This is a creepy and manipulative way to canvass.

How so? I'd wager compared to the alternatives we see time and again it has far *less* manipulation at play, so long as we include our own psychological quirks of cognitive dissonance and the like as a manipulation of the conscious by the subconscious. If you can engage me and just simply by asking the right questions that gets me thinking about whatever it is I believe, lead me to decide on my own in the process of trying to give you an answer, that maybe this isn't as clear as I thought it was prior to the conversation, haven't you arguably served to help free me from a kind of internal manipulation?
Seeing just how divided and sequestered off into echo chambers and information silos so much of our society has become... Well that's the real creepy issue to me. Anything that holds a snowballs change in hell at breaking that division down seems, contrary to "creepy and manipulative," like very much needed tools for consideration in knocking down what "creepy and manipulative" forces are already clearly at work chipping away at our society as it is.
