Thank you for posting this! Have not seen this since 72 while watching NHL on CBS with my dad. This is also seen in the movie "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" as Snoopy imagines he is playing hockey at Rockefeller Center in NYC👍
Yes, I also remember this opening theme growing up. These two teams played a great series in ‘72 with the Blues winning it in 7. It was THE BEST! I would give anything if NBC could just play this before this year’s SC as long as no copyright laws are violated. Maybe JB could arrange a football version of this on CBS for opening day on Sunday? Simply a brilliant piece of work!!
I remember this opening as a kid in early 1970's Now, someone who used work at a local CBS Station has a copy of the 1970 Stanley Cup final Game 4 full game + overtime when Bobby Orr score and flew in the air afterwards to win the game?? !!
With play by play by the great Dan Kelly, whom I heard every night for 19 years with the Blues. Dan's sidekick and analyst for CBS's hockey coverage was Bill Mazer the first 2 seasons, then Jim Gordon.

cbs gave up hockey after the 1972-1973 season, nbc picked it up for one season in 1973-74 and then hockey went to oblivion. In fact, 1975 finals between buffalo and philadelphia aired on pbs, channel 13 in the ny market. The league would finally get a syndication deal and channel 9 in ny would air monday night games for a while. Other than cable tv deals with sportschannel america , espn, the next "free" tv deal would be with fox in 1995 following the rangers stanley cup win in 1994!
NBC did televise the 75 finals just not the last game which I believe was a Tuesday night. You can tell which games aired on NBC because the Sabres had their names sewn on the back of the jerseys.
On July 3, 2023, ESPN will opt out of the remaining 5 years of a 7-year deal to hold half of its media rights to the NHL and sell the remainder to CBS Sports, so beginning in the 2023-24 season, CBS Sports will be the 1st rightsholder to air games on CBS and CBS Sports Network and over-the-top rights to all of telecasts for Paramount+, while Warner Bros. Discovery Sports (formerly Turner Sports) will continue serving as the 2nd rightsholder, with options to air games on TNT and/or TBS and over-the-top rights to all of its telecasts for HBO Max.
CBS would reuse this music for their Triple Crown coverage. Also, that voiceover sounds like Jim Gordon, who did play by play for the Rangers in the 70s.
No, but I remember CBS using this music in a fall promo (with vocals) around 1970-71. Voice over was definitely by Jim Gordon, New York Rangers announcer, and second banana here to Dan Kelly.
I know CBS also used this theme when they televised ABA playoffs and Triple-Crown races in the early 70s. Each had a separate voice lead-in to the actual music. Loved it! Had numerous reel-to-reel recordings . . .
@@gordonfenderssonjr.8703 I also remember it being used in CBS's fall promo. Can't remember all the words, but some of it went like this (vaguely) "...this fall, CBS has it all."

I found a similar-if not the same-tune on a Hot Butter (remember "Popcorn"?) album called "Sounds-Simple" credited to Teo Macero. The CBS version is way better, though.
Awesome childhood memory. Always remembered game 7 Stanley Cup finals Montreal versus Chicago in 1971.
MEMORIES!! Dan Kelly!!
As a hockey fan for over 50 years I remember this theme song foundly.
I have been looking for this intro forever!!!

Awesome! Brings back so many memories as a kid. That is the great Rangers announcer Jim Gordon with the beginning voice-over.
Oh man! For years my brother and I had just the audio to this opening. Thanks so much for posting this. Just as I remember it!
Inferior to HNIC .
Gordon was also the radio voice of the NY Football Giants (called two Super Bowls on WNEW AM 1130)
I still remember that CBS , NHL theme song from when I was a kid. Thanks for posting!

Thank you for finding this theme from my childhood!

I remember this intro. Watched Sunday afternoons on WCAX Burlington, VT ...thanks for posting!
What a classic rock song
I remember that intro had a jazzy theme to it. Also that music was used for the 70-71 primetime shows.
See, kids, the NHL hasn’t always been on NBC or ESPN (or even Fox with that (expletive) glowing puck)
Or ABC.
yeah, they know.
To be fair, that was before HD television. That said, Canadians thought it was kind of funny.
