This version of the Honda hybrid drivetrain is really cool, and I like whatever trickery they're doing here to make it seem like it's upshifting near redline - something a lot of CVTs do now, but it usually sounds fake and annoying. From what I understand, it works as a series hybrid (ICE used only as a generator) 90% of the time, but when you step on it there's a clutch and gear set that allows the engine to drive both the generator and output shaft simultaneously, more like a Toyota or Ford hybrid. Totally seamless in operation, unlike the old IMA hybrids. AFAIK Honda began using this system with the original Accord Plug-In (a very rare car, too ahead of its time) and I agree, a bigger battery and plug would be a nice upgrade on the CR-V too.

I have a 2021 CRV Hybrid and I am very happy with it, I am surprised that they have taken some of the features that I and probably others like out of the 2023 version. For one, the flat cargo area, and secondly the rear seat release in the trunk, and lastly no fog lights. I do like the updated screen, the traditional shift handle and the hill descent feature, although putting my current CRV in sport mode when descending does help keep the speed fairly well controlled. All in all the new version is nice, but I'll hold off on upgrading for a few more years.

Honda guy here. Things I noticed on Honda cars are fitment of panels are a level down from VW (for example) for the same category of the car. This should be improved without any excuses. Highway noise which is related to acoustic insulation of cabin. Updates of some components is not with trend now. This car particularly has standard stick shifter, but more and more cars are switching to buttons shifters. Button shifter gives you clean look of central console. Partially analog driver info system. Classic look of that system as well. But, don’t get me wrong, all these marks are fixable by Honda. Their doctrine is get a quality of engine and components, and keep the price of the cars within competitors. Other manufactures balance that in fav of cosmetic looks, more modern amenities, but likely more glitches with engine and components.

    • @ciello___8307

When you need to slow down, like when you came around a turn, you said you used some regen. I assume it was so you didn’t have to actually press the brake pedal. What if you just want to drive it normally? Just put your foot on the break to slow down a bit? I’m test driving one today and that regen paddle stuff seems just too confusing.

probably two reasons. one is because it makes the typical user more comfortable vs hearing it sit at redline. and two its an Atkinson cycle engine and they typically are most efficient in a narrow power band. it may be just capitalizing on that.
