Watching this from Los Angeles makes me want to come home!...i was lucky to see time team from the first series but i never saw these so i'm really happy to see this, all our best and thanks for sharing, we All miss Mick, Robin and the the crew... 👏🏻🌟🌿🇬🇧
This is a fantastic local history document. Thank you so very much for sharing this so we can see a forerunner of Time Team and learn a brilliant story. Hearing from the local ppl, the family etc, adds enormously :)
What a treasure that VHS copy has become, isn't it? Mick Aston worked his way through this investigation, enjoying his tea, while being offered all kinds of objects from the area he was studying in his unique way, with always an aureole around his head. May Mick Aston rest in peace and hopefully, he was allowed to keep that aureole 😉
What a wonderful video. Mick Aston was a wonderful person to listen to. He had a calmness about him, amongst the chaos of Time Team, which was lost when he passed away. Thank you for posting this. Such a shame there are no more available. I will go back to my Time Team binge watching now 😊😊
Thank you for this! I wasn't aware of Time Team till I saw it on RUclips a few years ago, and only just recently discovered that Mick predated that will his own series. 💗💗💗
Nice, RIP Mick. So this was done in 1997 according to the date in credits. According to IMDB 6 episodes were done - New Towns of the Middle Ages (1997) - The Avebury Landscape (1997) - Deserted Villages (1997) - The Church in the Field (1997) - The Severn Valley (1997) - In Search of Cheddar Man (1997)
LOL Mick showed up to Time Team in a crazy sweater to tweak producers who had complained about his dull outfits, but they loved it, so crazy sweaters became his trademark.
I have really enjoyed this video, Mick Aston seemed such a lovely knowledgeable person. I was so very sad when I read of his passing. Thank you for sharing
Wow - that farm, with its wealth in layers of history was worthy of a whole series! It certainly left me wanting more. Nevertheless, this was a lovely piece of film, complete with a nice cup of tea. I loved it.
Mick, even though he was an atheist, appreciated church and abbey architecture. To him the architecture spoke volumes about the people that worshiped at these places, and the builders that designed and built those marvelous structures. He was the archaeologist of all archaeologists.
I am from Illinois and I love Time Team and the specials. Farmer's in the U.S. would not use a license plate on their tractors. I drove several and did not see a single license plate.
I know we all miss Mick. He was such a mainstay in archaeology. He wanted people to understand that we are all one family, no matter what we choose to follow. I believe that is what his jumper represented. The rainbow representing all races combined, making a point that together ,look what we can accomplish. Even tho a rainbow has different colors, together it is spectacular. So are we.
I live in Maine called the pine tree state and the white pine cone is the state flower. My God I have never seen such a giant pine cone in my life! My parents had pine trees planted all around their property and they had big cones but not cones on steroids! :-)
seriously? It didn't look out of the ordinary to me. We have cones down here on the Gulf Coast that are just as large. I keep a few that the squirrels knock down and put them up in the wood shed in a milk crate to dry out and use them to tinder fires.
This series was filmed in '97. Three years AFTER Time Team started in '94. You can also tell from the whiteness of Mick's hair. It was not as white as this in the early TT episodes. 🤣🤣🤣
Its not difficult to see how this evolved into Time Team.Mick Astons enthusiasm and personality here in pure form, add Phil,Tony,Stuart etc watch the alchemy!
i've been lied to! I read that mick didn't start wearing the gaudy colors until after the pilot of Time Team, but here he is two years before! They must have meant the pilot for this show, not the other.
Wow, this is much more to my taste than Time Team, which I quite like. Professor Aston is a much more interesting man to listen to than Tony Robinson. My inner nerd is content to hear a professional relate a story.
Such a shame that Mick didn't get to see out 20yrs in Time Team. Feeling obliged to leave after the programme makers chased viewer ratings by bringing in some "Eye Candy". Something which backfired on them as nobody liked her. Killing Time Team off.
I'm sure he wouldn't have accepted it if he had. He was very anti-establishment, bit of an Anarchist........ that's why we love him. Fantastic, lovely, great man.
That's nice to know houselab, I know he left Time Team under a bit of a cloud, I'll have to read that.......when I've read the ten other books I've started and not finished yet! Thanks.
This is my first time seeing Mick's Time Traveler series. I read he started this series because he was frustrated with the way Time Team was presented by Tony and the producers. I now see the way Mick wanted archeology presented, serious knowledge and facts! As much as I love Time Team it's clear to see it was getting a little off course with the archeology and more on course with who was the center of attention to get viewers tuning in. There were people there that clearly didn't belong there. I can see why Mick quit Time Team at the end because, by that time, it was taken over and controlled by children playing silly games, and pushing the girl power movement, while losing focus of the archeology.
YES, he became fed up when TIME TEAM used its limited budget to hire more eye candy "presenters" instead of more professional archeologists. Too much show biz , not enough science. Recall Mick never played "dress up" in any of TIME TEAM'S "historical" skits . Mick was old school cool....
It really is a pleasure not to have Tony and his foolishness. He was so rude to John. Thank you for sharing this. How fortunate that family had the sense not to go charging in and plowing up the Roman villa. The mosaic is preserved for all to see.
He wasn't more frustrated with the way Time Team was presented by Tony and the producers that he worked 13 years with TT after this. The last seasons of TT was not as good, but up until Mick, Stewart, Helen, and Victor left it's great to watch.
@@Frank-mm2yp You are refering to Mary-Ann, who actually is a professional archeologist. Don't take it out on her, the production/casting/agent most likely didn't fully explain what her job would be.
I am familiar with coal stoves from my own family. But I was confused by the hinged covers on the stove when the tea was poured. Can someone explain what this is? Is this uniquely British?
That is called an aga (Swedish oven). They usually run on gas (propane) rather than wood or coal and are used for heating the hot water for the house as well as cooking so they are always on. The hot plate covers are there to conserve the heat rather than waste it by losing it to the atmosphere of the house, and to stop people from accidentally touching them as well. :-)
is there any evidence that fingerprints are genetically linked so that let's say if someone's AY promo R1a or whatever does that give you a certain type of fingerprint That would be interesting to see if there's any correlation between fingerprints and genetic identity based on why or X chromosomes. and if that's the case it may help determine gender by seeing a fingerprint. possibly I don't know if there's ever been any studies on that.

Sorry, this is the only episode I have. It was filmed at my family's farm so we had an old VHS copy I was able to upload.

Mick was one of a kind. I miss his wit, wisdom, incredible knowledge and rainbow jumpers.

leslie easton it really is the worst sweater! Lol, but I love it and him...
C4 told him to make Time Team more 'colourful' at the beginning and so he did! There was the rainbow Beanie as well
Actually was only 51 here !

A wonderful story, I did like Mike Aston so much more than Tony Robinson. A most interesting historical investigation. Thanks for sharing! 😊
