It upsets me that while most of the world's subway systems keep improving and expanding, ours has actually shrunken and worsened since WWII for many reasons.
It was getting better until 2010 then when we got Dumbastardo mayor all the work of 25 years went down the drain. Now we have swagger man and we are addressing the same problems we had in 1978. Now we are starting again from scratch, how many people have to be pushed on the tracks before people demand change.
I love the NYC Subways. No matter what’s going on in the world, it’s still running. No matter the flaws, it’s still running and long after we are all dead & gone, it will still be running. The only thing i want out of the Subways is for it to expand. We need areas that are transit deserts to stop being deserts. Along with maintenance, we need so much more of the Subway in other parts the city & especially in Staten Island. Even with that, the subways have a fan in me & im so thankful it’s running. In fact I’m on the 2 Train right now so I’m really thankful 😂😂😂! Here’s to another 120 years of the NYC Subways!
Do you know you have the opportunity to operate a NYC subway car from the 1950’s called the R17? It is at the shoreline trolley museum. They also have an IND R9, IRT Hi-V, and an IRT Lo-V.
A minor correction the IND was owned and operated by the city from day 1. In the case of the other two systems the IRT and BMT trackage and stations belong to the city the two private companies though had exclusive right to operate trains on them. The private companies were responsible for all aspects of running them including repairs to the roadbed and the stations.
Here’s what I hope to see the next 20 years a connection to LaGuardia airport. A connection into Staten Island would be amazing to finally connect the five boroughs as well as the 2nd Avenue subway
@@TwoNote Never heard of that. There was a plan for an AirTrain to LGA like there is one to JFK, but Hochul killed it. It would have been useless anyway.
I work there and I would have to say, it's the greatest show on earth. You see everything!! But I am also a long-time admirer of the New York City Subway, and I am also amazed by the history that you see there each day. I go out to others. Cities and ride their subways, which is nice and they have their own history and it's nothing compared to New York City Subway system. The London Underground comes a close second!!
The 42 Street Shuttle was formed out of the Dual Contracts when the IRT was split in half to form an H shape with separate parallel routes via Broadway 7 Avenue and Lexington Avenue. When the IRT was first founded, the route path looked like an S shape.
If they're going to expand the MTA subway system and not bankrupt the authority, the city and the state, the planning, design and construction divisions of the authority need to drastically reduce costs especially the soft costs.
That inaugural trip on the IRT actually took 25 minutes to get to Harlem, despite the "15 Minutes To Harlem" claim boasted in the upcoming system's advertising slogan. Still, 25 minutes to Harlem back in 1904 was pretty good.
Start rebuilding the brand new 8 Thrid Ave Elevated line back in the south Bronx sence the Q T trains is definitely being exstend to East Harlem and west side across 125 and 137 street to connect to the 1 9 trains.
I went to New York on a field trip with my mom back in 2017, surely I love the New York’ Culture. But the subway trains is a gem legend of American’s public transportation. But at least 120 years of history. I wish I could visit again with my family, My dad used to been on New York between Brooklyn and Buffalo. (I think), I wasn’t born in these cites. I was born and grew up in Baltimore mostly. ❤️ *New York RULES!* 🗽🇺🇸
As a former buff. It sucks that they really changed up the look from the old cars. The front window was the best of it years ago. Now its just bland besides the history its not full of variety as it was years ago.
One big improvement needed are station platform barriers that only open once the train arrives- which would end the danger of falling of being push onto the tracks.
Eventually they are definitely gonna rebuild the 8 and ninth and 3rd Avenue Elevated line back in Brooklyn and Queens village which is tenth Ave Elevated line I'm telling you. Including the inter broughtro express Brooklyn and Queens. Exstending the 6 Pelham line to co op city mall I'm telling you right now.
0:40 lmao someone hops the train, how they put this on the news? But side note they should have been modernizing the train system little by little over the years instead of just trying to catch up in the 80s, now this is just declining and people hate the mta

The Second Avenue Subway was first proposed in the 1920s and the first three stations opened in 2017. In the first two decades of the last century, hundreds of stations were built, mostly by men using picks and shovels- there were no tunnel boring machines then. Moreover, the first subway lines (the IRT and BMT lines) were private concessions. The entire system was municipalized in 1940 and it's been downhill ever since- the city deferred maintenance and modernization (the signaling system is 100 years old and is a major reason headways between trains are so long). Many clean, modern subways in Asia (such as Tokyo) are nearly as old yet are vastly superior. They are largely run by private concessions. The subway as it currently exists is a foretelling of what "democratic socialism" that AOC and Bernie natter about would look like.
Absolutely and don’t forget the Federal Reserve scam that decimated our currency to zero. Prior to this international banker scam, the IRT was built within 5 years exactly as you stated in a time of United States prosperous era. Today? It takes these criminal politicians decades to go 2 miles on 2nd Ave with cost overruns, corruption and a worthless dollar…

That's only if you've never been anywhere else in the world.
The challenge isn’t how to expand the subway, it’s how to maintain it and how to reduce costs so there’s money to expand it.

Two different sizes of rail coach, plus different door configurations, mean such screens won't be practical....
They are useless and ineffective. The MTA will not spend billions of dollars installing them just because
@@CraigFThompson That just means the solution will require more innovation. Many things that were impractical in the past are mainstream today.

Expand the subways in Queens further more
There was a plan to add a lot of rail service in Queens, but the Great Depression, WWII and city leaders who hated public transit killed it

WRONG.
I always wondered. What happens if the tunnels collapse. That will flood the entire city most likely right ?
The system has pumps working 24/7 keeping the stations from flooding.
If it floods, then major service changes will happen.
