  • 201 years after Thomas Jefferson climbed to the top of Sharp Top to fix the latitude with his pocket sextant, visitors joined actor and historian Bill Barker to recreate the event. Bill Barker's masterful portrayal of Jefferson is courtesy of Colonial Williamsburg.

The site below provides a historical record of Jefferson's calculations from 1815. The record suggests he measured more or less the prominence of the mountains from their eastern face. Also, Jefferson concluded that Flat Top was 157 feet higher than Sharp Top, not bad considering today's instruments show that Flat Top is 126 feet higher than Sharp Top.
Bottom line, what the actor stated about the elevations here, does not give an honest assessment of Jefferson's comments or calculations of the area.
