I've heard it described but never really saw it being used. Fantastic! In MIXING YOUR FIRST METAL SONG you demonstrate some dynamic EQ moves on those palm mutes. I'd like to know more about dynamic EQ moves like that, how, why, etc. Thanks for sharing.
Damn, this is a cool trick. I've been using a multi-band EQ as a polishing technique on my Master bus, but had never considered using it one guitar tracks. This is way better than just a basic EQ notch in the muddy frequencies, because it's dynamic instead of a static cut in the frequency spectrum.

May I still let it kick and have +3dB but additionally lower all the mix down, to avoid clipping and overload?
For us songwriters using Cubase Artist, what would be a good alternative multiband compressor?
Do you have any tips for using this and your most recent video about the PEQ cut around the 400 - 2k with live shows? I use two Axe FX 3's for my band's 2 guitars and bass so we could basically do this...but eq'ing a live sound is a bit more difficult that doing mixing like this.
Would have to get either yourself or somebody you trust to sit in the middle of a larger-ish room and see how it translates and go from there. One thing I'd say is that for live, you'll need some mids, especially if you want your drummer to hear what you're doing.

The EQ cut would be a constant cut that was applied during your whole mix, regardless of what would be happening in the frequency range. With the multiband, it reacts to how much information is in the frequency range and adjusts, i.e., it only takes out a certain amount of frequency in relation to how much frequency information there is. Where a -3dB EQ would always cut -3dB from the frequency regardless if the area needed it or not, the multiband reacts to the signal, which makes it sound more natural and only does work when the frequencies reached a certain threshold where they are a problem.

Monumental video/guidelines. But I've got one for you, a tricky one; Guitar solo's. Yea, its an solo, like a vocalist type ov mix since it should sharpteeth its way outta the mix, be distinct. How would you approach this ting MasterMaestro? And yeah, i'm hitting on the walls of extreme metal, or metal in general. I've been noobing around this disc for years, never found the magical trick. I've Even used the golden trick on eq, those "bring it to life areas" middle and high, lowcut it as a massacre, but I just can't make it all shine through. Best Regards Brother! Keep yar torch lit 🍻
Solos in metal need to start with being a completely different chain. Different amp, different cabinets. Cabinets that are voiced different automatically pop out from the rhythm tones. From there, thin out the leads (lows and mid content) and turn it up. Maybe a slight boost around 2-3k, and that's about it. The main thing: creating a tone from a completely different source from the rhythm guitars.

What if I want to do the opposite?
I'm trying to do a cover of Nothing Left by Obscure Sphinx. Tuning is double drop D (8 string), and the 8th string low D is just amazingly powerful, yet clear, withour too much distortion.
I know what rig they use and I try to replicate it exactly in VST plugins. Major difference are strings though - their low D is .105, mine is .80. Would fresh, thicker strings make that much difference?
The tone would most definitely be fatter because the mass of the string is bigger.

.105 in my guitar. I know they used basically the same ones that I have, just newer ones with an inch longer scale and different markers since these were their endorsement guitars

I love how much better the steinberg 4 band is than the c4 ha ha
A big reason this happens is due to poor speaker cab design. Mesa oversized cabs are especially bad about this. What's going on is the giant rear baffle isn't secured properly to the center brace stud, and the rear baffle resonates sympathetically w/ the speakers, causing a massive woofing sound when you palm mute. That's the spike you see in your EQ metering that you're trying to correct for. Eventually when the cab is old enough, the baffle will actually start rattling (!!) against that center brace stud making the cab completely fart out during some palm muted notes. It sounds like a jackhammer. The way to fix is either to drill a fastening screw directly through the baffle into the center brace stud (like the quality cab makers do out of the shop), or you can fasten a piece of material between the center brace and the rear cab baffle to serve as a dampening shim between the baffle and center brace. I've used neoprene in the past with good results.
It's better to fix these issues with poor cab design first before you start tracking, that way you don't have to waste your time with corrective MB compressors or EQ tweaking later on.
