WOW! This is amazing. Everything is so different. McDonalds was only one floor and you could drive straight on to the oval from 15th. No Wexner Center...awesome video.
I lived at 237 1/2 West 8th from '89-'90. I'm not sure when they split it up , but 237 1/2 was the 2nd and 3rd floors. I had the bedroom on the 3rd floor (attic ), front and side windows. Great apartment, but extremely cold. Many days way below zero that winter and no heat. I ended up really sick. Lol. It's still there, I drove past a few months ago and took a pic. I'm always amazed that it's still there too. They removed the side chimney
This is hilarious and a strange coincidence! We lived there from 1987-88 right before you. The windows leaked a lot so we got plastic sheets and duct tape to seal the windows. We got broken into thru the kitchen. We lived upstairs (right unit if you looked at front stoop). Had dark green carpet.
When I moved to Cols in 87 Gyros were $.75 at that place above BW3. I see them regularly now for $8.99. That's a big difference when a job might make you $5hr then vs $8 now
Lol! I remember that place. Gyros were $1 back in 1987. I would go there really late if I was starving walking from the library. I think they had a bunch of pool tables. The gyros spindle would sit on the floor in a corner and this old fat Greek guy would pick it up and put it on the table and turn it on. I think the meat would be on it covered with aluminum foil. No concern for food safety back then - lol.
I was born in 1999 in volumbus ohio, once the housing crash happened it started to get pretty bad in the hilltop, franklinton, southside, and some parts of the eastside. I grew uo in hilltop before i moved the the east coast, a house my family built in the 1920's is still standing on north burgess ave, i plan on moving back at some point. Hilltops gotten pretty bad over time but i dont mind.
I turned 4 in october of 85 other than one or two yrs of my life ive lived in columbus or other parts of ohio but mostly columbus and I have a hard time remembering what the city looked like back then in the mid eighties but u taped it so i can see it now thanks
I grew up a few miles north of the campus. I was 10 when this was shot, there was a good chance you might have seen me and my brother racing our bikes across High St. Things I would never let my kids do! 😅
17 w. 3rd Ave. Right off high street. My dad rented a room, shared a bathroom with the entire floor. He smashed my Atari Lynx in the alley next to the building.
Trippin' dude!!! I was 16 then. I remember the hair like those gals in the ally had. I was all over that mo' fo' a couple years after this was taken. Dig those retro cars. What I want to know was how did you fit that camera in the car??? LOL
yep. when I get my desktop up and running, I'll have a compliment to this video. You've spawned a good idea into a great idea in my head. THanks for that.
i've been living in cols since 1993...the campus area has changed even more since this vid was made...i was surprised to see that you used to be able to drive into the oval...those apts these guys used to live in are still there...i used to live on w 8th ave as well...
man you really need to fix the rendering on this video.... i live off King & Highland now and would love to see the footage more clearly when you drive down McMillen to Hunter to King. this is such a time capsule!!!
Anyone know of an apartment building that was around this area ? It was three stories and three buildings, they each faced each other and were white. I think they were made out of concrete, concrete blocks. Devry university used this building for student housing, someone else owned it. You had to use an alley to gain entrance or entered it from the side. Devry called this place “ technician square” I went to school here in 1978.
Anyone remember Bernie's bagels? There was a little bookshop on the second floor of that building. Can't remember it's name. I've only been back to High Street a few times in the past 20 years. I barely recognize it now. Sad.
The "bar strip" gentrified. And that strip from 9th to 11th is today, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile & Sprint stores. Bernies is gone to the now being constructed "North Campus Gateway".
My God, is that funny....I worked for the McDonald's on HIgh St., across from OSU....and I think we used Shamrock to tow cars that were parked in our lot illegally! SMALL world!!
Holy shit, that's how High St looked 20 years ago? Incredible. You can't even drive down it now with all the traffic. Also, it's almost nothing but gays now. And all those streets around the University are so run down and trashy now. It makes it so depressing.
Nope it sucks now nothing good anymore I remember the arcade pink flamingo , the coffee shop insomnia and but then again that was in the 90s this was in 1985 I 6 lol but still it sux here now nothing to do anymore
The digital transfer has nothing to do with it - this was taped with an old-style tube Sony camera, you can do just so much with footage like this.....
I was remembering how things were in Columbus in 85. I miss those days..Thanks for the memory
I graduated in '86, so this was my era. Lots more laid back than today...and the campus bars weren't so pretty as they are now!
Lies bars have never been pretty you damn kid
High St. Looked seedy back then!
I grew up and still live in Columbus. I was 14 at the time this was recorded. What a great ride down memory lane...Thanks!
Omg. Thank you so much for posting this!!!! I remember when campus looked like this. So much more bohemian and trashy fun.

all that campus is gone now.
Ohio State is destroying anything from the old days.

That was an early Panasonic 1-piece VHS camcorder, and for its day, it was really good!!
I love seeing this old footage! Brings back so many memories, of my childhood!
Can I use this footage for a documentary?
Absolutely, just give me credit somewhere.
@@videoholicreturns I will put a special thanks in the credits. Thank you, so much!
@@progressissuccess743 you're very welcome!

0:33 Zantigo's, so much better than Taco Bell.
Im a student at Ohio State right now. It's amazing how much things have changed.
17 w. 3rd Ave. Right off high street. My dad rented a room, shared a bathroom with the entire floor. He smashed my Atari Lynx in the alley next to the building.
I actually was on the campus in Oct. of 2009, at night, and although I couldn't see a lot, I didn't recognize any storefront!!!!
Trippin' dude!!! I was 16 then. I remember the hair like those gals in the ally had. I was all over that mo' fo' a couple years after this was taken. Dig those retro cars.
What I want to know was how did you fit that camera in the car??? LOL
@videoholicreturns I used to live over in that area when I was 4, it's changed a lot.

What happened to the video? Anyone have any video of the short north form the 1970s?
Yeah that mcdonalds is a 2 story building now....it really is wierd seeing the city I have been born and raised in before I was even a thought.
A pretty cool video thanks for sharing did you actually take this video?
Yes I did!!!
its more modern, it looks like a store in NYC now, more so than an old fashion Mcd's reasturant.
Do you still live in Columbus?
It looks like a mall now a days so sad. I got so many parking tickets at that mcdoalds going into that young kidsrecord store
Anyone remember Bernie's bagels? There was a little bookshop on the second floor of that building. Can't remember it's name.
I've only been back to High Street a few times in the past 20 years. I barely recognize it now. Sad.

My son was a year old
So odd to see the world existing before I was born.
What the hell is the South CAmpus Gateway????
The "bar strip" gentrified. And that strip from 9th to 11th is today, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile & Sprint stores. Bernies is gone to the now being constructed "North Campus Gateway".

2:19 DAMN CHURCH
He's not black.
What a shitty digital transfer. You need a better person to use better equipment to redo this.
The digital transfer has nothing to do with it - this was taped with an old-style tube Sony camera, you can do just so much with footage like this.....
videoholicreturns I loved it. I'm from Columbus but I was born in 2000. Nice to see how it looked 20 years prior to that.
there were gay people on high st then as well. get over it.
