This song truly captures the essence of WW1. Many boys had joined, most faking their ages or foraging signatures, seeking glory and fame, only to be cut down before they were even to be considered adults. They never knew what to expect, they thought they would come home a hero and have glorious stories to tell to their friends and family, but what they came home with was only the horrors that they had seen. As for their friends, brothers, and fathers that never came home, their names would be forgotten to history. Never to be known or remembered
It was the same with the boys in WW2, who faked their age so they can go over seas and fight against the Germans, one of those boys was Audie Murphy, the most decorated officer of that war.

Not going to lie: That final verse still gets me every single replay. Also, watching the official music video, seeing Motorhead carry Lemmy's photo through the streets was a potent allergen. If you read this Sabaton, biggest thumbs up from your old buddy in Vancouver, WA, USA.
As we said in France : "Cemetaries are full of heroes" and " a heroe lives as long as we remember him". And a last one : " a good soldier didn't fight because he hate what's front of him but because he loves what's behind him"
My great-great grandad died in the battle of the Somme, Both Motörhead’s and Sabaton’s version bring tears to my eyes, Rip to those hero’s who never returned may they names life 1000 years.
I've been wanting Sabaton to cover this song ever since I heard it a few years ago. Can't believe you guys actually covered it, never in my life have I been so happy!
When this song came out, my younger brother was 16 years old, and all I could see was him and his best friend bleeding in the mud and it was one of the first times a song has ever made me cry like a baby.
The third act when they scream for their mothers really captures the human element of these grand operations. The best parts of each Sabaton song will always be when they sing of the humanity within the horror.
I witness Sabaton preform this song in Vienna this year. Among all of their amazing songs, when they started playing this one, the feeling that felt on the arena is indescribable. Entire arena waving lights and singing to remember all those who gave their lives for us. Even if you don't have anybody who served, this song makes you thank all those who did.
Like I wrote for valley of death, my great grandfather was a Bulgarian soldier and he told me to tell my children of his deeds that he did so he would not fade into the unknown. May everyone who listen to this song tell their children of heroes of the past, present and future.
that is the shame of war young kids like that 18 years old and younger. Ran off to war thinking that it would be an adventure, millions never came home, many more came home wounded physically and mentally. Whole towns lost a generation. We should never forget war. That is worst thing about it.
Thank you sabaton for telling the stories of the hero's who came before us I had my honor in serving Canada and let me tell ya alot of us listen to you guys
My grandfather was 'drafted' into World War II. In that he was arrested for shoplifting with his cousin. The judge gave them two choices, the Army or jail. They chose the former. Grandpa was sent to Guam at some point in 1945. He and his buddies captured two Japanese holdouts. Then he was part of the occupation forces of Japan. That's where he met grandma, a Japanese nurse.
"Ten thousands slain, now theres nobody, remembers our names" there is.... more than those lost men can imagine. If not their names but their actions, if not their actions then the legacies they left for merely being there to fight
I heard my friend cry, and he sank to his knees Coughing blood as he screamed for his mother. That hit hard because a soldier's last moments of life is something of comfort, and he's thinking of his mother.
I didn’t even make the connection that it could’ve been a Motörhead cover and I started to tear up as soon as I recognized the lyrics. Beautiful song and tribute ❤️🤘
We do remember. Frederick George Fanner lies in Dickebusch after he volunteered in 1914, survived the Somme with his Pals batallion and fell near Ypres in July 1917. One of the Pompey Pals.. Gentlemen, one of your very best videos. Thank you.
Such a sad and melancholy vibe throughout the words with an amazing track behind it. As great as any other song performed by Sabaton, these just keep getting better! And as usual Joakim's voice is just perfect ❤
I am a soldier currently at the time of writing. This song put me to tears. Sabaton always seems to understand cherrishing the feats of past yet understanding the hell that is war. I have not seen combat, I have not deployed anywhere currently aside from a few missions; we dont consider them the same. But the thoughts still arise, and many days I ponder it. I often ask myself when would my time of unfortunate sacrifice come, or if it ever would at all. If and when it does, I just hope it'd of been worth my efforts. It's a deep concern for us in service, it eats away at some when headlines get rough. None of us truly wish for war, but we'd do what we have to when the time comes. We just hope it never has to be. "The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.” Thank you, Sabaton.
"And now there's nobody remembers our names" not 100% sure on the implications, but the lyrics seem to hint that each child died from the family, leading to no one carrying or remembering the name once the bloodlines were cut short.
It's so damn good. It's so goddamned good. Lemmy's hoisting one to you wherever he is. Truthfully? I wasn't ready. This song has always torn my heart out. And this time was no exception. Well done. A fitting tribute to them all. 🖤
I was a little boy growing up in Nebraska. My great grandparents were still alive. Grandpa's father served in WW1. His stripes, metals gunny sack, helmet were displayed above my grandparents house fireplace mantel. Grandpa served in the Navy WW2 as one of the boat captains sending Rangers ashore for D-day. He got shot in the back. Bullet left in him because if they took it out at that time would have paralyzed him. This song means alot to me.
I've listened to this song 3 times and each time it's ended with me in tears. Once at home, once while driving and this in the middle of work. Absolutely beautiful
Amazing song. As a Canadian who’s part Swedish, I love this band, they give me a lot of pride, I’ve always loved Sabaton ever since my brother introduced me to them. Rock on 🤘
"though it wasn't my fault, and i wasnt to blame" is the line that really hits. lots of people call out to their mother before death. it makes sense. when we're kids, mom was warm and protective and sorts things out. it's a psychological thing. but as adults, which one of us voted to go to war? which one of us decided to invade, or attack, or defend? none of us. politicians did it, not soldiers.
It’s heart wrenching hearing this song, but does the reality justice. The war is romanticized, and the leaders call, and you’ll be a hero in your great uniform on this grand field of battle, and you feel invigorated and ready and able and want to do your part! You’ll be a hero when you get back! Then it’s months later, and you’re shuffling down a trench half-blind and coughing blood, crying, trying to hold your guts in, while you’re crying for your mother and wishing you could go home
Did anyone else get super emotional or is it just me who started to cry uncontrollably? 5th time i listened to this song just this morning and the chills are there everytime, im at a lost for words, the verse about the soldiers dying screaming for their mothers got me... what a great song lads... keep up the great work cannot wait for the sabaton history episode for this
I still remember all of the boys and girls under my command, i may not have been the best combat officer according to the standards of uncle sam, but i wasnt there to impress him, i was there to make sure my platoon was taken care of, not hob knob with the rest of the brass. so hearing "And we brawled and we fought, and we whored till we stood, 10,000 shoulder to shoulder." just makes me smile through the tears, because i miss every one of em, through hell and high water they were the closest thing i'll ever have to kids and i'll always remember the good times we had together.
I can't find the right words. This is definettely masterpiece. I'm listening again and again. Nearly crying. Perfect tribute to all fallen in useless wars. Thank you guys! A big salute to you all!
Least we forget the fallen. May the sacrifice they made never be far from our minds and heart. Honor and peace to the fallen and forever shall your names be remember. As always Sabaton you made a song that stands above the rest by miles. Never stop telling the forgottens stories!

And it reminds me why I do Wreaths Across America, so the names of men like this are never truly lost. Thank you, Sabaton, for this amazing song, and for remembering those who are forgotten by the many.

Absolutely love this song makes me think about how many young men didn’t come home no matter where they were from “at ease soldiers your duty is done thank you all for your sacrifice if it wasn’t for you none of us would be free right now”
I've never felt as grateful for the brave souls that gave their lives for their country. I have never felt any more emotional from a song than this. I salute you for your work to keep their stories told.👍❤️
THIS is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. The original song was already emotional, this version hits even harder. You got us all metalheads in tears, what a touching way to end the “Echoes of The Great War” trilogy, that’s why you are our favorite band 🙌🏻
And a last one :
" a good soldier didn't fight because he hate what's front of him but because he loves what's behind him"
For over 100 years medics have told us when men where shoot down many never called for help or a medic but for the caring embrace of their mother
They are the one's who will care for you always
"And I called for my mother and she never came,
Though it wasn't my fault and I wasn't to blame"
That brings me to tears.
My great-great grandad died in the battle of the Somme,
Both Motörhead’s and Sabaton’s version bring tears to my eyes,
Rip to those hero’s who never returned may they names life 1000 years.
I'm not crying, you're crying.
No! You are!
No we all are.
It's a terrible day for rain
I've been wanting Sabaton to cover this song ever since I heard it a few years ago. Can't believe you guys actually covered it, never in my life have I been so happy!
When someone says "Men should not cry" let them hear this song.
Men cry, cowards don't
Fr girls say we men have it easier, but if we cry we’re cats? Yet when a girl cries she gets a 6 star therapy session?
fr man
Women, and self proclaimed Alphas say that.
Cowards cry way more. Bro really thought he said something.
"So, do you want to make a tribute to Motorhead, to the British at the Somme, or a broad tribute to soldiers throughout history?"
"Yes"
"All of the above"
I witness Sabaton preform this song in Vienna this year. Among all of their amazing songs, when they started playing this one, the feeling that felt on the arena is indescribable. Entire arena waving lights and singing to remember all those who gave their lives for us. Even if you don't have anybody who served, this song makes you thank all those who did.
Like I wrote for valley of death, my great grandfather was a Bulgarian soldier and he told me to tell my children of his deeds that he did so he would not fade into the unknown. May everyone who listen to this song tell their children of heroes of the past, present and future.
I’d love to hear the stories
that is the shame of war young kids like that 18 years old and younger. Ran off to war thinking that it would be an adventure, millions never came home, many more came home wounded physically and mentally. Whole towns lost a generation. We should never forget war. That is worst thing about it.
in the words of Robert E. Lee, the Confederate general, "It is good that War is so terrible, for if it wasn't, we would grow too fond of it"
This song brought a tear to my eyes 😢
Same. Two, to be honest.
i somehow cant cry to this
same with the crying part
Now there's a pain in my chest these men should never be forgotten
We feel the same way.
Thank you sabaton for telling the stories of the hero's who came before us I had my honor in serving Canada and let me tell ya alot of us listen to you guys
I am a soldier, and this song made me nearly cry. Thanks, Sabaton
As a lover of history and rock music, this band just hits me right. This song gets me emotional every time.
It's midnight for me, but I'm here for Sabaton
Same here my guy
Same here by dude
Yep. I always stay up for Sabaton
Me too, I just didn't see your comment.
I heard my friend cry, and he sank to his knees
Coughing blood as he screamed for his mother.
That hit hard because a soldier's last moments of life is something of comfort, and he's thinking of his mother.
I think he was screaming for his mum because that's what kids do when they are terrified, in shock and losing lots of blood. He was just 16...
I didn’t even make the connection that it could’ve been a Motörhead cover and I started to tear up as soon as I recognized the lyrics. Beautiful song and tribute ❤️🤘
Also a brilliant idea of putting photos of Motorhead members here and there.
"The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.”
Thank you, Sabaton.

If you can, reply to this comment every now and then. Even if it's just to tell me to get fucked xD
A good banter helps, I'm told ^^

i love that at 1:55 yall actually put a picture of the Metal God Lemmy
Cheers to yall for keeping his memory alive with your music
RIP Lemmy! 🤘
Absolutely gorgeous cover, hope you can do more covers like Saint Patrick's Battalion!
I've listened to this song 3 times and each time it's ended with me in tears. Once at home, once while driving and this in the middle of work. Absolutely beautiful
The only time I'll ever stay up for an hour waiting for a RUclips video is for a Sabaton song. You guys are just amazing.
A very sad song but very true and beautiful one we will never forget those soldiers thank you sabaton
Thank you! Lest we forget!
Amazing song. As a Canadian who’s part Swedish, I love this band, they give me a lot of pride, I’ve always loved Sabaton ever since my brother introduced me to them. Rock on 🤘
cool - Canada and Sweden - two countries who did d*ck in world wars.
Now this is epic
We'll never forget them.
A beautiful song and tribute to the fallen heroes! Keep up the great work!
I agree
It’s heart wrenching hearing this song, but does the reality justice. The war is romanticized, and the leaders call, and you’ll be a hero in your great uniform on this grand field of battle, and you feel invigorated and ready and able and want to do your part! You’ll be a hero when you get back!
Then it’s months later, and you’re shuffling down a trench half-blind and coughing blood, crying, trying to hold your guts in, while you’re crying for your mother and wishing you could go home
Did anyone else get super emotional or is it just me who started to cry uncontrollably? This is why I love sabaton their my favorite band heard my friend cry, and he sank to his knees,
Coughing blood as he screamed for his mother,
And I fell by his side, and that's how we died,
Clinging like kids to each other"
you have no idea how much I wanted to cry hearing that.
Thank you for this masterpiece Sabaton
Thank you for your kinda words. Means the world to us! 🤘
The only songs that still make me cry are Sabaton's.
No other band can claim that honour.
5th time i listened to this song just this morning and the chills are there everytime, im at a lost for words, the verse about the soldiers dying screaming for their mothers got me...
what a great song lads... keep up the great work
cannot wait for the sabaton history episode for this
For the first time I am at a loss for words. This song is beyond phenomenal. I am so glad I came across you guys.
It's a wonderful cover of a Motörhead song.
"I can fight only for something that I love, love only what I respect, and respect only what I at least know.
When diplomacy ends, War begins."
Sabaton don't miss. They hit hard in every song, even covers. Mad respect.
The Motörhead original is also well worth a listen
Least we forget the fallen. May the sacrifice they made never be far from our minds and heart. Honor and peace to the fallen and forever shall your names be remember.
As always Sabaton you made a song that stands above the rest by miles. Never stop telling the forgottens stories!
This is one of your best songs yet. It’s so emotional and I didn’t expect to be crying at 7 in the morning
It's a wonderful cover of what has to be Motörheads most powerful and emotional song.
Alright, I think I've stopped crying enough to string together a sentence.
Holy CRAP this song hits me in the feels. And it reminds me why I do Wreaths Across America, so the names of men like this are never truly lost.
Thank you, Sabaton, for this amazing song, and for remembering those who are forgotten by the many.
And yet again Sabaton releases a tribute to make me ball like a baby at work this song is simply beautiful a true testament to the power of your music great job guys
Thanks a lot for commenting Daniel! 🤟
Absolutely brilliant song . Only just discovered Sabaton and they are superb . History and heavy metal and a great voice . What more could you want !
Welcome on board Steven! 😎
Now excuse me, as I will cry for 1916 minutes.
Thank you Sabaton for such a masterpiece!
Don't forget to thank Lemmy as well as he wrote it. Check out the original version from Motörhead
Truly a beautiful song. May the soldiers who fought and are still fighting always be remembered.
This song brought a tear to my eye and left me speechless. incredible
I love how sabaton can make you feel saf for somone you dont know anything about
This song really makes me feel emotions I didn't know existed.
I had an important meeting and watched this just before. What a mistake, I was in tears for my meeting, great...
Great song BTW
THIS is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war.
-Erich Maria Remarque WW1 soldier, & author of probably the greatest book ever sold.
All Quiet On the Western Front.
😭
My cousin, who recently left the US Army, has actually seen combat...and I'm happy he's still with us today.
This song shows respect to those who died and serve for their country 🫡🫡
If you actually listen very closely and read the lyrics you will get emotional, i legitimately shed a tear when i listened to this especially the "we add two years to our ages" and his friend "cried out for his mother"
Was just laying down in bed for the night here in the United States and now I'm wide awake again LOL another awesome song by my favorite band
Grandson "Were you a hero in war?"
Winters "No but I served in a company of heroes."
Man, what a powerful song! If this doesn't stir your soul, break your heart, and bring a tear to your eye, then you are already dead. Great song as always, Sabaton!🤘
The part about crying for mom literally shook me to the core, powerful, tragic, amazingly written and sung!
Amazing cover. Thank you, Sabaton and Motorhead, for this wonderful song. Rest in peace to the fallen heroes and to Lemmy ❤👍👍
love how on the "clinging like kids" line, its actually the kids having a blast with the band, and joakim is loving it.
Discovered Sabaton at 14. Got drafted at 17, joined the ranks at 19. Did my time, re-enlisted voluntarily last year. 23 today on stand-by call. Still marching on. Never looked back.
What country you from? You can get drafted as a minor?
@@ItsABucket Finland. National conscription starts with draft summons usually by 6 to 12 months before one turns 18. You can explain your current life situation at the draft board, and when would be the next ideal moment for you to enter service. In my case, i needed to finish my studies before i could enroll. So about a month after my graduation, i walked in through the gates of a local Air Command and the rest is history. Two years later i volunteered for re-enlistment into active-reserves following Russias invasion of Ukraine.
@@pohjantuulet247 ah, interesting
It took serious courage covering this song, one of Motorhead's most powerful. And you bloody nailed it. I hope I remember you playing this in Leeds for the first time for as long as I can remember things.
