Triangle strategy was such a treat as well as so many of the others. Octopath 2 is probably right up there for me though. The villains, characters, exploration, strategy and music are just top notch.

You definitely need to check out Future Redeemed. Let that purchase slide because it's basically it's own game and worth it especially if you've played all of the Xenoblade games and their DLCs. It was a bit of a shame it didn't get a physical release like Torna did though.

@@ataridc I do get the apprehension with buying DLC for a game. I've had a couple instances where I bought the game and DLC and never got to the DLC because I kind of fell of the game before I got to that point. This is why I haven't bought KH3 Remind. In my opinion though since Xenoblade's DLC are standalone games with about as much content as an episode of Xenosaga had they're worth the purchase. Not to mention both Torna and Future Redeemed don't need to be played alongside the base games in order to enjoy them. Their stories just add to the base game. An instance where I wasn't too happy about the DLC was with Final Fantasy XV because it felt like they deliberately cut out content to sell as DLC. I was much more okay with approach episode Ardyn had though and I kind of wish the second wave of DLC actually went all the way through as that would have been the equivalent of Xenoblade's DLC for that game with standalone episodes.

The story was good, but gameplay wise it felt weaker than 2's even though I've got some big issues with 2's gameplay, gatcha and field skills especially. Future Redeemed fixed quite a few of the issues I had with the base game and added some great incentives to explore the world in that game with the AP system. It was also great to see grown up Shulk and Rex. Yeah I'm bummed they didn't do a physical release for that. I think that's probably because the physical copy of Torna didn't sell that well. It was probably because it was more of a collectors item and most people just bought the season pass instead.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 might be my favorite JRPG ever honestly. I had so much fun with the combat, the story was great, the characters really grew on me, the music… I even enjoyed the DLCs. Just an awesome package of JRPG goodness, played it for over 200hrs which for me is incredibly rare for any kind of game.

I haven't gotten around to a lot of modern JRPGs but after a really boring start with Bravely Default II, a few chapters into it I got really hooked into it.
I'd put Astlibra here too if we're stepping out of the turn based mechanic and modern graphics. A grand epic b movie jrpg story with an addictive progression and simple combat that can be surprisingly complex if you want it too.
For me Chained Echoes is not just one of the best modern JRPR, but one of the best of all time thatI played. Not on your list, but hope more players enjoy it

Many great games in the works, but I'm seriously holding off until I'm caught up with Trails SC. I want to enjoy Reverie to it's fullest even if it means playing years from now.
I started with part 1 last August and just finished reverie. You can do it too :)! It's worth it but the quality declines from game to game (in my opinion).
I started my journey with Sky FC back in February this year. I really got hooked. 10 consecutive Trails games in 6 months. It was well timed so that I didn't have to wait for Azure or Reverie, I was getting to those games right after they were released (to the west). I just finished Reverie a couple weeks ago, and it was such an amazing payoff to the journey. Someone help me... I'm having Trails withdrawals...
Reverie is really good, can't wait till people can get their hands on Kuro as well. Easily the best first game in a new arc in terms of story. Calvard arc has a lot of potential.
1) DQXIS (with a slight difficulty bump from the draconian settings, otherwise a tick top easy) is imo the most complete Jrpg (diverse builds, great story & characters, huge game, great combat & crafting, nice style & music, even if VIII OST was better).. ... 2) Persona 5R comes in 2nd.. ... 3) Xenoblade 3 as 3rd..

I liked it a lot, but although it's not a JRPG I'm loving Baldur's Gate 3 even more (I'm 130 hours in). It's my first CRPG (if you don't count Skyrim or Kingdoms of Amalur) and it feels like a mix of FFT, FFXII and Skyrim. I advise any JRPG-lover starving for a high production values experience to try it. Great graphics, great music, great characters and story, and great turn-based battle system. I'm not finished and already planned to play it again to play with other characters, other classes and make different choices throughout. Insane replay value too.
@@armorvil I think BG3 should be a category on itself, under "required to play" list, as long as you have ever considered playing games as a form of leisure/entertainment. There is a lot to be learned both from a player's perspective and a developer's perspective from the game. Since irl DnD campaigns may take a lot more commitment to fully immerse yourself and enjoy the experience, this game is really a good stepping stone for players who wish to do so without the available time commitments too. Truly worthy being called game of the year.
Tales of arise is the best game I’ve played. Not gonna lie I barely finish games but this is one of the game I played so many hours and ended up finishing.
Diofield chronicles! I'm playing that right now. The combat is super fun. People have complained it's too easy, which is why i play in hard. It's pretty challenging.
I like the idea of the game. But it's another game that tries to use a hybrid system to get more people to buy it. I'd have rathered they made it straight up action or focus on a more in depth turn based system. I'm tired of these half-assed attempts at hybrid systems to get more customers.

But this is more like a ttrpg single player version of world of Warcraft (as far as combat). They have demo versions available. If you don't like it no sweat. If you do, your save carries over to the complete game
@@cmhsky uh yeah I played the demo. I didn't just randomly comment on the gameplay without playing the game. It's shit in my opinion. I'm not against the hybrid system. I am against bad hybrid systems. It's not challenging because it's challenging. It's challenging because the controls suck. I played too many bad games growing up in the 80s to deal with shit controls in 2023. For the record, I mostly enjoy the hybrid system that Square put together for FFVIIR. But, and it's a big BUT, I've also got a love/hate relationship with that game. When the hybrid system works, it works flawlessly. But when it doesn't work, it fails spectacularly. I found the same to be true for DC. So yeah, another great idea for a game that was executed poorly. At the end of the day, there are tons of great ideas. None of those matter. Only the ones that truly bring the idea to life matter. Diofield fails in that regard for me personally. That said, I'm glad that you found enjoyment from it.
Diofield Chronicle looks cool. How does it compare to Growlanser in terms of battle mechanics and gameplay? It looks like there's many similarities between Growlanser and Diofield Chronicle.

After the epic sexiness of Xenoblade 2, I was really hyped for 3. Only to be let down that the only sexiness through the majority of the game was Eunie's perfect butt. I said it, and I'm glad I said it.
Erick just not gonna finish the xenoblade series cause its $30. Pretty sure Future Redeemed is a good 20-30 hours so its basically a whole game. Worth the price.
I’m a huge Xenoblade fan, and I’m pretty hesitant about buying it digitally. I just dislike buying things digitally especially on Switch where you need to fit everything onto an SD card and accounts for different regions require separate emails and Nintendo accounts. I’d rather just take the cart out of the box and put it in the system.
The tales games are so imposing. Years ago, I played like 1/3 of one of the trails of steel or something on PlayStation game service. It was okay at best, and there being so many titles you need to play on order makes the whole series unapproachable.
Triangle strategy came out on PC last year I believe SMT 5 yeah nah don't know how it's still shackled to the switch, I played a bit on PC using an emulator at 1440p 60fps and its great

can anyone help me find the name of a game i played before. It's set on a fantasy setting with Action rpg mechanics with different playable characters, the opening scene when you play as the male swordsman was you go to a tavern where you supposed to meet with you fellow knight but when you arrive to the placed you found out it was an ambush and you fight your way out. I also remember that one of the playable female characters she uses guns if i recall.
Despite Nier Automata being a 2017 game, I still consider it to be just as modern as any of the Action JRPGs on this list, and an easy contender for worthiness. I guess the release date means it couldn't be on this list, but it deserves honorable mention.
I really want to get into the Trails series, but at this point they have so many games and I don't have to play them all, not to mention I don't even have all the neccessary consoles, and I hate playing games set later in a connected story franchise first.
Most of the games arent that interesting to me besides Tales Of Arise. I played the demo but wasnt too convinced of the combat. So its rotting on my steam wishlist for now. But the graphics of this game 🤩. Absolutely stunning, so I wanna check it out in the future. Scarlet Nexus is the game I liked the most of recent years, if u count it as JRPG.

Tales of Arise was one of the most boring RPG I've got to play, rife with tropes and cliches. It's pretty visuals do not reimburse you for the hours spent playing a story you've played before and reveals you saw coming from a mile away. Stay clear of that one.

Hey Eric Landon RPG You should check out Another Eden: The Cat Beyond Time and Space Its produced by the same guy who made Chrono Cross, Masato Kato-san. It feels like his dream project by how much the story feels like a spiritual sequel. It really feels like Chrono Cross was supposed to have a very big roster of characters, and it feels Masato Kato realized his vision in Another Eden.
I saw Ys and Triangle Strategy in the upper rankings, list approved. Rest of the list were also good, I've played all of them(except the recent Trails titles). You have a good taste. I used to like the Trails series too, but I dropped it when they made Estelle and Joshua side characters with little screen time.. and sh*t started to feel like a chore 😢 I played until halfway of Coldsteel 2 and stopped at that. I wonder if the newer titles are worth playing now. I liked it at least up to Ao no Kiseki, it was meh after that. Would love to see them summon Adol into Zemuria continent to destroy Ouroboros, turn Aidios into a member of his harem of Goddesses and just wrap up the series. Kidding aside, I'd pay to see Adol wreck havoc in Zemuria

Tales of Arise had excellent story and gameplay that kept me hooked. Best game I played so far this year.
I liked it a lot, but although it's not a JRPG I'm loving Baldur's Gate 3 even more (I'm 130 hours in). It's my first CRPG (if you don't count Skyrim or Kingdoms of Amalur) and it feels like a mix of FFT, FFXII and Skyrim. I advise any JRPG-lover starving for a high production values experience to try it. Great graphics, great music, great characters and story, and great turn-based battle system. I'm not finished and already planned to play it again to play with other characters, other classes and make different choices throughout. Insane replay value too.
Severely underrated and definitely one of the best looking JRPGs.
@@armorvil I think BG3 should be a category on itself, under "required to play" list, as long as you have ever considered playing games as a form of leisure/entertainment.
There is a lot to be learned both from a player's perspective and a developer's perspective from the game. Since irl DnD campaigns may take a lot more commitment to fully immerse yourself and enjoy the experience, this game is really a good stepping stone for players who wish to do so without the available time commitments too.
Truly worthy being called game of the year.

Erick don't sleep on Future Redeemed! If you played the previous games from the series the DLC is a must play! It's pretty much it's own game

Triangle Strategy looks very similar to Final Fantasy Tactics advance which I beat twice. Looking forward to playing it soon.
Demons Roots, despite being a rpg maker game with some naughty scenes, quickly became one of my favourite games ever.
Tales of arise is the best game I’ve played.

Diofield chronicles! I'm playing that right now. The combat is super fun. People have complained it's too easy, which is why i play in hard. It's pretty challenging.
I bought it on a whim and I agree it was super surprisingly fun!
I like the idea of the game. But it's another game that tries to use a hybrid system to get more people to buy it. I'd have rathered they made it straight up action or focus on a more in depth turn based system. I'm tired of these half-assed attempts at hybrid systems to get more customers.
@@Xoulrath_ normally i would agree with you. Final fantasy 13, 15 stuff i found trying to do both and succeeding at neither.
But this is more like a ttrpg single player version of world of Warcraft (as far as combat). They have demo versions available. If you don't like it no sweat. If you do, your save carries over to the complete game
@@cmhsky uh yeah I played the demo. I didn't just randomly comment on the gameplay without playing the game. It's shit in my opinion.
I'm not against the hybrid system. I am against bad hybrid systems. It's not challenging because it's challenging. It's challenging because the controls suck. I played too many bad games growing up in the 80s to deal with shit controls in 2023.
For the record, I mostly enjoy the hybrid system that Square put together for FFVIIR. But, and it's a big BUT, I've also got a love/hate relationship with that game. When the hybrid system works, it works flawlessly. But when it doesn't work, it fails spectacularly. I found the same to be true for DC.
So yeah, another great idea for a game that was executed poorly. At the end of the day, there are tons of great ideas. None of those matter. Only the ones that truly bring the idea to life matter. Diofield fails in that regard for me personally. That said, I'm glad that you found enjoyment from it.

Diofield Chronicle looks cool. How does it compare to Growlanser in terms of battle mechanics and gameplay? It looks like there's many similarities between Growlanser and Diofield Chronicle.
You need to get future redeemed. Really worth 30 dollars and makes xenoblade 3 even a better game for me. Easily one of my favorite rpgs ever made

Erick just not gonna finish the xenoblade series cause its $30. Pretty sure Future Redeemed is a good 20-30 hours so its basically a whole game. Worth the price.
I’m a huge Xenoblade fan, and I’m pretty hesitant about buying it digitally. I just dislike buying things digitally especially on Switch where you need to fit everything onto an SD card and accounts for different regions require separate emails and Nintendo accounts. I’d rather just take the cart out of the box and put it in the system.

The tales games are so imposing. Years ago, I played like 1/3 of one of the trails of steel or something on PlayStation game service. It was okay at best, and there being so many titles you need to play on order makes the whole series unapproachable.

Triangle strategy came out on PC last year I believe
SMT 5 yeah nah don't know how it's still shackled to the switch, I played a bit on PC using an emulator at 1440p 60fps and its great

can anyone help me find the name of a game i played before. It's set on a fantasy setting with Action rpg mechanics with different playable characters, the opening scene when you play as the male swordsman was you go to a tavern where you supposed to meet with you fellow knight but when you arrive to the placed you found out it was an ambush and you fight your way out. I also remember that one of the playable female characters she uses guns if i recall.
For as many cliches as it falls into; Monster Girl 1000 is something that can not be overlooked.
If you're going down that path, then Black Souls 1 and 2 are more JRPG.

Despite Nier Automata being a 2017 game, I still consider it to be just as modern as any of the Action JRPGs on this list, and an easy contender for worthiness. I guess the release date means it couldn't be on this list, but it deserves honorable mention.

I really want to get into the Trails series, but at this point they have so many games and I don't have to play them all, not to mention I don't even have all the neccessary consoles, and I hate playing games set later in a connected story franchise first.

I want to be able to change the bgm in regular battles like in persona 5. A good beat you like can make all the difference when you fight.
Most of the games arent that interesting to me besides Tales Of Arise. I played the demo but wasnt too convinced of the combat. So its rotting on my steam wishlist for now. But the graphics of this game 🤩. Absolutely stunning, so I wanna check it out in the future.

@@StrongestRegion It's very polarizing, as it's barely an RPG (it has level-ups, but they do nothing really) and the story is very hit-or-miss as well. Personally I can't stand it but a ton of people seem to love it.

I am so glad that Legend of Heroes games are Low end friendly, so I can play them on my potato pc
personally i don't really enjoy FF16, especially its visuals.. it doesn't feel like a JRPG.. if i don't read the name, i'd think its a western RPG or a souls-like game..
even God of War has more RPG elements its absolutely pathetic, its visuals are so backwards the resolution and colors are pathetic.
Yeah... I think FF16 is just ok... After 30 hours nothing really was that engaging and became a slog.
Tales of Arise was one of the most boring RPG I've got to play, rife with tropes and cliches. It's pretty visuals do not reimburse you for the hours spent playing a story you've played before and reveals you saw coming from a mile away. Stay clear of that one.

It feels like his dream project by how much the story feels like a spiritual sequel.
It really feels like Chrono Cross was supposed to have a very big roster of characters, and it feels Masato Kato realized his vision in Another Eden.

Graces f is the most challenging in the series. IMO
Tales of Arise was kind of bland and formulaic in regards to the story. Beseria still best Tales story for me.

I saw Ys and Triangle Strategy in the upper rankings, list approved. Rest of the list were also good, I've played all of them(except the recent Trails titles). You have a good taste. I used to like the Trails series too, but I dropped it when they made Estelle and Joshua side characters with little screen time.. and sh*t started to feel like a chore 😢 I played until halfway of Coldsteel 2 and stopped at that. I wonder if the newer titles are worth playing now.
I liked it at least up to Ao no Kiseki, it was meh after that. Would love to see them summon Adol into Zemuria continent to destroy Ouroboros, turn Aidios into a member of his harem of Goddesses and just wrap up the series.
Kidding aside, I'd pay to see Adol wreck havoc in Zemuria
