The National Anthem is simple. You stick to the original and sing all the right notes with your voice. Your voice makes it special.

You do know the tune was originally an irish drinking song right? I agree you don't have to add the flourishes, it can be good without it, but not on the "meant to be yours" part. it wasn't our either. we stole it from another composer before they could do anything about it

Yes, I wish her and her recovery well. But honestly, who picks these singers? #1, I have never heard of her, and #2, There are so many quality singers out there that deserve to be on that stage and would consider it a true honor. Someone should have recognized that she was inebriated. In that case, the audience could have done a better job.
She's a good singer and has some great songs - I can't imagine how drunk I would have to get to sing like this though. Must've been throwin em back like no one's business before this gig or something it's crazy 😂

Brad, if Whitney Houston can do it...a 4 time Grammy nominated singer can do it. She can't sing...she might be able if she listened and practiced but she's a songwriter and plays a little piano. She has performed a great service to the entire country by giving us a huge laugh. I listened a few times just so I could fall on the floor laughing. Now...as for your voice...it's like melting butter...sounds beautiful! Maybe you should sing the anthem!

I think the only rationale for accepting the " I was drunk " excuse is it explains why she acted like she was nailing it during and right after the performance. It doesn't explain the off key and out of pitch vocals.

I don’t think “drunk” explains this. As a vocalist myself, the only things I can think of that could explain this bad performance is she couldn’t hear that she was not hitting a single note correctly because of her sound equipment (or couldn’t “feel” she was because she isn’t a trained singer) … or she can’t sing(or can barely sing). I’ve heard plenty of “drunk off their ass” professional singers before and none of them have ever been anywhere close to this bad. She sounded like a drunk person who couldn’t sing at all to begin with.
I would also say that sometimes they run vocals through a tuner in production and that may have made her sound even weirder. Might explain that weird vibrato lol

Exactly! I'm a decent vocalist and used to run karaoke at a bar. I frequently sang when I was blasted but I was never this pitchy and off key, nor were the other talented vocalists who were regulars. From years of observation, the most common effects of singing drunk are forgetting the words and timing being off. I've never seen it affect pitch to this extent.

@@user-hd8ej8yx9p Nahhhhh dude. I have played gigs with vocalists who have been all out wasted and they still did the job reasonably well and stayed on key a majority of the time. I also had a gig when I was younger at an outdoor festival where I got too excited about drinking with the bandmates. I was the vocalist and blacked out at least half the set. The next day they told me I did good (even though I didn't believe them), and when they showed me some footage, I was mostly in key.
This was more than her just being hammered. If anything, it sounded like the notes were out of her range with all the voice breaking during the transitions to the higher notes. Alcohol will dry up the vocal folds and make your technique a little sloppier, but I have never seen it completely ruin someone's ability to sing if they are a decent singer. Heck, I watched a dude hitting power metal high notes in key while sitting in a chair because he was too wasted to stand during his set lol. I'm just not buying the whole drunk thing. This was out of her vocal reach or something.

She did not slur or mix up the words, which I would think a drunk person might do. Could it be she is really not a very good singer (voice) and has gotten by with auto-tune and other digital magic that a good studio has access to.

I don't know what happened to her but this is the 4 time Grammy nominated Ingred Andress. While I'm not familiar with her, she has one song called "More Hearts than Mine" which I love 💕 I was both shocked & bummed out for her cuz I know she can do wayyyy better. Everyone has a bad moment. Unfortunately, everyone gets to see her error everywhere.

@@questtech7148 Yeahhh, alcohol has never made me sound like a dying whale haha.....And I have had some gigs where I got a bit too intoxicated before the set.
I'm sure she probably has some issues with alcohol....But it seems like more of a PR move to be like "Let's just say you were drunk. That will go over better than saying those notes were out of your vocal range and that you couldn't sing the song."

I'm rushing out to buy her record right now. I saw this live and I couldn't believe my ears could handle so much torture lol. My goodness, please people stick to the original National Anthem. Auto Tunes and AI can do magic for anyone without a voice so stay in the studio lol. The singers I admire had no Auto Tunes and can all perform amazingly live. Let's blame it on the alcohol come on man.

I believe she was drunk. I don't believe that was the only reason she sounded like she did. I don't think she has a very big range. To hit any high notes, I think she needs the help of electronics. Even listening to her live songs, she has a lot of waver in her lower notes and it doesn't sound intentional. It's crazy what autotune and other software can do to someone vocals.

First time I've ever watched one with my hand hovering over the mute button for when she spends time killing cats (I'm assuming, what else could make those sound?) and a careful stare at the screen to lipread if you have started talking and it's safe again to listen because my dear good lord in heaven. I’m only going off of her Tiny Desk Performance and a couple songs live in concert, while it was better than this, it was still very shaky singing for a Grammy nominated country singer. Sounded to me like a lot of the amateur local country singers from me area that play in bars and such, which in itself isn’t a bad thing, those people usually are awesome, that being said.. they aren’t being recommended for Grammys and playing huge festivals

I listened to another video of her performing live, and If you have a keen ear, you can tell she’s highly likely using live auto tuning. This goes without saying, that I’m sure there are plenty of singers that do so. However, her voice does not seem natural, but forced. Listening to this again now, I mean let’s be honest, it’s atrocious.

Well, this generation of singers have been aided by autotune forever and when they have to sing this is what you get- reality.
On another sour note - this was a poor song to have been chosen to be our national athem. A national athem should be a song that we can all sing. Not a three octive range melody that .02% of people can actually sing.
