- “Dad, this is not a normal breed.” Not sure if you’d still remember the comment Mina made when she was trying to play The Ventures version of “El Bimbo”. This time, her comment was, “the song is for aliens.” (meaning human beings don’t play songs like this). We never really listened much to “Caravan” in the past, as the song sounded a bit jazzy (and Mina says blues too, and I think it’s a mixed of country music as well, especially in some of the guitar solo parts. But after “El Bimbo”, Mina said she was ready to take on another challenge. I remember I once read from the Squier Surf forum that I frequent , that very friendly members say “Caravan” is believed to be a more difficult surf songs. Some even said it is the most difficult one. I never paid much attention to it until recently, since Mina said she was ready for a new challenge. So ladies and gentlemen, here we present to you “Caravan” (cover)! Not only the song is challenging, this song grows on you. I could be wrong, and to me, I am not surprised because "Caravan" has surf, blues, country and jazz DNA in it. Oh, Mina says it has alien DNA in it too! 😝😝
Mina was hoping to use a guitar similar to the one Nokie Edwards used in 1984 in their live concerts. I suggested using our Les Paul, as it is similar to the one Nokie sometimes used in the 80s. Turned out the guitar he used was a Tony Hunt custom-made guitar for Nokie only, with a trem system similar to Bigsby and with humbucker pickups. It sort of looked like a DC Les Paul (later on I found out the shape of the guitar is called “Horseshoe”). But, Mina strongly refused to use the Les Paul as she thought it’s just not for surf tunes and the Ventures members never really used a Les Paul. Alright, my hat goes off for her as she seems persistence and serious enough when it comes to playing surf music and the Ventures songs.
Again, our lead guitarist here was not trained at Juilliard, I’d say she did a Nokie Edwards inspired version of "Caravan" this time. McGee actually seems to have played more of this song but Mina thought this particular 1984 version is quite cool and we decided to make a cover of it based on their live performance. I was talking to our drummer long Tall Jennifer about representing us as I told her I met a person who wants to invite us to play at an iconic local tourist attraction like the pros. I hope we will be ready to play this song as I must say, it is pretty stunning.
Sorry, we skipped the majority of the section where Mel Taylor played the awesome drums solo (7 minutes long), which his performance was at an unprecedented level, especially in his days.

This is a special song. We didn't know what kind of song it was until people told us it's jazz standard. We just thought it seemed real cool so we wanted to try it. I must say it's quite hard. El Bimbo was the #1 hardest and this is probably the #2 hardest. So after these two songs, all songs became easier. We plan to play it live one day soon. Our bassist is a jazz player so it should be okay for her. When our drummer is ready, than we'll try. You have noticed! I used very little drive and the guitar DID sound very clean. I started using less and less drive after playing this song. 😁😁😁

I just got back an hour ago from a business trip to San Diego, Oceanside, and LA. It's been a while since I've seen the palm trees and beach that inspired the Surf Rock genre. When you see it in person, then you understand the music.
Great job on such a high level of technical difficulty. It's hard, but good to challenge yourself by stepping above your comfort level: it's the only way to grow.
The ride of the song? Hmm. Not a bad choice to fit into the modern beach scene. I don't have any emotional attachment to the car, it doesn't really interest me, but it would certainly not look out of place cruising down California State Route 5 through Oceanside with the Pacific ocean on one side of the road and the beach houses/ hills on the other.
Difficult song man, but very well said. It's the only way to grow. So San Diego eh? Nice...I bet it's warm there too. Hope I can bring Mina there one day... ;-) The Bentayga, i have no emotional attachment to it neither, and it'd be a "foot car". It's the ride of the song because the Indian summer won't go away, and the Bentayga would have A/C powerful enough....plus, it's the depreciation in value that makes it extremely appealing. Like I said, you get a lot of the car for the money. ;-)
Mina plays really virtuoso. And of course dad too 🙂. Great performance.
Your words are too kind. But i must admit, it's not an easy song. We wouldn't even think of playing this song in the past. So, we are happy she can now handle it. ;-)

Next progression for her is to play jazz. She had the talent ti meet the challenge. As she gets more comfortable with the fret board....she'll definitely be a great one.
thank you!!! good suggestion. I have asked her to do so. I believe jazz could truly unlock her music understanding even more. We have tried and played 2 jazz songs on stage together with one of the top jazz sax player in town for 40 years, who is my old English teacher. They were supposed to very simple songs, but to us, jazz is like something totally from Mars. hahaha....

そういう考え方をお持ちで、とても親切ですね。ベンチャーズは私のギターの先生でした。父以外にギターの先生はいませんが、ベンチャーズの真似をして学ぶ方法を父から教わりました。良い練習になると思います。父はよく、今はギターの弾き方を学ぶのがずっと簡単だと言っていました。昔は楽譜もギターのタブ譜もビデオもなく、ラジオを聴いたり、カセットテープに曲を録音して聴いたりするしかなかったからです。ギターの弾き方を学びたい人は幸運だ、インターネットのリソースがあればずっと簡単に学べる、と言っていました。
こう考えてみてください。ベンチャーズは消え去ったわけではありません！彼らの素晴らしい音楽は今も存在し、私を含めた新しい世代に受け継がれています。そして、これらの巨匠たちは遺産を残しました！

少なくとも私（古いお父さん）は同意します。意外なことに、ミナはそれほど難しいことではないと言いました。彼女は、エル・ビンボが一番大変だったと言いました。ミナちゃんはヘヴィメタルのギターを弾いていて、運指もどこか似ているので、彼女にとっては最速の曲ではないかもしれません。でももちろん彼女はCaravanをクリーンな音で演奏していたので、私には簡単ではありませんでした。

@@俊-o6o 優しい言葉をありがとう。最近、彼女の父親は彼女にあまり教えていません。ミナちゃんもメタル系の曲が多いです。 9歳の時、彼女は独学でギターを弾くことを学び始めました。彼女の父親は彼女に学び方を教え、現在は教師ではなくコーチおよびアドバイザーになっています。私たちが演奏する曲のほとんどは楽譜がないので、一緒に勉強します。メタルの曲の弾き方を知っていると、Caravan のような複雑な曲を弾くのにとても役立ちます。エル・ビンボに関しては、楽譜がありませんでした。少し難しかったですが、運指の部分が分かりにくかったです。

コメントありがとうございます。これがカバーと呼ばれる理由だと思います。 ;-) そうです、お気に入りの 80 年代の映画の吹き替えです。この若いギタリストが学習のこの段階でさらに探求するのに模倣が役立つのであれば、このように試しても大丈夫だと思います。気分を害しすぎないでください。Nokie Edwards のギターサウンドは98%以上カバーできたと思いますが、2つの音源はギターのピックアップが違うため別物です
