    • @the_Kutonarch
      @the_Kutonarch 7 лет назад +301

      RogueSkull Japan and Britain were allies, Japan was even buying navy ships from Britain.
      I guess the Russians thought that the Japanese would have sailors in Britain so that they could sail the ships back to Japan.
      But instead of sailing back, they thought they might attack their fleet instead.

      Actually, there was a report according to which some Japanese mine ships moved from Japan to the Britan's shores. That's why Russians were on the alert. Then they noticed ships that didn't have lights at night so they confused it. Also, there were the misunderstanding between the admiral and other officers so ships started the attack without command.

      Drachinifel’s video on the Russian second Pacific squadron expands on this meme into over 30 minutes. Highly recommend. Once you watch it, the word Kamchatka will no longer be associated with Korean Air Lines flight 007, but now a ship that constantly hallucinates Japanese torpedo boats in the middle of the arctic circle.

      Read book of Novikov-Priboy about the battle of Tsushima, there are very good explanations how it did in real life. All second maritime squadron was on paranoia from the first day. Admiral was stupid and self-confident. Japanese were more traned, modern, quality. And don’t forgot that Russia is better on ground and out fleet never was the best thing at the seas like our army, for examples. Fleet is like poor parents. Always was: first army, second army, third army..... Oh, yeas, fleet, take a little money. All this squadron knew that they go to die. So it was very stupid war for us, respect to japanese. We don’t like to remember this.

      Not entirely a reference. The reason Russia likes "warm water" is because other than Sevastopol and Rostov on Don, all of Russia's ports are inaccessible for about 1/3 of every year due to ice. No ports means harder to trade, harder to trade means harder to sustain economy, and harder to sustain economy means harder to quell the masses. This is the real reason Putin Wanted Crimea.

    The Battle of Tsushima... now THERES a tale. With Russia's first Pacific squadron destroyed, they renamed the Baltic fleet the "Second Pacific Squadron" and told them to set sail for the Far East, relieve Port Arthur and destroy the Japanese fleet. And so, the absurd and epic journey of the Second Pacific Squadron began. The journey took months, and was hell. Most of the sailors were untrained peasants shanghaied into the whole thing, and Admiral Zinoviy Rozhestvensky and his second in command Nikolai Nebogatov, the poor guys put in charge, knew full well that they were all being sent to die. And thousands did. The battle wasn't so much as a battle as a massacre. The Russian ships, some modern, but many decrepit and obsolete vessels (referred to by Rozhestvensky as the "sink-by-themselves ships") were sunk one by one. The Russian fleet was crushed, and what remained of it was surrendered to the Japanese by Nebogatov (Rozhestvensky had been badly wounded) who was unwilling to see more of his men die pointless deaths. And of course, when he and Rozhestvensky returned to Russia, they were blamed for absolutely everything. The Tsar nearly executed them, but instead they were imprisoned, their naval careers ended and their names were forever tarnished.

      Dont forget that on the way they nearly started a war with Great Britain, someone who you didn't want to mess with back then, especially on the sea. The incident was caused by a russian intelligence officer based in denmark, who was a huge fan of spy novels. So he told the fleet that there were japanese torpedo boats in the north sea(!). The russian fleet sunk some english fishers because they thought they were japanese. Also after the stops in africa the ships degenerated to zoos, effectively not able to shoot some of the cannons because they had snakes around it. Its an absolutely incredible story.

    People like to call it the first war in recent history where an Asian country defeated a European country, even though out of all European countries, Russia was the most Asian, and out of all the Asian countries, Japan was the most European. (If that makes any sense)

    • @nodinitiative
      @nodinitiative 7 лет назад +93

      Russia was in a sense, a "European power", Don't forget, its main armies were in Europe.
      Japan was lucky because of the lack of Russian intelligence in Japan, if the Russians knew the war was actually financially unsustainable for Japan and Japan would have been force to sue for peace by 1906 or 1907, then I'm sure Russia would have stayed the course.

    • @huynhtranhung
      @huynhtranhung 7 лет назад +72

      nodinitiative Nah, the Russian empire was already weakened, that's why their troops were weak and undersupplied. Japan in the other hand, was raising up to be one of the most powerful countries in the world at that time. It's no coincidence that Hitler befriend to the Japanese before WW2.

    Look at Japan as the Great Britain of Asia. An island nation protected by ocean borders, with a homogenous people and culture, forced to become super efficient due to a lack of natural resources. Add to that a culture that effectively uses shame and notions of honor as a behavioral deterrent and there you have it...a successful country (historically speaking)

    • @theobuniel9643
      @theobuniel9643 6 лет назад +14

      Great Britain as homogeneous? Hahaha..... Not really. Tell that to the Scottish.

    • @demilembias2527
      @demilembias2527 6 лет назад +8

      Theo Buniel there's another similarity, actually...great Britain has their culturally different people to the north, the scottish, and Japan had theirs, the Ainu people of Hokkaido. Except with the latter case, most of them got wiped out by imperialism...

    • @demilembias2527
      @demilembias2527 6 лет назад +1

      Altar of Freedom yeah but the comparison was that both culturally important island-based empires had untamed wildernesses to the north with people who they fought to dominate many a time. The Japanese analog to the extermination of indigenous peoples by the British and others would probably be what they did to the Chinese and pacific islanders during the early part of WWII

    • @demilembias2527
      @demilembias2527 6 лет назад

      Altar of Freedom yeah I know obviously nothing in history works as a perfect analog to anything else. I'm just trying to draw comparisons as much as I can. To bring up interesting points.

      Pearl Harbor was actually inspired directly by the British attack on the Italian port of Taranto in mid-1940. Before that, the Japanese did not have any confidence that a sudden air strike on a sitting fleet with carrier based planes could ever work. This was before they entered the war, which meant they had diplomats overseas who relayed everything back home in a lot of detail.

    Fun fact: Japan would have lost the war, if Russia had not commit to battle so soon or just made the war last for another year or two.
    The war kind of bankrupted Japan and that is why the Japanese government at that time were not happy they were not able to get a huge financial compensation for the war. lol.

    • @TheNorth15
      @TheNorth15 7 лет назад +115

      Fun fact 2: Teddy Roosevelt actually wanted America to side with Japan simply because he was shocked and excited by the unexpected victories Japan was gaining over Russia until he thought the possibility that Japan may actually completely kick out Russia from East Asia.

    • @dimas3829
      @dimas3829 7 лет назад +36

      Fun Fact 3,5: At the time after assasinaion attempt Japan was used to pay hugely for attacking foregniers and they were prepared even to give Russia some of their land as a sort of reconciliation. Emperor of Japan personally went to Russian's ship to give out his personal apology even though it was quite dangerous action for him to do.
      And yeah, that lifelong prisonment didn't lasted long, Asassin didn't live for a year after the court.
      By the way Nicolas 2 enjoyed some (japaneese hookers and) cool tatoo that japaneese master did on his arm before that and there are even photoes of him posing with it open to be seen.

    • @phileas007
      @phileas007 7 лет назад +43

      Fun fact 5:
      The Tsar actually agreed to the Japanese ultimatum long before action started, being fully aware of the inadequate supply routes and much weaker navy in the region.
      However being an incompetent buffoon, couldn't manage to send the papers on time, the signed treaty arrived in Japan like 2 weeks after the start of action.

    • @CommanderJonny
      @CommanderJonny 7 лет назад +23

      Fun Fact 6: Russia could've won the Battle of Mukden (and thus the war), but the Russian commander had his plan based off faulty intelligence; the Japanese received reinforcements from Port Arthur because Russia couldn't make up its mind and actually launch a decisive attack; and the Russian officers were overall generally incompetent to say the least, not to mention the top commander basically handicapped himself because he didn't like one of his immediate subordinates, and set him aside.
