Pothos Care 101: Is This the Easiest Houseplant to Care For?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 июл 2024
- Pothos, also known as Epipremnun aureum, HAS to be one of the easiest plants to care for...ever. It's native to French Polynesia and has become invasive in many tropical countries...but in our homes it's an epic plant!
I've got a few pothos varieties for you in this video:
- 'Satin' Pothos (Scindapsus Pictus)
- Green Queen Pothos
- Marble Queen Pothos
There are a few other cool varieties to look out for, too: golden pothos and neon pothos are some of my other favs.
It's exceptionally easy to care for, needing medium light, well-draining, nutrient-rich soil, and fertilization once a year or so. You can let the vines trail or climb, depending on your aesthetic.
Pothos propagation is best done via cuttings in water, as I find the soil method is slower and has a higher failure rate.

What's your favorite pothos variety and where did you get it?
I like getting houseplant cuttings from Etsy. It's a way to support nice houseplant enthusiasts and it's usually an affordable way to try several varieties. I especially love the marble queen, neon pothos thrives in bright light, and N'Joy has interesting variegation.
Once I got into loving the pothos plants. My favorite became the Marble Queen Pothos. The varigation is amazing!
Satin pothos!...received one from Etsy a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately I killed it within a week. It arrived in good health but became a tossed salad in the mail, so I replanted it immediately. I think I should have held back watering because it developed root rot a few days later. So sad...it was such a beautiful plant with soft, fuzzy leaves! I managed to salvage some very small cuttings and I am attempting to root at least one in water. Not sure it will make it.
@@zorrokitty796 Give them some time and lots of sunlight and they will start rooting withing 2-3 weeks!
Thanks so much for the encouragement! They are tiny cuttings but I have not lost all hope just yet. @@bringitback457
When I lost my daugther, got a whole bunch of plant arrangements. I knew nothing about plants then, so everything had died, except for this 1 leaf of pothos that my mom propagated in a little vase of water. I was so afraid to lose it and so I never touched it. That 1 leaf and a bunch of roots survived for 11 years, I finally planted it in a pot of soil recently. 3 leaves so far ☺️🥰
That's amazing!
This is so sweet ❣️
I'm sorry for the loss of your daughter I can't imagine such pain but what a neat blessing to have the one plant survive and it be from your Mom to bring you joy . How is your pothos doing now?
J Levine Thanks! It continues to thrive 😊
I've got a sprig ( two tiny leaves) that snapped off some plant. Refused to throw it so put it in a tiny jar with three tablespoons of water. After three weeks one tiny root appeared. Hopefully there will be another before Christmas.
Is this one of the property brothers
Basically
Audrey Talbot no he’s a plant brother
That’s what I was thinking!!
Are you related?! There is a slight resemblance...
Hss the step brother
I just realized today that the lobby of my corporate office has 2 towers with vines and vines of green queen pothos wrapped around them. I'm itching to snip off a vine or 2(or 3) at the end of the day when nobody's looking. The maintenance staff is just going to trim it anyway once its overgrown. Might as well help them out...🤔
You should! ;)
I got my golden pothos from a random window sill at work lol
One clippping is growing in my office and one is home 😁
Lol....go for it! I got my pothos from a cutting off of a friends plant.
I did 😘
I know your comment is old, so I'm hoping you did it and you have a happy little plant now!!
I have a golden pothos that has been in my family for 70 years and has been propagated numerous times. I was finally given my own cutting but I have a black thumb and am so scared of killing it! So, thanks for this video!
How did your cuttings work out?
@@jlevine8018 fantastic! They are alive and well, I even propagated some and planted it in another pot and it's doing great too. I just water them when I remember to and that's it.
That's great! I'm a little obsessed with propagating my pothos. It's the only plant I haven't managed to murder. LOL
@@jlevine8018 hah! Same. It makes me feel like I'm a great gardener because I cant kill it!
i would like to propagate u
I'm usually skeptical about any video title with "101" because they're usually not well thought out, but yours is very informative. I subscribed because of your attention to detail.
Appreciate that, Gerald!
Me too
The leaves of those pothos are ginormous ♥️
I got a golden pothos as a gift and she’s my first house plant ever and I’m obsessed with her and she makes me so happy, and she’s so beautiful and green and she’s growing so fast and she’s finally digging her Ariel roots from her vines inside her planter she’s my baby
You sound like me when I talk about my plants 😂💚
You sound right on your way to becoming a crazy plant person...
Did you name her? I called mine Clarence :)
We use these in the aquarium hobby to soak up nitrates from our fish tanks, the plants love the excess nitrate and ammonia from fish waste, and the fish love the water quality that pothos offer. Less water changes, less maintenance.
@@GuacamoleyNacho They are placed on the aquarium top with just the roots hanging into the water. Some fish species will eat the roots, like goldfish so its not suitable for all.
Never need to change water, unless doing filter maintenance, just top up when evaporating.
Thank you! Is what am setting up to do with a 55 gal aquarium.
This plant can survive even my care
I just got my first Pothos cuttings from my grandmothers 50 year old plant that has never been repotted and it has no soil but it thrives in neglect and is beautiful!
Amazing Annika!
Annika Ewing YES! My Marble Queen has no soil left either but once a week on dusting day I take it into the kitchen and flood it with water. She just comes to life. And she looks great the rest of the week too. Incredible plants. I’m glad you have one from your grandma. My stepmother has a 40 year one.
Wow! Amazing
I got my first pothos! It’s my first houseplant ... ever! Haha, wish me luck 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽
Perfect 1st houseplant also the ZZs are good 1st houseplants.

Is it alive?
“one of the easiest to care for” me with my dying pothos in the corner🥲 i have so many thriving plants and my pothos is supposed to be the easiest out of all of them but i’m killing it😫
Make sure there is lots of drainage
Don’t over water...they droop when they need to be watered.
Sadly sometimes plants just die! So I wouldn’t worry about it too too much lol. (If you’re doing everything right ofc)
I live in hawaii, so i actually found one of these lovelies growing wild on the side of the road. im propagating some in my room atm. its growing great already! C:
Lucky you!
Wow beautiful post a pic of the plant 🌱 please
When i was in kintergarden i was given this plant and i use to water it myself during its whole life and the plant grew to trail all around the kitchen ceiling! 30ish years later and I'm looking to give it another go 😀
i just bought a pothos today as my first houseplant! i think it’s a golden pothos, but im not totally sure as i’m new to plants. thanks for the video, my plant will appreciate it lol!
Good luck!
I have a marble queen that I actually got a big box grocery store plant section. This grocery store obviously has a very dedicated and capable person running their plant section or a great supplier. The plants all seemed surprisingly happy. It was a great price and it’s climbing even in my lower light room.
About 25 years ago i had a small one of those, i was too young and had no clue how to take care of it yet it grew for almost 3 meters around my room.
Sadly it started dying years after and I didn’t know what to do,
Now i got a new young one again and glad i found this video to learn more this time.
Oh I had missed that one!! I loooove all pothos plants, I have quite a few varieties and even more plants!!
Useless info of the day:
Pothos means lust/yearning
Epipremnum means on (top of) a trunk
Scindapsus was an ancient greek musical instrument with strings (similar to a lyra) 😊
No way! Thanks for the info, I had no idea
@@epicgardening you're welcome!!
Well, to be honest, except for the word 'pothos' which is still used, I had to look what the other words meant, because they did sound greek, but even I had no idea, because they are not commonly used ones 😸
I just got a marble queen pothos. It's absolutely GORGEOUS! The variegation is what attracted me to it. 🤩
Nice healthy plants and a fun video. Thanks.I constantly trim back my pothos and put the cuttings in wine bottles, water bottles or anything that will hold water, keep them topped up and have pothos all over my apartment. Super easy and forgiving plant
Love that, I'm going to have quite the jungle myself over here!
Beautiful plants you got there. Your potho's leaves are so huge. Love it!!
I’m renting a tiny apartment while I’m in college and I really only have a spot to put one plant, and I’m really interested in pothos because it seems doable and they’re so pretty! Thanks for the guide!
Pothos is a great "only have space for 1 plant" plant
I'm getting my first pothos tomorrow and I'm so excited! I was a little nervous prior to watching the video, but after learning a bit more about the plant, now I'm just excited!!!
Thank you for these tips. The specific way you covered everything was extremely helpful. Great detail and advice. Much appreciated
I found a sliver pothos at Fry's grocery store in AZ and at Walmart. I'm growing a cutting in my fish tank. Its growing great.
I like to give my pothos water left over from boiling veggies and sometimes coffee grounds.
Good way to make use of water that would otherwise be wasted
oh really??
Interesting. Does it work?
YES! Spread the love for cooking water^^
Noodles, rice, potato or veggies! Everything is great
How often do you do this, please? Thanks!

Just got a pothos plant today & I learned a bunch from this video thank you 🙏🏽
My sister in law just gave me a golden pothos start today so I'm binging care videos lol it's my first ever pothos plant and I am super excited to grow it!
I love pothos!! All varieties, but my favorite is the marble queen.
Gorgeous isn't it
I have a Pothos N’Joy and man it’s struggling. It’s been my most difficult plant so far which is crazy since like you said most people find Pothos to be easy! I went on vacation and didn’t water it for 2 weeks…watered when I got home and half the leaves turned yellow/brown and died. Cut those off - repotted because the soil seemed parched and now the soil is molding and and plant looks like death. Going to try to cut up the survivors and propagate and start fresh! Fingers crossed! It was so pretty when I got it.
My mom got a Pothos plant when she gave birth to my brother 49 years ago and it's still alive.
I'm just beginning to grow houseplants, and your videos are helping so much! Thank you
So glad to hear this!
Blue pothos i live in Newfoundland i got my from a friend and i love it
I've had these in both bright, indirect light, and in a dark room with one window located under an overhang of a deck. They are tough plants! ETA: I got a Pearls and Jade pothos and a Neon pothos at my local grocery store. They're very pretty.
Yeah they can take just about anything!
how are the pearls? i heard they need lots of care
I love you, Epic Gardening
I love all Pothos! So excited to have found your channel. I like your laid back vibe!
Thank you!
Neon pothos are my favorite, especially during winter! Really bright and vibrant. I found mine at my local hardware store
Love neon...one of the only ones I don't have
My favorite pothos plant is the marble queen 🤗 I bought in a little flower shop in Edmonton.
Fantastic variety!
Thank you for sharing this information. I’m into plants now and my son gave me a pothos golden which I didn’t know about it but after watching your video I’ll try my best to take care of it.
Great vid! Instant follow. I have a Marble Queen that I bought the first time I saw one at the hardware store I work at. I had only previously seen the golden pothos on plant videos on youtube and didn't realize there was a type this variegated.
I just bought one today and I named it Sherman 😆! Lol
LOL nice
For such a basic plant that you can find basically anywhere, I'm obsessed with them. I really want one of every variety. So far I have a golden, marble queen, and a neon, cebu blue, and a satin (even tho it's not a pothos). Out of all of those I searched the longest for the neon and my favorite one is definitely my cebu blue. I found all of mine at Walmart except the neon, I got it at lowes. Now I really want an n'joy!! They're so cute.
Ahhh you have a Cebu Blue I'M JELLY
My daughter got a green queen as a gift. Sat in her dark bedroom looking sad for a year. I bought a house and she gave it to me. I put it near a window with 8 hours of light and this plant is practically SINGING in front of this window! A very happy plant indeed!
I absolutely love the hanging shelf you have for your Scindapsus pictus! Now I need one!
Get one!
Thanks for sharing. Your pothos look so full. Good to see other varaients❤️
My favorite is the Satin pothos and I just got one today called “pothos N’Joy”
That's a fantastic variety!
Will pothos affect or change my ethos?
🤔🤔🤔
It might your pathos❤️❤️❤️😂😂
Lmao
Maybe your logos...
Ethos, Pothos, Logos😂
i love your channel, especially houseplant videos as i live in a city and am just working with what i got at the moment. ever since i got LED bulbs as an additional light source for my pothos, they have been growing so fast!
Incredible! Yeah, if you give them a healthy dose of light they respond QUITE fast.
Your extremely knowledgeable and I love your channel!
My mom gave me hers before she passed. I've struggled with it til where I had to cut all the vines and propagate them. It seems to be responding better.
The basic “B” pothos was my first house plant!
Also, this is a good lookin plant man 😎
You're too kind!
Manjula Pothos is so beautiful, it’s my favorite.
Thank you for sharing this very Educational video i love the pothos
Hello Kevin, fantastic information, did not know that about the pothos not flowering. My favorite is the Marble queen, mine is pretty big, But, this past summer I found a 4 inch pot of Manjula, wasn't sure what it was at first. I found it at walmart- marked as Pearls and Jade, which I also have a huge one and a small one. One I found 2 weeks ago at our nursery- it is a neon marble queen? , so pretty. Looks just like a marble queen but bright neon green, and variegated. Okay maybe I do not have a favorite, love them all! Happy growing!
No need to pick a favorite when they're all so awesome! Happy growing.
@@epicgardening Indeed! Happy growing!
Hey! I know you 😊
How's your studying going? I was watching your Chanel earlier
HOW can your pothos be so BIG?? even before they start to trail? i thought they got bigger by age or only by giving them a pole or special special nursery poison only available in the buiz?? im desperatly trying to find someone who talks more about how to get them BIG (not just small leaf + stretchy all over the room) i want HUGE GIGANTIC ones like your green queen.
Part of these is the way they're propagated. There are a TON of individually propagated leaves in these pots to make it super bushy
Green queen also has bigger leaf than the golden potho, and much bigger than the marble, and the satin.
Ryan Singrossi I have seen Golden Pothos leaves that's 3Ft wide here in the wild. It's seriously SO common lol. They are VERY HUGE! 🤗🌱
did you figure out where or how to get a potos huyge leaves? is it variety or just because of light and humidity? i know how to make pothos bushy. but my marble queen and varigated one have medium sized leaves.
Amanda on "Planterina" has this exact video on how to make your plants get big leaves.. Check her out. She is fantastic with plants
House plant beginner here; I just got some new plants yesterday and I’m so excited to learn all there is to know! Your channel is great!
Get after it Erin!
Epic Gardening. Just giving an unwanted/not asked for update. I now have 7 houseplants in my bedroom at my place! I’m propagating my Pothos plants; like I saw in your other video! My plants are happy, healthy and so am I! Thanks for your advice and informational videos! I’ve learned so much!
So good. You are a great communicator. Very pleasant.
I have always had several pothos throughout my house, the most recent house I moved into they have completely halted growth. Not dying, but not growing either. Plenty of light, no change in watering, it’s really weird.
"it's not a crime, it happens all the time!" 🤣
Really enjoyed how you taught us that.
LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos . . . I am the quintessential brown thumb, so seeing you with your ultra green thumb in propagation mode gives me joy.
Thank you so much! Don't worry, we'll get your green thumb in action soon
Thanks so much for the advice! I just picked up a Pothos today at Walmart and I was worried about lighting. I have South and West facing windows but I placed my plant on top of my writing secretary along the south wall of my room. Hopefully, it will do fine.
It'll do just fine, they're very tolerant
I'm having mine on my office desk which isn't close to any window. However, I put it near a South facing window in weekends so it gets its needed sunlight dose.
Cebu blue pothos is my favorite , I got it as a few cuttings and had no idea it existed but it is available to buy online though a bit on the rare side
I really want to get my hands on that one!
Ana Dorsett oh my gosh i need to add one of these to my plant collection 😍

Lowe's has Cebu blue... that's where I found mine
I have both the marble and green queen. Excellent plants and low maintenance! Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!
This taught me so much. I really want to get one of these this next spring. I can’t wait to start a pothos jungle as well lol
you should get a Peace lily and do a video on it!
Will do!
I was wondering why all of my soil propagated pothos died in a matter of days! I thought I did something wrong and come to find out they prefer water propagation.🤦🏽♀️ I just ordered a 36 pack of glass test tubes.
I’m about to be SO unhinged propagating making Frankenstein style pothos and no one can stop meeee!!!😈😈😈🪴🪴🪴
My favorite Pothos is the green queen, thank you for the information
this was really cool, i juwst subbed. got my first house and i want to fill it with GREEN! pothos was my very first plant, i just got it this weekend. I am pretty good with outdoor plants, but indoors are a whole new game for me. my pothos looks like a mixture of the green queen and the other one with white/light green all over it. cant wait to see how it grows and eventually propagate it
Hello! Two things: which soil would you recommend from a store like Lowe’s? And also, do pothos need to be moved to a bigger pot as they grow? Especially if we re-add clippings? Or can they stay in the same hanging basket and conform to its home?
Organic soil. You don't have to move to a bigger pot they thrive when root bound. You can take clippings and just pin it down in the dirt of the same pot or can propagate it in a new pot. Just take a clipping and put it in water. When you see roots growing you can put it in soil.
I have Golden, Marble Queen, literally three leaves of a formerly lustrous Jade N Pearl, and I mistakenly have what I thought was a Silver Pothos. Come to find out it's a Silver Philodendron.
They're commonly confused!
This was a great video!!! Subscribing now! My grandma is an Ohio/Florida snowbird that likes to collect native vines and air plants in the winter. I’ve always admired a beautiful two-toned yellow and white pothos plant that she had scavenged and potted. She would just leave it outside her trailer when she would come back to Ohio in the spring and it was still kicking when she got back in October. Last summer she brought it back to put by the pool for the summer. It turned completely yellow and started looking unhappy. She told me to take it home to see if I could rehab it. I stuck it on a balcony ledge in my house where it gets no direct light and most of the plant has turned a beautiful dark jade green . I have a vine that’s 13 feet long! It’s my favorite of all my plants and I propagated plants for my kids to take with them someday. Hopefully we’ll all always have a part of my grandmas Florida jungle scavenge! 😜♥️
yvonne stefanski I wonder if all the chlorine and muratic acid from the pool were what was hurting it. I’m glad you “fixed” it. 👍🏻
My coworker had pruned her golden pothos and gave me some even though I didn't want any. I've barely done anything to the things besides put them in a glass and change out the water every week and they are putting down major roots and hella new leaves. I can't wait to pot them!
I love green queen.. I have never seen that. I have only seen the variegated variety which bores me.
Yeah, it's one of the funny plants where the non variegated variety is more Uncommon!
Thats why i hunted done a jade pothos, so simple and solid dark green.
Down*
One of my Marble Queen tendrils reverted back to solid green, so I kinda got a Green Queen, except is grows as slow as the Marble Queen.
where did you get your "propagation station"?

I have Golden Pothos and love them!
You're Great Kevin! Thanks for the tips and the knowledge! I love all of Pothos, it's hard to choose! I have the Golden Pothos & the Brazil, but I would love to Care for them All! Sincerely, Dolla Savin
Interesting side note: Spider plants are NOT companion plants with Pothos.
Great tip there Marie!
Will they not survive together? Good to know because I've been considering mixing a few of my plants
@@sarahkanieski8293~ My experience/observation was noticing my luxuriant spider plants actually being decimated by close proximity to aggressively growing Pathos plant. I lost about five of my six pots of spider plants!
I cant for the life of me seem to get my pothos to grow, they dont grow very fast and when they do grow its all one sided. I cant get the fuller look. :-(
Don't stress about the fuller look, that's almost always from planting many cuttings in one pot
I just picked up a gorgeous marble queen pothos from Trader Joe's! My first one and I'm loving it
Nice! Trader Joe's for the win, baby!
I have the golden pothos but no one knows where it came from. Lol. My Mom does not remember and I just remember it being this one leaf plant. I now use it in my Betta fish bowl and it has about ten leaves. Also today my Mom got a package in the mail from my great grandmother and it had seven pothos plants! Two of them are the gorgeous marble queen which I have been wanting for so long. The rest I think are all golden pothos. I am not sure on two of them because It is just stems but they are alive. I put them in water with the smaller pothos from the bunch and now I just have to wait. They are so amazing and beautiful! I love them so much. I cannot wait to start propagating them and have my own pothos jungle in my bathroom and in my fish bowls. Hehehe. I have four fish bowls. I can't wait to have marble queens in them too. I'm excited!
