Most competitors at the time tried to either fit the gun into existing air frames, or modify one of their prototypes they had. Only the A-10s designer did the smart thing and built around the gun. For example the engines were chosen as they could resist the guns recoil while also being fuel efficient with decent speed, and could be mounted with space between them. When that Gun fired it would stall out the other designs. Also the space was so that if one engine was damaged in combat the chances of both being damaged was reduced.

I've heard the A-10 was the perfect aircraft for talented aspiring pilots, but happen to be built like a linebacker. Part of the A-10s survivability is that it's pilot can muscle their way in maneuvering the plane if catastrophic damage occurs to its hydraulics.
Not true, most A-10 pilots are small in size and strength. If both hydraulic systems are lost the plane is controlled manually through a complex leverage system. Most of the maneuverability is lost but the pilot usually can make it back to safety.
The system was known as Manual Reversion, disconnecting the ailerons and the elevators from hydraulic power. These surfaces were then "flown" by wire and lever to the trim tabs. Slow and cumbersome, but the plane was not disabled.
Glad to see the Warthog still in active duty and being updated. The A-10 is one of my all time favourite military planes. Along with the F14 Tomcat, F16 Fighting Falcon & F5/F20 Tigershark
A-10's are alot more advanced and overall different to fly and manage than most modern jets and planes if anything the unmanned version could be used instead but the manned ones would be impossible for Ukraine to make use of for longer than the war can afford to go on.
I only once saw an A10 displaying at an air show. It’s ability to manoeuvre at low level within a small space was astonishing. Sadly that was the only UK air show where an A10 flew, all others only had them in the static park. When I asked one of the pilots, he said they had insufficient currency to fly in front of the public. Gloom!
I was at an airshow at my old Air Guard base. An A-10 was going to do a flight demonstration. A few of my friends and I had gone to the other side of the base to do some pistol shooting. On the way back we decided to park our blue Air Force truck in a field on the opposite side of the runway away from the crowd so we could watch the show from there. After the A-10 took off it made a sharp turn and came around towards us. It then lined us up and made a low altitude high speed pass right over us. It then turned around sharply and came back and did it again. In all it made six similar high speed passes right over the truck. It was very exciting. Later on we talked to the A-10 pilot. He said while he was taxiing out he saw our truck sitting in the field and decided it would make a good anchor point to be his show center. So by luck we ended up with the best seats in the house.
Little note, the GAU-8 wasn't designed for the A-10, the A-10 was built AROUND the GAU-8. Also they have been trying to retire the A-10 since the late 90's but it's been swatted down every time.

I have one request about your videos though, can you please not use that obnoxious and completely unnecessary faux "interlaced video" thing you have going? It is very irritating to the eyes, just like the old analog interlaced video was. The biggest advantage to HD, digital video after the high resolution is the progressive video without that obnoxious, "Venetian blind" effect of interlaced video.

Lack of competition in Russia has shown much of the world through the footage in the war in Ukraine that Russian tanks, planes, etc., are just crap. Many nations now are cancelling their orders for many Russian deals after seeing just how terrible Russian war machines actually are. If the west ever went to war, (excluding nukes, as no one would survive total nuke war and those who went first would be the lucky ones). Russian has now threatened Sweden and Finland if they join NATO and who not not join after seeing how Russia has acted toward a not NATO freedom loving democracy. The next month or so will tell us much, as Ukraine is getting some very good equipment now and they will put it to good use. Russian has a lot of troops and concentrated war material, so their is lot of targets for Ukraine.
This is the kind of gun they used to put planes on. It wasn't a case of 'Oh, we got this jet fighter, it kinda needs something besides missiles and bombs and sh*t, let's strap this thing on'. NO. It was a case of a guy making a gun SO awesome, that he just stepped back, and said, "This sh*t needs to fly'. And everyone else is like, 'You can't make a gun fly!'. And the first guy is all like, 'F**k you, yes I can. I will strap a plane to this gun.' And everyone's like, 'You mean strap the gun to a plane?' And the first guy is like, 'No, man. I am strapping the plane to the gun. The plane is an accessory.' And then everyone's minds were blown. Like, there was some serious mind blowing going on there. Ears were bleeding. Synapses just went and committed suicide because it was so awesome.
Imagine what a squadron of A-10s could do to those Russian columns invading Ukraine. It would make for a pretty short war (opps, I mean "special military operation").
The A-10 is also a capable dogfighter. During close in air-to-air combat the A-10's ability to turn tightly along with its big gun allow it to effectively defend itself against fighter aircraft. I once saw an A-10 dogfight an F-4. Anytime the F-4 got behind the A-10 it would roll 90 degrees and go into a very tight turn that the F-4 couldn't match. The A-10 could also drop down into hilly uneven terrain where the F-4 couldn't follow it. And my Air Guard unit had a couple of air-to-air kills by A-10's against F-15's.
It's a horrible dogfighter, because it's way too slow for that. Overall dogfights are not really a big thing even less today, you get shot down my missiles, no one wants to use bord cannons for that. A tight turn does not help you against an enemy, that is simply way too fast for you. Can you be lucky? Sure. But that's it. You are at a giant disadvantage, but it's simply not the job of the A-10 to fight against air targets.
@@miriamweller812 You don't understand anything about dogfighting. First, shooting missiles from a long distance is not considered dogfighting. Dogfighting is when two airplanes are close together and are using guns or short range missiles against one another. In a close in air-to-air dogfight speed is actually a disadvantage because your turn radius increases. This means you won't be able to turn inside a slower airplane that can turn tighter and can reverse faster but he will be able to turn inside of you. The only advantage from speed is that it gets you to the fight faster but then you have to slow down when you get there so you can maneuver quickly. Second, it may not be the job of an A-10 to do dogfighting but it becomes its job if it has to defend itself. That's why all A-10 pilots are required to regularly practice dogfighting while flying the A-10.
@@joevignolor4u949 no he’s correct 1. Missile slinging aka BVR is the fight before dogfighting, you can’t mention dogfighting without mentioning the reason why dogfighting has died in the modern battlefield 2. As a citizen of the Netherlands and a fan of the A10 i have to say I'm sad we never incorporated the A10 into our forces. It would have been a perfect fit and better option than the F35 and cheaper. But this is my opinion and certainly would differ to others opinions.
The A-10 is not multirole. The f-35 on the other hand is a much better choice, considering that a lot of what the A-10 can do, the f-16 also can and the Netherlands air force already has them.

@@cordedrexcordedrex6854 i respect your opinion. I just can't see the benefits of such an expensive plane in our forces. Even the upkeep is very expensive and has less support with firepower to the battlefield for the troops. The way the Netherlands defense is built up the F35 is out of place.
The Warthog is beautiful aircraft especially to ground troops when it come to their rescue. A-10s kick butt. Why the government would ever consider replacing the A-10 is ridiculous giving it's continuing success on the battle field. Upgrading is fine, but keep it flying. Yeah, we need to send these to Ukraine and kick Putin's butt big time. Those long lines of convoys would be ideal to take out. Putin would really be whining then and making even more baseless threats. I am sure the pilots of A-10s love being in combat with a weapon as deadly as the A-10, it is one hell of a weapon for all seasons. Great video update.
It would be really cool to see a modern fighter air craft that had a remote control mobile gun 🔫 so the aircraft can be going in any direction but shoot in any direction. With the use of a joystick 🕹️ HD LCD screen and built in technology that helps with aiming and compensation for movement compared to the bullet trajectories. That would be really beneficial.
The GAU-8 fires 30mm rounds at 3,900 which produces around 45 kN of recoil, just about if not more thrust than both of the A-10's engines. If the gun was moved even a millimeter from its original position, the entire aircraft would loose control when firing. A fighter/attack platform simply is not fit enough to have a remote control weapons system that would be effective. Large cargo aircraft are much better fit for this role (think of the AC-130) because they can handle the recoil.
You can do exactly what you’ve asked for very easily with current missile tech from beyond the horizon line. Bullets being fired from planes has been obsolete for decades.
The F-35 is unparalleled at transferring taxpayer money to contractors. You spent $6000 on the F-35 if you are an average American. And got nothing for it. ($2 Trillion and counting is $6000 per American.)
The brass keep looking for that silver bullet; the multirole aircraft that can do it all. No such aircraft exists, and there's going to come a day when they figure that out. To create a combat aircraft that can take on interceptors but also loiter low-and-slow to provide CAS would really require a bunch of breakthroughs in aviation. I just don't see how it's possible.

Maybe Russian equipment is pretty good, it's the tactics and quality of the training that's making it look so terrible 🙄

Nice shout out as to being named after one of the toughest planes of WWII. The Thunderbolt.
Thanks for your service ✊
@@joevignolor4u949 no he’s correct
1. Missile slinging aka BVR is the fight before dogfighting, you can’t mention dogfighting without mentioning the reason why dogfighting has died in the modern battlefield
2. Dogfighting is more then just horizontal circles, in a dogfight the a-10 has the low speed turn advantage, a good pilot knows this thus uses his high speed advantage to do things like extend away and come back around for another fight or push the fight vertical where the a-10 will be fighting to keep its nose up
Sure the a-10 can definitely pull off some good tricks and get kills but the person you responded to was right in the sense there’s some areas where the a-10 falls flat

@ out of place because ?

I knew a guy who flew 50 missions in Desert Storm, many of them in A-10s. He didn't like to talk about it though.
That’s because it has a history of friendly fire and was generally disliked by many (especially allied coalition forces).
The gatling gun in these aircraft is what the aircraft was designed around. It is not a .50 or 30mm.
WARTHOG BABY!!!!! lol, the A-10 platform is such a monster =]
There isn’t any possibility the F-35 could do what the A-10 can.
@Rob: You are not alone in that assessment.
