THANK YOU. This removed the stiffness in my Wave+ and Gordon wave clone. 150 opening and closings with a twisting motion removed all the stiffness. Afterwords I sprayed WD-40 repeatedly for a couple of minutes to remove the .5 grit diamond paste from the pliers joint. Before this method I tried hammering the pivot and grabbing a branch and rocking the pliers back and forth which helped only a little. Now all is good in my multi-tool collection! You are the man with the solution. Thanks again. Blessings to you and your family!
I bought this paste on Amazon : www.amazon.fr/abrasive-diamant-polissage-W0-5-W40-320-10000/dp/B07TRDZRD3/ref=sr_1_13?__mk_fr_FR=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&dchild=1&keywords=p%C3%A2te+%C3%A0+roder&qid=1614611909&sr=8-13
I followed your advice in this video to loosen up the pliers on my beautiful Victorinox Spirit multi-tool. It was so stiff that the pliers were essentially useless - the handles would rotate before the pliers joint would. I basically stopped using it and just used my Wave+ instead. Finally, I purchased some 50K grit diamond paste, mixed it with WD40 and after an hour of working the pliers the joint finally freed up and now operates smoothly. The Wave+, which I have in the black finish, is a great tool - I really like the two knife blades on it. However, the Spirit's knife is very good too (mine has the combination serated and smooth edges), but in the looks department the Spirit cannot be beat!
I do not know. I chose this diamond abrasive paste because of the fineness of the grain. I guess any abrasive paste should work well, only the number of open/close to remove stiffness should change.
Obviously you didn't read my question properly or you don't understand English very well just like most Quebecers can't understand English. I asked "WHAT IS IN THOSE 2 TUBES and not WHERE DID YOU BUY THEM"
Hi, thanks for sharing this method. Will this method make the pliers remain loose even after clamping down hard? I have a surge that will loosen up after some time of opening and closing but as soon as i clamp down hard with them they get extreamly stiff again.
I dripped some 1.5 micron sharpening paste/liquid into my leatherman pivots, then open & closed the pliers for about 45 min. Worked like a charm, they freely fall open and closed now. Did this on a P4, P2, and a skeletool.
The problem that I had was I tried to cut off a very hard screw that was protruding and the cutters inside the pliers were slightly bent. I took a dremel and ground off a very small amount of metal and they worked great.
First of all, thank you for all the videos you post. I really enjoy your different "style" of videos. I tried this today with a Skeletool CX. It helped a bit but I still ended up giving the pivot a few wacks and now it's much better than it was originally. Worked well on my Rebar as well. Question for you diezelle57....if you were allowed to keep only ONE multitool, which one would it be??
Thanks for the video, but I wouldn't be comfortable getting diamond dust between the pliers without guaranteeing that I can clean it all out thoroughly; any retained dust will accelerate wear on the pliers. My Wave+ is quite stiff, I'll try a variation of this method mixing WD-40 with graphite dust as it is a solid lubricant
Hi, I did it on my Surge with 1micro diamond paste instead of 0.5 and it worked just perfectly. The key is to move your pliers quickly and a numerous times. Thanks so much for the tip. Hammering the axle damages your Leatherman for nothing.
I have a question for you - as someone with a whole host of Leatherman tools, have you noticed a decline in quality on the whole (particularly in the past 5/6 years, especially since the logo change)
@@diezelle57 the reason I ask, over the past 2 weeks I have had 3 Leatherman wave+'s, the first had a warp in the frame where the lockbar cutout is, causing galling with the plier head (gouges rather than scuffs or rubbing) and the last 2 have had the normal stiff pliers, but also the pivot tightening alot after squeezing the handles - I had the issue on the free series but thought it was limited to that (I ended up on my 3rd warranty with the free, and had to ask the warranty department to physically go and check the replacement tool before the sent it, back when they where new out) With all that I'm feeling a little bit disappointed - to my mind every previous Leatherman was brilliant, and after a little break-in period they where smooth as butter and could be depended on. The annoying thing is that I can get a £10 Stanley made in china multitool with none of these issues 99% of the time.
@@Philter-Coffee The problem of the stiffness of the pliers, in particular after tightening, is effective. This is the reason why I proposed this break-in solution. I do not know why Leatherman modified the assembly of its pliers, with adjustments too tight, I read that the goal was to guarantee a lack of play in the long term ... For the other faults that one can to notice on the products, it is about a problem of quality control, problem which is not new ... but Leatherman's warranty is excellent. Leatherman cannot be compared to tool companies (Stanley, etc.) which have mediocre multi-tools manufactured in China (low-end steel / no locking / ...).
@@diezelle57 how about compared to companies like victorinox, Gerber, nextool, Sog, Schrade just to name a few? To my eye Leatherman have dipped bellow them in quality. The warranty is their saving grace at the moment, but victorinox have a lifetime warranty, Gerber has a 25 year warranty, and sog a lifetime. All have material specs, and none have pliers which lock up when used. Leatherman pliers use to be the best in the business, but have dropped below lesser brands because of bad changes and their quality control to my mind.
I have successfully tested this method on all my new models, my Charges+, a Skeletool, a Signal. This break-in involves opening and closing the pliers quickly and repeatedly, approximately 211 times.
No, I am not afraid of damaging my Leatherman pliers thus remaining deaf to urban legends.
In situations like this, I just drip some 5w40 lube and no problem !
@@PeterAgostiniJdcap26 I have made several videos on this subject but have not received any clarification. I guess Leatherman wanted to ensure there is no play throughout the life of the tool. But frankly the old models had no problem and the Swisstools pliers do not suffer from any stiffness ...

Merci ! :)
Thanks for the video. I have this one the way. It should work also right?
Diamond Polishing Compound Polishing Paste 200,000 Grit 0-0.1 Microns
Thanks
Oui ...
I wonder if this will also fix the scissors on the SOG powerpint.
Will using wd40 alone yield similar results?
I don't think so.
where to buy paste. Send me a link. Thank you.
Diezelle, Not sure if can gat "Kroil oil with silicone" outside of the USA it also works will with tie joints.
???
@@diezelle57 Kroil is a brand of penetrating oil.
Finally a solution for my stiff Leatherman! Going to try this today. Thanks!
Will W0.5 ~40 Diamond Grinding Polishing Paste Lapping Compound For M 7(W5=2000#) work?
I do not know. I chose this diamond abrasive paste because of the fineness of the grain. I guess any abrasive paste should work well, only the number of open/close to remove stiffness should change.
@@diezelle57 ok thanks for this i got 3 LM pliers with this issue. I Will try it out thanks for your awesome videos🛠
Nor everyone is Chinese. What are the 2 tubes inside that ziploc bag with the Chinese text?
Amazon ...
Obviously you didn't read my question properly or you don't understand English very well just like most Quebecers can't understand English.
I asked "WHAT IS IN THOSE 2 TUBES and not WHERE DID YOU BUY THEM"
@@ECVPhotography Amazon ... diamond paste ... Je ne suis pas canadien mais français.
@@ECVPhotographywow you’re an asshole. Did you understand THAT?
Hi, thanks for sharing this method. Will this method make the pliers remain loose even after clamping down hard? I have a surge that will loosen up after some time of opening and closing but as soon as i clamp down hard with them they get extreamly stiff again.
This method makes it possible to remove the stiffness of the pliers even after a significant tightening.
Thank you,
always quality and useful videos.
Cheers man!
How do you clean the abrasive paste after you're done? (to make sure that it doesn't chew more than you want)
WD-40 under pressure.
Great idea. Maybe open and close in front of a hairdryer to warm the grease as well
For those kind of issues i do prefer using vaseline oil, cause it has excellent penetration capabilities.
Bon savoir
Thanks for the video, but I wouldn't be comfortable getting diamond dust between the pliers without guaranteeing that I can clean it all out thoroughly; any retained dust will accelerate wear on the pliers. My Wave+ is quite stiff, I'll try a variation of this method mixing WD-40 with graphite dust as it is a solid lubricant
Good remark but the abrasion is low and I don't think it can damage the pliers.
Hi,
I did it on my Surge with 1micro diamond paste instead of 0.5 and it worked just perfectly.
No, just the stiffness of the pliers.
@@diezelle57 the reason I ask, over the past 2 weeks I have had 3 Leatherman wave+'s, the first had a warp in the frame where the lockbar cutout is, causing galling with the plier head (gouges rather than scuffs or rubbing) and the last 2 have had the normal stiff pliers, but also the pivot tightening alot after squeezing the handles - I had the issue on the free series but thought it was limited to that (I ended up on my 3rd warranty with the free, and had to ask the warranty department to physically go and check the replacement tool before the sent it, back when they where new out)
With all that I'm feeling a little bit disappointed - to my mind every previous Leatherman was brilliant, and after a little break-in period they where smooth as butter and could be depended on.
@@Philter-Coffee I have not yet received an employment contract from Leatherman :)
Nice!

Try Wasabi next time👍
Max Vigna:
Wasabi mixed with soy sauce? Good for tofu and multitools!
C'est un bon moyen ~!
Reel oil or a high quality gun oil. Then space heater. Thats how I treat all my firearms
Now you have to do the rest of them 😆
???
@@diezelle57 you have many multi tools to , so you must have more of them to do .
@@PeterAgostiniJdcap26 The stiffness of the pliers appeared quite recently at Leatherman ... I have treated all my recently acquired models :)
@@diezelle57 that’s interesting.. I wonder why they would make them so tight in tolerance s . Maybe to prove a point of quality.
@@PeterAgostiniJdcap26 I have made several videos on this subject but have not received any clarification. I guess Leatherman wanted to ensure there is no play throughout the life of the tool. But frankly the old models had no problem and the Swisstools pliers do not suffer from any stiffness ...
☺👍
