.
nodinitiative
Japanese thought Teddy cheated them, but he actually wanted the Japanese to win, and he ensured that the treaty was as favourable to Japan as it could be. He didn't like the Russians. He wrote some horrible things about them.
I love how at 4:05 you turned Scottish for a second...

Thanks for the this one. One other thing about this war: it reinforced the narrative from Mahon's Influence of Seapower on History that became so influential in the early part of the century. All the Great Powers said LOOK- a decisive battle ships battle. To be a 1st rate power, we must build battleships! This was, in part, a force behind the pre-WWI naval arms race.
