    So awesome to see you take someone like Kelly and share her journey.
    For the beginners, winging sucks at first. There’s no way around it. You WILL get dragged down wind. You WILL fall a lot. You WILL be sore in places you’ve never been before.
    I foil surf every day and I wanted to quit winging in the beginning. But eventually you see progress every season and you see the light.
    The FIRST time you taxi in and land where you launch, you’re soooo stoked.
    The FIRST time you complete a gybe after many failed attempts, you can’t wait to do it again and do it better and faster.
    Then you’ll foil all the way in to where you launched. You’ve made it.
    Then you have a session where you land upwind from you launched and you have to float the wing and surf it downwind a bit.
    Then you destroy your wing on your foil or a tree and begin to question why you chose such an expensive hobby. But it’s all worth it.

    Being honest about the journey will help get more people on the water trying and not giving up. Most other sites try to attract subscribers by making and claiming it is easy. Documenting Kelly's journey, with tips of how she can improve from the level of a never ever, to where she is already at, is super encouraging. Thanks for sharing your passion for wind, water, snow and life! It's winter up here in Canada but the spring, she's a coming. Getting pumped! Appreciated.

    As an old-school WindSurfer, mast, boom and sail, everything you said makes perfect sense, I have never used a foil fin or a wind foil but foot placement, balance putting your weight forward once you are up and planing all makes perfect sense to me, I am 56 years old and it’s been about 20 years since I have been on the water but I feel like this is something I could do pretty damn easy

    I agree - these videos have the best collection of Tips and Tricks to solve issues when learning. Also - showing wipeouts, crashes and other situations that toss the rider are very helpful. Showing the trials and tribulations of learning help enormously - watching an expert fly and gybe is cool but not all that helpful for learning.

    These videos have been very helpful for two reasons. First is the pointers you provide. Second is helping me keep the right mindset that I'm going to fall down -- a lot -- but I will eventually get it. I jumped into the sport without ever seeing anyone do it in person. I received all my gear from Adventure Sports two weeks ago. Last week I was on the water five consecutive days. (On the Chesapeake Bay with 50 degree water and one day had 25 degree wind chill.) Progressing nicely thanks to the right gear and your videos. I watch them over and over to help me prepare for my next session.

    It’s been great to see these videos at repeated intervals as I have progressed from a beginner and each time something different now makes sense. This time it was angling the board to control the lift. Next time (when spring gets here) I’ll be ready to understand unsticking the board. Right now I am still at a very passive stage of getting up, need very strong gusts.

    Thanks for the help. I just had my first try and it didn't go well. Now I guess that's standard.
    I was told to start on a sup and just deal with the wing. I kept getting blown downwind and couldn't tack back to shore. The sup was stable and easy to stand but resisted turning.
    After a few paddle backs I mostly practiced on shore. Plus it was crowded and I didn't want to get in the way of the rippers.
    The wind was almost parallel to shore but slightly off. Iwas starting straight downwind and trying to return to shore before entering the crowd area.
    With the wind going from left to right I think I should try with the board perpendicular and going left across the wind and trying a smaller sup with three little fins instead of the huge aircraft carrier.
    I didn't want to get too far from shore and that limited the one time I got it going towards shore.
    I lost any confidence to try the foil board but now after your video I must try again.
    I also held the wing in front which was causing the downwind effect. I'm meeting with someone today to give me some pointers.
    I also realized my foil board is too small and will likely need something bigger.
    I'm thinking about a dryland trainer with a swivel base like an old office chair might help.
    There's also a lagoon that flows out as the tide drops. I was thinking about tying a rope to the bridge pyling and having a constant flow of water to learn with. I saw a guy surfing it like water skiing without a boat.
    Thanks again. You earned a subscribe!🎉

    I’ve gone out about 10 times and have just started being able to stand up and balance. I’m a bigger guy so the board doesn’t get moving like some of my mates. I went out in weak conditions a few times and that was really tricky.

    hello damien
    i am very glad about your instructions to wing foiling.
    me, as a veteran windsurf teacher i always remind my pupils of the importance of the position of the front arm. as i suppose the dinamic is very similar in both sail structures. so my suggestion is to keep your front arm as streched as possible, thinking more in pushing the front hand away from you!
    i hope i could give all learners a nice tip..

    Getting better with each time out...i'm keeping too much wind in the wing and rounding into the wind....I also feel i'm keeping too much heel/windward pressure to counteract the pressure on the wing, but when i start foiling, i feel i am too much on the windward rail and try to move my feet to the center of the board which does not have a good ending!! loving it all and thanks for the videos and podcasts! keep 'em coming...

    • @DamienLeroyYouTube

      Matt, try a toe heal toe heal movement. Toe heal - toe heal to move or adjust helps with not completely taking the weight off the board as you know that leads to falling. Little shimmy movement. Should help.

    These videos are super helpful thanks for all your work. I love the tag team approach in this video it's quite hilarious yet informative. I think an important point you make is the don't over sheet point. It's often the case that I stall or spin out by over sheeting and then fall. I think a simple explanation of the Bernoulli effect would be super helpful also just to make it clear that if you sheet in too much you're killing the lift in the wing.

    In some other videos I have seen people pump the board to get it up on the foil versus pumping the wing and it works very well. It doesn't take much pumping of the board down into the water to get the board up on the foil, and then you are moving in a controlled manner. The pumping of the wing itself tends to cause folks to be overpowered and put the wing in a bad position and then they fall into the water. Just a friendly tip for you all.

    Hi, thank you very much for your videos. I appreciate the tips a lot.
    I noticed that she placed the front feet on the side of the board. Is it a tip that help to stabilized during the first sessions, or should the feet be center (7:10) ?
    I have some difficulty to position the wing so I can place the board upwing.

  • @claykarmel4730

    Great videos. Thanks. A few questions on tuning the rig... inflation and foil position. My wing recommends 6-8 psi. Should I use 6 for lighter air and 8 for heavier air? Vice-versa? Does it matter? In my early efforts, I found my board always turning downwind (not yet foiling). I adjusted the foil strut as far forward as it would go and this helped (still not foiling, but able to work upwind). I'm sure it shouldn't stay there as I get better at handling the board and start foiling. What affects the fore-aft placement of the foil strut? When should it be forward of the center of the strut box? Aft of center? I have a very large foil (2450) because I'm 200+ in a light wind venue. What will the signs be that I should use a smaller foil?

    • @DamienLeroyYouTube
      @DamienLeroyYouTube  3 года назад

      Clay, As for PSI I would go with 8psi all the time. Its good to have that wing firm all the time. As for your foil placement all foils are different so its hard to say. From the sound of it you need to keep driving your back foot when you are going one way or another. That helps turn the board sideways to the wind helping you go into the wind, think of tacking your board and not getting pulled. Most get pulled downwind and you are looking to tach or edge slightly into the wind with just enough power to go and when a puff hits you let off the power in your wing. This is more of a skill thing and just takes time flying your wing over and over. It will come stay at it... just takes repetition.....

    thanks for the awesome video. My problem is that when I come up to foil, the board leens toe or heel side really quickly, is it because I'm not standing straight enough?

    • @DamienLeroyYouTube
      @DamienLeroyYouTube  Год назад

      Hard to say without seeing it, but my guess would be that you are going downwind once you get up on foil, and the board becomes unstable side to side because you have no pressure in the wing. Check out this video of the most common beginner mistakes: ruclips.net/video/EuCoPsuEwZE/видео.html
      Hope this helps!

    Really great videos that i keep coming back to over and over again. So informative and insparatioal. I'm getting up on foil and then to stop the climb i let some of the power out but watching videos of others they don't seem. Are they moving there body weight forward and back to adjust pressure on the wing and hence stay level?

    • @DamienLeroyYouTube
      @DamienLeroyYouTube  3 года назад

      Thank you friend! I believe the motion you speak about body weight forward and back helps as well as letting power out in the wing as well. Both work. It's more of a hip movement, forward and or back. Hope it helps!

    Hi Damien, great videos and very helpful. Thanks for your efforts. Just had my third wing foil session and already came nicely up on foil. However have been struggeling with a loooot of nose dives. So I am up on foil, picking up speed, heading upwind (maybe too much) and the board nose suddenly dives down and makes me to make a superman forward. What can be the reason for that happening?

    • @steriospeaker
      @steriospeaker 2 года назад

      Possibly your foil is breaching the surface, and loosing all its lift. If that’s the case, just ride it lower.

    Hi. I am a kite surfer for over 10 years now. I want to try wing foiling. What size foil and wing should I get? Winds here in North Queensland are averaging 15-22knots. I weigh around 84k (male)

  • @lindaknight6047

    Just started watching videos to learn to wing foil and yours are by far our fav. We are long time windsurfers, never kited. Do you think it is better to get the feel of the foil on a windsurfer since we already know windsurfing so well, and then progress to wing handling? Or just go straight to the wing? Also, I subscribed to your channel, but where are the links for all the other videos. They aren't showing up in my youtube list when I search your name. Thanks!!

      The most stable and easy wing to learn on is the 300 from LIFT or you can do the 250 v2 surf with the 48back on both.... 300 is the most stable and the 250 will have more performance as you get better.... Hope that helps...
