  • This is how I find photography jobs at travel and photography trade shows. This was at WTM London.

    Finding photography jobs is obviously one of the hardest part of being a photographer. Freelance travel photography is tough. But, you can use trade shows - no matter what type of photographer you are - to find these kinds of jobs and this kind of work.
    This video is from WTM London where I wandered around sharing my various types of pitches and the different ways I find those photography jobs at the trade shows.

      As a food/restaurant photography specialist, I'd love to hear your thoughts of blending travel with food and how do you pitch, giving examples for this kind of event. When you're next zipping through the UK, drop me a line, coffee/beer's on me.

    I work in tourism here in Malta, and used to work in hotels etc and from experience of being at these WTM fairs and similar travel fairs, if I can add that you should really try to get to talk to whoever is in the stand on the first day or in the morning and I would also stick to not spending too much time selling yourself but simply asking them if they would be interested in getting photos from you and if so then contact them via email. For us to hire a stand tends to be very expensive so we are there sitting at the booths waiting to get potential clients that will make us money, so they might be too busy to take the right amount of time to get to know you as a photographer and decide on giving you their business at that fair. I would also suggest that if you want to organize meetings then set the meetings with the actual tourism associations and not with the actual tour operators or DMC's (destination managements companies). I would contact the TO's and DMC's approx. 1 week after the fair and get them to see your work via email. Most agents are not necessarily the owners or top management so they are there and usually have to come back with potential clients that will make them money as most bosses only think of getting that money and don't care on how you get it. So the pressure is on these agents so best to get their cards, have a chat with them over a beer if you manage and then contact them once back after the fair and I personally think you will get alot who will then have more time to give you

    I’ve done a lot of booth duty over the years. For cold calling, cleaning up your appearance and removing the baseball cap would improve your chances.

    Yes! Looking at yourself as a business. I can't express this more. Present yourself on line and in person as a professional. You don't have to wear a business suit, it's your message that matters. And that message is about your potential client and what problem are you going to fix for them. Nice video Brendan.

    Interesting insight on how to get jobs as a photographer. I would definitely agree that having a "Professional" looking website would be a major plus for sure. Also you have the RUclips vids that are another feather in your cap. I think it would be pretty cool to be able to travel around the world to take photos, but im sure its not ALL glitz and glamour. Great Video Brendan, thanks for the informative tips on how to get photo work.

      Definitely not all glitz. It's a lot of work. But, I wouldn't trade it for any other job in the world.

    This is great stuff, Brendan. I was wondering if you attended this kind of conferences way back when you where starting out, and if you could comment about your experiences back then.
    I mean before you had “a trillion” subscribers, views and so on on the different social platforms. I’d imagine people would be much more inclined to listen to you now than back then.
    I’m talking mostly about the business meetings, since cold calling you make it clear it’s not worth it unless you have something unique to offer.
    How did you approach the business meeting requests back then and what was your value proposition to potential clients when you did not have even a fraction of your current social media footprint? I’m asking because I’m at that stage. Thanks!

    Great advice... been in corporate sales for 25 years and totally agree with your advice. Don’t be “me too” or “so what”, have your elevator pitch and follow up ready with your Why!
    Oh yeah, cold calling really really sux but when ya need to pay the bills, suck it up and crack on!! Lol 😆 cheers Jase

  • @treyfoerster8759
    @treyfoerster8759 4 года назад +1

    Uggghhh! It's NOT cold calling!! I was in sales (retired now) and it should be looked at "opportunity to establish relationships" as it takes a relationship over a period of time to make a sale and keep those sales continue.

    • @nightfighter7452
      @nightfighter7452 4 года назад

      But its still called cold calling, pitching to someone you've had no prior contact with

    • @treyfoerster8759

      @@nightfighter7452 "Cold" is negative and creates a psychological obstacle and for introverts that's an important distinction. Think about making a friend rather than making a sale if it is the first time - talk with (not to) them, listen more than ask questions, that's how you find out what their problem/challenge is then you have a better idea of how you can be their unique solution. For an extrovert, it doesn't matter what you call it. "Cold calling" is an old term and deserves to be in the dustbin of sales history.

    i'm interested in pitching more so i would welcome a video that focuses on that. some really practical, super ground level examples. i sell my photos but i don't take them for any company. companies buy them from time to time but i don't go on assignments for them to take them cause i want the freedom to do what i want. however i'm curious about getting more traditional photos gigs so i'm curious about pitching. what does that mean? are you going up to them and saying "i want to do a photo series on blah blah blah in portugal, i think we should partner up?" or something to that affect? or are you just pitching yourself, your bonofides, your followers on social media and etc?

    • @BrendanvanSon
