- British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called a national election for July 4 on Wednesday (May 22), saying Britons would be able to choose their future in a vote his Conservatives are widely expected to lose to the opposition Labour Party after 14 years in power.
Ending months of speculation as to when he would call a new vote, Sunak, 44, stood outside his Downing Street office in pouring rain and announced he was calling the election earlier than expected, a risky strategy with his party far behind Labour in the opinion polls.
Almost shouting to be heard above an anthem associated with the Labour Party played by protesters just outside the gates to Downing Street, Sunak listed what he said were his achievements in government, not only as prime minister but also as a former finance minister.
"Now is the moment for Britain to choose its future," he said, describing that choice as one between stability with him and the unknown with Labour leader Keir Starmer.

Its clear the Labour/Tory cycle needs to end but both have enough "traditionalist" voters who hate the other side so much they'll keep they cycle going, mix that with the massive percentage of people not voting and its tough to chose anything. To be honest,Rishi's speech, came across as a honest & sincere speech with very broad understanding through a summary of current world affairs which could affect british stability. He also challenged the Labour party in their plan and i must agree with Rishi where is their plan. I am jo nobody public (taxpayer) and i have not seen a plan. I also agree we have worked hard so far post brexit & Covid. So i would encourage all to think before your desires for change, for the sake of change.

@catscan2022 means tested benefits plus personal income is not enough to sustain a family or anything, so yeah in most cases they're worse off unless they're working part time, claiming benefits and living without dependents
@catscan2022 My family are all disabled, my dad a carer, my mum works. We are on benefits yet could not dream of affording a holiday. I don't know what those people are doing but carers is 30hr per week. That is work in of itself.

Affording to pay tax shouldn't be a main signifier of work or strife is all I'm saying. The "hardworking taxpayer" narrative benefits absolutely nobody when people who don't pay tax still work incredibly hard and struggle. Even if there's pricks that aren't working as hard (like in the taxpayer category too!). This stuff is why the tories clamp down on already struggling, literally starving (see the people who have starved whilst on PIP) disabled people, because they "don't work hard enough". If somebody is caring 30hrs+ per week then works on top of that I'd say that's incredibly hardworking.
