The misery of this map is most felt when not pistol starting. Trying an Episode 4 single segment on Nightmare was sooooo hard because of the map before this one crippling the beginning of this map. Oof. Memories.
Even on UV it was already hard af for me since I don't play with pistol start at all. I got lucky I cleared E4M1 with like 50% health and still had to retry E4M2 a few times before clearing it. I don't think I'll ever replay it nor trying to do the whole episode in one segment.
My first time trying this map on ultra violence, I died in, maybe 6 seconds? And proceeded to attempt it again maybe 7 times before beating it. Gotta be one of my favorites of the official stuff.
You could try (might be very tricky) standing in front of the exit on E4M1 to get pushed into the exit and killed by a monster, so that you pistol start E4M2 with 100 per cent health.
I still remember buying Ultimate Doom when it was released. I'd loved the first 3 levels of the original Doom and considered myself a pretty decent player. Then I embarked on level 4 and I couldn't believe the difficulty spike. It seriously took down my trousers and spanked me hard. To watch you sailing through E4M2 on Nightmare is a revelation. Wow!
@@HazmanFTW UDoom uses a doom. exe v1. 9 that came out after Doom II just recompiled to recognize the new UDoom iwad and be able to display the 4th episode. Limbo, lust, all gone. With gluttony soon to follow. Your kind knows nothing but hunger. Purge all life of the upper layers and yet remain unsatiated. As to you. You've take everything from me machine. And all that remain is PERFECT. HATRED.
3:07 beautiful sequence. Glad the map had some surprises for you, it may not be the hardest but it's a great spectacle seeing someone play it like this
What an incredible run! You even went for the chainsaw even if you were technically already at 22/22 items, what a mad lad. It really shows that you're enjoying yourself a lot in this play through
Without the pressure of the starting cacos, not having to kill all the barons, and having a lot of shotguns from respawning enemies makes this map easier, however as you said lol, the difficulty just shifts elsewhere. Nice work, I love seeing a new method to defeat this perfect hatred!
The baron was present in that area around 1:20 once you go through the lava staircase up to the beginning area, there's a line def that allows them to pass into that hallway (probably the same one that opens once you get back to the main area. Great video!
Pressing the switch from below, and BFG shot on the caco while jumping into the cavern... nice strats, im really impressed... Ngl, i honestly expected more deaths on this map, but seeing how well you did it shows how great of a player you are. Well done, sir.
Technically, chainsaws on NW are mostly for the ones in the secret areas, but is good you still follow the passion, nicely executed indeed P.S. 169% of the kills. Just another tribute to BMD
Next level Doom IQ. I usually lock in with Decino's way of handling things, but this time I was constantly jolted out of my comfort zone. Brilliant vid
It's interesting that for UV Max and UV Fast the two tricks did make the map more easier, but then as a challenge speedrunners sometimes did it the slower way without the tricks I didn't know about the softlock, I've never encountered it personally
Excellent job! It's super impressive to beat this map on Nightmare but I'm even more impressed that you battled through the Chainsaw area too. This map is brutal but one of my favorites.
Yay, Perfect Hatred, my favourite map in the entire Doom 1! As a child, I called it "Evening Adventure", probably because it's kinda dark compared to other Episode 4 missions. And I am additionally happy that decino visited all areas of the map, thanks to the chainsaw!
Very technical run, you love to see it! Nightmare runs sorta become speedruns by necessity, and I love seeing the strategies (and sometimes glitches) used to pick apart levels in any game, and especially Doom. And yeah, I know this isn't a full speedrun because you need to get all the items and *fart noise* "tools", but you can't really dawdle unless you're corralling monsters and other such strategies. Very nice!
Thy Flesh Consumed is a great set of maps. The first 2 are my favorites. The only thing I can think I have an issue is that I had to be an adult to play them. But look at you Decino. Blazing through the episode like it's nothing. Good run dude.
That was an awesome job on your skills with your timings on jumping places to places. Yes getting Chainsaw is all the more challenge but I'm glad you beated this map in Nightmare Mode. Next one might entertain me as that map is really good. Nicely job! 👍
An absolute banger of a map. I love the verticality. It is a challenging start but honestly, the second you get a plasma rife and can prep for the Baron trap that comes with it this map becomes easy and it's loaded with cells for the onslaught ahead. It also has a nice linear concept (go left to go right to go up) but there are so many cool tricks and skips with this map that if you're a veteran, you realize this map is for you. It's not nearly dickish like Plutonia or Sigil become, and it's not a Hand or teleport puzzle so it is such a refreshing map.
I'm replaying this for the first time in a long time and i forgot that the wall opened up at around 1:45. I was wondering why i was missing 100% items. Thanks for this vid. Also Nightmare! difficulty is just insane! Props man!
Right? I would rather pistol start this level rather than carrying my shit over on 20%. E4M6 is one I'll never touch again. If we're talking about official Doom levels, No Rest for the Living's Vivisection is absolutely agony - that, Inferno of Blood and Baron's Banquet. I would rather chop my dick off rather than those levels on Nightmare again.
3:14 - I like the two blind jumps combined with the BFG shot. I guess that next maps will be a cakewalk until E4M6. Love this entire episode and the irregular difficulty curve.
I remember the first time I played E4M2. Had >20 Hp and nothing but 2 pistol bullets to my name. I pulled through after a number of attempts, but damn, it was a rough experience. Ever since then I've always had a bit of a grudge against this level, so seeing you fly through here on nightmare no less, definitely felt cathartic. Good show decino, good show indeed.
Now I'm beginning to remember the difficulty of Episode 4. I don't think I've played it in 15+ years at this point. Amazing to see someone mop this level up in nightmare considering how many times I died in UV on it.
decino: 7:21 also need the armor. Then: 7:25 don't need the armor. I already knew what was coming. On a serious note, that prefire at 4:05 was really good. I had to rewind a couple of times to watch it again.
I find it ironic and hilarious that this map, the hardest map on Ultimate Doom, is actually easier when you pistol start. Usually when I get here, I'm beat up to heck, and low on ammo. I also find it kinda liberating to pistol start every map, because I often stick to one weapon all the time, but when you lose them anyway, you become more trigger happy.
I'm playing this map now on UV and man it's brutal, it's so stingy on ammo and so claustrophobic. It's in E4 that you really start to appreciate the super shotgun.
OK I never knew you could get the bfg that way admittedly I didn't know about the secret exit untill many year's later always liked this level though originally it gave me hassle when I was still new to doom. Cheers for the upload decino
This is the ONLY map in my UV+PS+FM playthrough where I needed to save the game(yet once). But, seriously, how in HECK one is supposed to figure out those cross-jumps and secrets on a blind run??? And Romero designed it in SIX HOURS!! He's a frickin' twisted evil genius! No wonder a mind like his and Carmack's conceived a timeless masterpiece like Doom!
E4M2 this map is challenging of course but not as crazy difficult like E4M1 in my opinion if you know what you're doing and you prioritize certain enemies especially those cacodemos and Barons as to find a secret exit is pretty easy the only hard part is to get there because it has a timer so you have to do it quicker. Overall pretty fun level if you know the strategy and prioritize certain enemies that's all.
This is all fine and good, but as a guy who has played this game in 93 when you had to quit Windows, and through DOS type CD C:/doom followed by doom to run Doom, a valid run would be to do a no glitch run, with all kills being kill the demons that you would originally encounter at least once. Otherwise, you could just kill one weak demon consistently and evade everything else. But.... Like the Nightmare quote says, "not even remotely fair" means, all is valid.... So, Salute to a good run!
Can you believe that John Romero actually made the 2 HARDEST maps in episode 4 (this one and Against Thee Wickedly) and the others were made by different people?

E4 uses some of the Doom II engine features like keyed switches the early releases of Doom didn't support keys locking anything but doors.
