  • In January 2019 Kate McBride's video of her father pulling dead Murray cod from the Darling River shocked Australia.
Now she's intent on exposing locals' fears about their water and its possible health impacts.
Some in the community are worried about the safety of the water and other factors including skin irritations and a possible threat of motor neurone disease.
According to WaterNSW, in the last six months less water has flowed into the lower Darling catchment than at any time in its recorded history.
The Menindee Lakes system is now officially holding just 1.1 per cent of its capacity. So what next for those who rely on the Murray-Darling Basin for their livelihoods?

If you turn the cotton farmers into hemp farmers it would reduce the need for irrigation massively. Hemp needs very little irrigation. Bottom line: Large scale cotton farming is not sustainable in Australia.

I'm a cotton farmer from india. Our fields are by the mighty Ganga...we are big for India at 36 sq km. And I know how much water it needs. ALOT. But better water management is what is the key. If SW Australia diversifies into other crops someday you might not have enough for that either!! And above all this, a river is nature's gift to the people that live by it. A government should do nothing which disturbs the natural flow ideally.

You ask them to give you clean water now in court and to stop the pollution and that they start cleaning up and change their ways. Their pockets are probably filled with money they have earned over the back of the river, fish and people depending on the water. I admire Kate for trying to solve this urgent issue🌷👍

A BIG thank you to Kate, people of the Menindee district and the ACF for the expose on the dire state of the Darling River. I am from the Northern Basin of the Murray/Darling and find the ongoing, slow death of the river extremely distressing - it is equally putrid where there is "water" and you can walk across the totally dry river bed. It is NOT just drought and governments, both State & Federal have been too weak to deal with over usage of water. You're an inspiration Kate!

The biggest issue is the so called environmentally friendly nut milks. Almonds in this system use the most water and are so inefficient compared to dairy milk. Australia's cotton and rice industries in these areas are the most efficient and productive in the whole world - the climate in this area supports high quality cotton (better than polyester materials that need to be mined, then manufactured then shipped with fossil fuels to us from around the world. The seasonal wetting and drying associated with this land combined with irrigation suits production of rice and cotton in this area.

  • @FukaiKokoro

This woman is inspiring. We all need to do our part to help our planet, even the smallest of things can help.
We need to stop greed from destroying us all. Because sure greed is great temporarily. But long term when we can’t even live on our own planet what good is that money? It’s quite sad that our worlds governments have failed us so bad. They are elected to represent us. Yet they screw us every chance they get.
We must change something about how our governments are run. So they don’t have total power. And we are more involved in making big decisions for our society. Because obviously the way politics is currently done isn’t working. People are only representing their bank account and dgaf about how their political decisions effect the world and people.
Like we need more democracy. Like if someone thing is big and effects our earth or effects a lot of people it has to go to a vote / election. Politicians don’t have our best interests in mind anymore. I guarantee that the politicians are BOUGHT off by big cotton. It happens here in the US all the time. If a politician is pushing for something that’s obviously bad for their constituents and bad for the planet follow the money, it all goes back to them being bought off by corporations.
I also think we need to jail for life any politician who takes a single penny from big interests. Because it’s that detrimental to humanity’s future.

Im American, so I don't know who this so called modal is, but I like her! I have been watching many Australian shows on RUclips lately because I like Australia! I like Australian people! And I just watched one of your programs the other night about these farmers who started to study nature in the hopes to bring harmony back to their land, replanting weeds they were told have to be pulled up to farm. Very quickly the land started to be restored with an abundance of water being retained. Haven't we learned enough. Stop radically changing the landscape and study nature! It, has successfully been around for millions of years! Copy it, it knows best! But wait, those poor farmers were made to sell their pristine land to a Chinese mining company that stripped mind it. I have also watched another one of your programs about these farmers who are desperately suffering from drought, but there is a river running through their property that was full and they are forbidden to touch, even over flooding down farther into a forest. All because of your governments seedy dealings with Chinese owned farms further down river who have paid them off. They have been releasing the water from a reservoir at large volumes that the river can't handle it and most of the water is being wasted flooding into the forest. I would think Australians would have first dibs on this water than the Chinese! But I'm American, what do I know? Get China out of your country. Don't let your government sell you good people out to China!!

Basin cotton irrigators extract about five Sydney Harbours’ worth a year!
Irrigation accounts for about 70% of all surface water extracted in the basin.
Australia’s water accounts tell us that in 2017-18, basin cotton irrigators extracted some 2,500 billion litres (about five Sydney Harbours’ worth) or equivalent to about 35% of all the water extracted for irrigation.
Most of this water was extracted in the Northern Basin (covering southern Queensland and northern New South Wales). But increasingly cotton is becoming a preferred crop in the Southern Basin (southern NSW to South Australia).
Overall, the area of land in cotton and the water extracted for cotton increased by 4% in 2017-18 relative to 2016-17.
Cotton is a thirsty crop. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics cotton uses, on average, more than 7 million litres (or about three Olympic-sized swimming pools) per hectare.
At a global scale, the volume of water extracted by cotton irrigators to produce one kilogram of cotton fabric averages more than 3,000 litres.

This has be treated carefully, its a clear sign of excess of nitrogen and ammonia in the water. Solution already exists. Government should pitch in and create a water treatment plant.

Everyone should be backing Kate her family and all those supporting and suffering from this devastating effect on Australian lands.
Instead of resonating with Greta Gumberg, engaging in celebrity sourcery!
This savatage on our Darling river is not acceptable. Collision and corruption in the sale and raping of the Australian waters and natural water systems.
What happened to purifying sea water technology?

Rivers and wetlands are not dying on their own development and greed are killing them . Keep up the good work. Polatition's come and go . When you get good support enjoy it and get the most you can done . Anything possative be glad . The Jordan River in Utah was all surrounded by farms in the 1970's. In the 1950's marsh it's now a narrow strip of nature. It's tributaries in Salt Lake City just trickle through under ground culverts. I did my best with others good luck

The Darling river is subject to drought. Water has become big business way out West. Multiple state governments are involved ! Hence mistakes and photo opportunities. 150 years ago sheep made many many farmers very very rich. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then. Times change. Greed and injustice only increases in our society. The Darling river? Great place to shoot kangaroos 👍

When we were born we learn right from wrong and the consequences of it, we are told by adult's that everything will be ok to work hard and be proud of our country. What is happening to the Murray darling river system is a embarassment to Australia. It is caused by government greed and corruption of government and farmers, they are environmental criminals and charges should be layed. Somebody needs to get some heavy machinery out and clear these man made barriers that are restricting the flood plans from flowing. Stand Up and be counted people stop buying products made from cotton if you really care.

The nice young lady wants to help the river wastage and drought, yet she’s running sheep?. Sheep and beef livestock require plenty of water. Where do the farmers get their water from if not that river? Need to change to something that can survive those harsh dry conditions without draining a already reducing water supply. A dry river for 8 months! Cotton and Almond farming taking out so much does not help either. Looks like a complete rethink of what crops will actually suit Australia’s climate rather than what crop to plant to make more money. Change will happen wether they choose it now or it’s forced upon them in time too come.

The world need young people to get involved. Politics is at the core of driving our societies and the fresh eyes of our youth see clearly through the fog. However, when one thinks of a political future in terms of a career that is where the corruption begins. Politics should not be a career it should only be a steeping stone as anything more opens the door to an intrenched bureaucracy. Thats is the wisdom of term limits.

So, if the water is safe as defined by the government, then let them use ONLY that water for ALL their uses. Then see how fast the rules change when they get sick, develop health issues and have no alternatives because the water is safe by their own definition(s).
