A Few Things You Should Know About Aristophanes, The Funny Guy Of Ancient Greek Theatre

- Apologies for some of the audio in this! I have no idea why it got a little stressy at some points in the video, but I hope it's not too distracting (Aristophanes woulda had a field day making fun of this if only he were to see it).
Also, just so everyone knows, the wild play I couldn't say is also called "Assembly Women". If you guys want me to summarise this play I WILL be using this title over the Greek one.

Ooh, “Clouds”, please!
☁️☁️
The Aegina Island has always been alluring even in moden times for lots of Greek artists, architects, authors and painters, even if they were not actually born there. One of the most prominent among them being Nikos Kazantzakis. Coming from Crete, he lived in Aegina for at least ten years and (to compliment your mythology theme) during that period of his life he produced a major part of his work, including his version of the Odyssey (a continuation of Odysseas' adventures after the end of Homer's Odyssey; he also co-translated both of Homer's epic poems to modern Greek, so that task definitely influenced his work). Thus, in comparison, the theory of Aristophanes being born in Aegina (or coming from that area) has some degree of truthfullness :)
PS. Kudos to you, you can always do a video for Menander next ;) (unless you have already and I have missed it).
A video about clouds would be really interesting

Omg you can't imagine how obsessed im with your videos, I just discovered you today and I'm blown away by your knowledge on the matter but mostly for your way of communicating this (for some) complicated topics such as mythology as a whole. I just wish your videos never ended ❤
🥹thank you so much oh my god🖤
I adore Aristophanes; he really was the 🐐
Keep up the great work, Erica
Thank youuuu 🙌🏼
Thank you Erica. As always, you provide excellent presentation of extremely interesting ancient histories.
Thank you so much 🥹🫶🏼
I studied acting in college and we had to read Lysistrata. Instantly loved it, can't wait for your video on it.
📋✅😇
You should be world famous Erica!
Can’t study “classics” without grappling with “class”. Both ancient, and modern. Maybe there’s something there? Just a thought, luv! I’ll keep watching in any case.
This is for you miss teach 🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎🍏🍏🍏🍏🍏🍏🍏🍏🍏

Thanks for another great video!
I would love to hear you talk about clouds. I have been meaning to read it ever since michael sugrue discussed it in his lecture on aristophanes. Best wishes!
Added to the list! Thank you for watching 🌷
I vote for a presentation on The Knights! Thanks for what you do!
You are so welcome 🫶🏼
Lysistrata is my favourite, so I'm more than happy you have it in the list. But it'd be marvellous if you talk about all 11 of his comedies.
I’ll see what I can do 😇😇😇
The Assemblywomen sounds interesting (no worries if you don't want to say Ecclesiazusae)
I CAN’T PRONOUNCE THE GREEK AND IT MAKES ME SO SAD 😂🥲🫠
Very good ! Λυσιστράτη ! Erica, please. A Greek friend, Demetrios Maniates.

If Aristophanes can curse out Socrates in the local paper I feel democracy just might work. (me 350bc)
Thank you for this introduction and helping us to understand Aristophanes' comedies!
Any chance of sharing a link or showing some of the illustrations to Lysistrata drawn by Aubrey Beardsley when you talk about the play? Just curious...
If they are under fair use, then of course. I haven’t checked but if they’re not then I can’t use them due to copyright reasons!
❤
