The best part is that Disney shut this project down and Netflix saved it. And now it’s an Oscar nominee over Disney’s 100-year short and their newest film “Wish”.
Reviewers say that Todd wasn't necessary but he is, everytime something makes me angry in the movie, such as a betrayal, Todd appears and i can redirect all my anger to him Because he's just so extremely punchable
Also, I think seeing Todd leaving flowers and then kind of looking at the two guys and is clearly embarrassed to be seen was sweet. We know he’s not doing it to look good to other ppl, and he’s an example of a person who had his mind changed after Nimona and Ballister’s moment (contrasting the fact the director refused to change).
If the director is the face of the institutionalized discrimination, then I think Todd is for sure the face of that complicity. He loves the system, just the way it is oh, and I think that's an important part in the movie
Regarding the ending and Nimona "dying". I really like that ending, as Nimona is not only a character, but also a metaphor for being trans or different from society's norms in general. So her dying shows that sometimes the damage hateful people like the Director do is irreversible and tragic and is also a commentary on how we as a society have a much higher standards for accepting different people then for everyone else. I mean, Nimona literally had to sacrifice herself to just be accepted. And her coming back symbolises that despite the damage, hardships and injustices there will always be different and unique people, because being different is natural and u can't destroy nature (unless u kill everyone, but that is probably smth nobody should want).
And plus, she turned into a Phoenix and "dies". She turns into ash and reforms. I feel like that was a nice hint that Nimona isn't dead, she just needs to rebuild
I love that we see Ambrosius ask the Director if she switched out Ballister's sword, even though Ballister never got to tell him about that. It's a clue that "Ambrosius" is really Nimona in disguise, but nobody I know of has ever caught it on first viewing. It's a brilliant touch from the screenwriters. Also, that round drawing at the top of the memorial wall at 36:54 is straight up how ND Stevenson drew Nimona in the comics and I absolutely thrilled they included his art somewhere in the movie.
"Nimona, please kill everyone... Except for your sad boss". But that was a great movie. You really can feel the LGBT themes in the story and the amount of care and representation done is simply extraoridinary. It makes me happy knowing that this film was produced in spite of it's unlucky production. And thank you for reacting to this!
Yes! So many people end the movie and are like "But what is her real origin? Where didshe come from?" and, like, the answer is she's Nimona, the rest ain't your business. Anyway, my take on it is that Nimona DID die, but because she died a fiery death as a phoenix she got to come back, though it may have taken some time and who knows if she's exactly the same. Ballister getting on the sword? I figure he punched out a guard and stole their hoverbike, which he didn't even bother to park, just jumped off it and let the thing crash all action movie like. I get the squire not doing anything with the video after the queen's death. The director seems to be the highest legal authority under the monarch and with the queen dead by her hand, revealing that video is a possible death sentence and that guy, not exactly hero material. Also, yes. Everything is Todd's fault.
and I'm convinced she knew she _would_ come back, because she told Ballister so right before she shifted into the phoenix ("Hey boss? Be right back; I'm gonna go break stuff.").
she's a changeling of some kind, fey origin most likely had her "birth family" abandon her in the well as was common for unwanted children so she didn't learn how to "blend" in i.e. pink animals and why her human forms looks decant.
Yeah, the squire was shown to cower when the director came in, so it’s understandable why he wouldn’t do anything with the evidence. He likely also feels a lot of guilt cuz he probably just went “oh it’s ok that the sword was changed, the director isn’t a bad guy. It’s prob nothing” until the explosion. Dude would have to be so guilty that he didn’t just say what the director did immediately.
Something you may not have noticed is that they inverted the typical color scheme. Good guys have darker shades and lighting bad guys have bright colors and lighting. This is different than the usual good guy in bright bad guys in shadow.
In a deleted plot point that has concept art, Nimona looks like a red 6-legged-axolotl with a rooster-like-tail (her older monster design had it too). It kinda hints at her ability to regenerate as axolotls have the ability to regrow limbs but... This current version honestly helps send the message that she is Nimona and not just some animal or monster
"Did she die?" Yeah. We see she can take the powers of stuff she transforms into, like fire breath from a dragon. At the end she turns into a phoenix, so she gets killed but is reborn from the ashes.
Dude you are HILARIOUS!! YOUR EDITING IS SO GOOD AND SO FUNNY This video brought me so much joy and it really stands out from other reaction videos, I'm so happy I clicked on it ^^
Yes!!! I've been a fan of Nimona for upwards of 10 years now - I was reading the webcomic as it was posted - and I was so excited when the movie got picked back up. I think the end result was phenomenal, and I'm glad to see one of my favorite RUclipsrs feels the same way
Oh my ever loving God! I have watched this movie a handful of times and watched several reaction videos. You are the FIRST person I've seen point out Nimonas shape shifted rat form entering the prison!!! Haven't finished your reaction yet, but had to drop kudos at your observation skills
At one point you said something about "gays being profitable" (I know you worded it differently). I just wanted to say that THE reason the movie got cancelled by Di$ney IS the fact that it had queer lead squad. Because yea, they are willing to include a gay character as long as it's a background character that can easily be turned into something cishet so the movie can be distributed to countries like China or Russia. And they were furious that the lead character is genderqueer. SO they kept delaying the movie back and forth until they finally cancelled it. And then very, very awesome studios came by to save this masterpiece. This is the movie that "refused to die" and I love that the history of the movie about queer people represents queer people so well. No matter how hard the cishets will try, we will always exist. If not as humans, we'll exist in animals or plants, or anything else. I loved that we got to live in the universe that got to experience this movie and its' production. Absolutely astounding. Top tier graphic designing, animation, style and especially writing. The best screenplay I've seen in my entire life. And I'd be absolutely down for a whole series. On the other hand it turned out that Nimona was the movie people craved for so when it got published and people went absolutely ape shit over it Di$ney realised what they'd lost. SERVES YOU RIGHT, YOU PHOBIC RAT. In conclusion, the movie is not only an amazing production history, breathtaking screenplay, beautiful visuals and everything we adored about it. It is also THE GUT PUNCH OF THE YEAR.
oh my GOD the knocking at 6:43 sounded so realistic in my headphones that i thought somehow someone was knocking that hard on a wall behind me on the 2nd floor 0.0
I love the juxtaposition of the medieval aesthetic and traditions with the futuristic tech, not just because it's cool, but as a metaphor for the medieval mindset some people are locked in to
Todd is basically what happens if you keep all of Launchpad's personality traits except for being a nice guy. Launchpad ain't all there and he's not good at much, but he means well, and that makes up for a lot. Todd does not mean well.
36:45 “Why did I sound so antagonistic when I said that?” That’s a good example of you “drawing your sword”, like Bal did just before the knights burst in and Nimona ran to the well. It was involuntary, and likely a result of that you’ve been taught. But the homophobia, however small, is still there. That doesn’t mean you’re a bad person, like Bal wasn’t, but it just means you’ve got some growing to do… like Bal did 😊
So I have a theory, and even if it was not the case since it was not explained in the movie (don't know if it was in the original story) at least in my headcanon it is. I think that when Gloreth drove Nimona away from the village she did it mainly for Nimona's sake. While it may have been partly to keep her parents and the village from further harm, I believe that the main driving reason was that Gloreth didn't want her friend to get hurt. My main reason for this theory goes back to the moment when she said those words that we heard quoted at the beginning of the movie. Gloreth could have picked up anything when she told Nimona to "go back to the shadows": a hoe, a spade, a pitchfork, anything that she could hold leveled at her. Instead Gloreth holds up a toy wooden sword. She was surely old enough to not think that its flat, blunted edges would actually cause any real harm to Nimona, even if she remained in her human transformation, and that's the point. When Gloreth told Nimona to "Go back to the shadows from whence you came" what I think she was really meaning in her heart was "Go back to the shadows where you'll be safe." As for the wall that Gloreth purportedly was behind, assuming that part of the legend was true I think that rather than it being to keep Nimona out it was to keep the people in. Even the rule prohibiting travel outside the wall was meant to keep people from forming hunting parties to hunt town and kill "the monster", and thus the establishment and enforcement of it further worked to keep Nimona safe. As for why Gloreth didn't go out to find Nimona to tell her that it wasn't true, that she didn't mean what she said, I believe that was two-fold. First, if she was caught doing so then the villagers would lose all trust in what she said, they would surely go trying to kill "the monster" no matter what reason she gave tp not do so. She had already gotten a taste of that when her parents argued that Nimona wasn't her friend but a monster, so she couldn't risk that happening again and lose what ability she had to stop them. The other reason why was that she likely blamed herself for Nimona getting hurt in the first place. She and Nimona simply raced into the village without considering what the reactions of the others would be. That led to the village catching fire and Nimona getting attacked. While Gloreth might have been old enough to not believe that the toy sword would have caused Nimona any harm should she refuse to leave, I think that she was still of the age to take the blame onto herself despite it being the fault of the close-minded adults. As far as Gloreth was concerned it would be safer for Nimona if they kept their distance from then on, despite how much it would hurt them both inside. So that's my theory concerning the real truth behind the legend, that everything that she did was all meant to keep Nimona safe from the adults that didn't even try to understand her. Whether that's what the author intended those events to mean or not I like to think that it is meant to be up to reader/viewer interpretation and that's mine & I hope that I'm not alone, but even if i am that's fine.
Ironically this is exactly the kind of thing that happens with trans women... getting bullied and the target of violence again and again but if they show any anger (not even actually harming someone, just anger) they get told they're threatening and they shouldn't be surprised if people react negatively to them or are afraid of them. Except the fear and violence was there before any kind of antagonistic behaviour. So yes Nimona does get to feel betrayed that balister thought she would actually hurt him, and that he would react the way he was trained to fight against monsters, that he would still see her as a monster. Especially with all the symbolic nature of the sword here, it's not just a sword it's a symbol of hatred and fear throughout the movie and bal even decided to throw away the sword earlier in the movie, the shock isn't just that he draws the sword it's that he even had one in the first place, because symbolically it's the betrayal you feel when someone you trusted, you thought was an ally (of you as a person part of a marginalized group), still has some prejudice and bigotry going on, and that usually hurts way more when it comes from someone you thought was safe. There would be way more to say (notably about trauma and the way the sword is a trigger) but point is, the reaction is absolutely warranted here. And again she doesn't react to the betrayal with violence, she just loses the will to live when she loses her only support. She doesn't even harm anyone except herself (she only lashes out at symbols of oppressions)
The reason this almost didn't get made is because Disney bought the studio, and Disney _refuses_ to touch anything about homosexuality or gender identity. Not because of the U.S. audiences, either, or at least not _solely_ them. Disney is trying to appease places like China because they're _such_ a big market that being able to sell things in China has the potential to bring in _so_ much money. As such, they try to avoid anything that could offend them... or much of anyone, really. They even help out with casual racism in other countries (again, mainly China), so have fewer black people in starring roles and tend to push them to the back in localization (in the Chinese release of the Star Wars sequels, Finn wasn't on the posters... at all... and seems to be largely seen as a minor character). And it's not, mainly, the movies they care about. It's _all the other_ merchandise that worries them. Selling Star Wars toys in China, India, and other large, homophobic and racist Asian markets is a massive driver of these movies. On the flip side, because of the people who _pay for_ the movies (which isn't Disney, it's the investors in their company), they're forced to make Mary-Sue female protagonists (again, Star Wars sequels with Rey) and force in diversity. As for this movie, personally, I wish that _either_ Nimona surviving was smarter (ie, she flew a car into it or something and jumped out first, or else did something intelligent), because as it is it means the weapon was never really a threat to her in the _first_ place, or else that she'd _stayed_ dead. With her coming back the way she did, it cheapens the sacrifice involved, cheapens what she did. If she'd stayed dead, I'd have had Balister give the eulogy during a national day of mourning, and paraphrase the opening lines. "We cannot fix the wrongs of the past, we can only move forward for the future. The darkness didn't come from outside, it came from within... until one that _we_ rejected lifted that darkness to give us a chance at a life of light and hope. But if you want a happily ever after, you can _never_ let your guard down because the monsters... are always in here" (hand over heart). Then have two or three others in the massive crowd show they're like Nimona, too, that these beings have _always_ been around, hiding, not causing trouble for _anyone._ I think, in a way, that could have been even more powerful, _and_ show that this isn't some 'new thing', but that it's always _been_ here, it's just a difference of _acceptance,_ not existence. Have a nice day!
Has someone said that the characters shape and coloration and such was based on the voice actors? I got that from some other video, never said, but easily seen.
Maybe Annapurna pictures can purchase the copyrights of the original animation studio and bring blue sky studios back in business just like how dreamworks was first owned by paramount then 20 century fox and now Universal blue sky can do the same thing and we should let Annapurna know and if they don't agree at first we'll convince them by saying think about it!😊
"Nimona, please kill everyone... Except for your sad boss". But that was a great movie. I know this is probably completely unrelated but Blier watching Nimona and like 2 weeks later sharing that they're genderfluid is peak comedy to me.
Nimona is such an unapologetically queer movie and i am so happy that it exists

OMFG I never noticed Nimona as a rat scurrying towards Bal's cell as the Director was walking out before
Balister looks like a sad cat for half of the movie
Having read the comic and seeing the movie designs for the first time I thought "oh good, Ballister looks suitably like a sad tired gay man"
lol he's always doing the puppy eyes emoji for some reason 🥺

The movie is a lot more on the nose than the book, but it was still a great watch.
So I have a theory, and even if it was not the case since it was not explained in the movie (don't know if it was in the original story) at least in my headcanon it is. I think that when Gloreth drove Nimona away from the village she did it mainly for Nimona's sake. I'm sorry, but you don't get to feel betrayed that someone pulls a sword on you when you turn into a giant ogre and threaten them angrily.
Ironically this is exactly the kind of thing that happens with trans women... getting bullied and the target of violence again and again but if they show any anger (not even actually harming someone, just anger) they get told they're threatening and they shouldn't be surprised if people react negatively to them or are afraid of them.

The director stabbed her with a sword and it's shown that while she could be hurt it's really hard to actually kill her.

You really can feel the LGBT themes in the story and the amount of care and representation done is simply extraoridinary. It makes me happy knowing that this film was produced in spite of it's unlucky production.
And thank you for reacting to this!
