@@LembeckIsStaying stealing a genre, and stealing literal finished products from other artists are two different things. im a producer and im all for samples but in a lot of these instances they are just deliberately taking substantial portions of songs and just layering effects over them. being a hip hop producer I try to take pride in and pay homage to the original artists by putting my own spin on something already established.

But Macintosh Plus does it right
Some of these are pretty much what French DJ's were doing in the 90's with French House and Nu Disco but with a more modern sound. Daft Punk's first album was based around this entire technique. I find it funny how people think this is new. (with the exception of the Macintosh Plus album with is literally just slowed down 80's songs and not much effort put into it)
daft punks first album didn't had that much sampling and if there was, it was well hidden. their second one tho had alot more samples.
I think that Homework (first album) dont have so mano samples but Discovery (second álbum) have so mano samples

The fact that vaporwave has become such an umbrella term for such complicated subgenres is good to hear because vaporwave 4 years ago was so simple versus today which is such a mix of chillwave, non-sampled and other things yet preserving the aesthetics of it. I like it.
well half of these arent vaporwave anyways and dont fit under the umbrella. theyre future funk. the aesthetics are so similar snd they have similar samples so peopke often just group them together

Remixed, Sampled, Slowed, Made Faster, Pitch and Reverb done up and an Actual beat is added, In some cases the vaporwave actually sounds better then the originals but the process is much bigger than what other people think, i highly recommend research.

The faster paced Japanese songs are future funk, not vaporwave.
Future Funk actually has many of its roots in Vaporwave. They're like cousins essentially. Many people group them together though.
Right, but still different. Vaporwave is (mostly) a bunch of corporate elevator music that’s been skewed and altered to give it a new feeling or amp up the “sexiness” of it. It’s also very nostalgic sounding, since most of the music sampled is from the 80’s and early 90’s.
FutureFunk is just Japanese music either sped up, or with added beats.
Future Funk is a subgenre of Vaporwave, so technically it's not wrong to call it that.

I feel like the greatest thing about vaporwave is it finds a way to mash Japanese funk/soul and African American funk/soul into the same genre. Mixed in with the target aesthetic of decaying nostalgia, it's a cultural dreamstate melting pot of yum!

Shnitzel_von_shtubenstein It started as that, and some still are. The first ever vaporwave songs from eccojams for example. Its all looped, slowed down portions of songs. Now the "genre" has gladly gone beyond and it has been producing more original content evoking the same nostalgic feels (2814 as an example, which uses little to no samples)
Future Funk on the other hand hasn't evolved much. It's still the same shifted pitch, couple of synths and some chorus effect on a already "future" funk song from japan or eu/usa.

Not gonna lie. Aside from MJ, I had no idea who all these artists/bands were or what Vaporwave is but consider me a fan now.

id say one or two of these are actually transformative beyond changing speed/speech, but even then, its just adding another sample on top.
despite all that, i can appreciate what's ACTUALLY been created from this meme taken too far.
Vaporwave is a legitimate genre. I don't care how many people think that this is a meme. It perfectly replicates the elevator and lounge music that was popular during 80's and 90's hypercapitalism and consumerism.
The original artists should get more credit since all the vaporwave artists do is overlay a couple of small beats and effects.

I understand what you mean but I also think it's more about the end result than what process the samples have gone through, if it maintains the vibe of the original song while still being different then the artist probably was confident enough to only do those certain things to the original song, anyway i dont think lazyness plays a role else they probably wouldn't be making songs etc in the first place

+Spaget Spookdya. there are many producers who aren't interested in making melody or invoking anything that brings the sample source too far from its origin. in many ways it is a 21st century form of Themes on a Variation ; it isn't about lazy, especially when you consider that most vaporwave tracks come from larger releases that have the context of an artwork, a stage name, and several other sampled artists to contextualize alongside the sample used. most vaporwave needs to be experienced in the context of its full album form in order to get where the producer was going.

マイ ハート -> Mai haato -> My heart
返す -> (kaesu) -> to return
Jason Hodgin the Japanese "マイハートを返す" actually means "return my heart". He's layered the English word "return" in between every few Japanese letters. So the while the English and Japanese aren't meant to interact with each other, they both mean the same thing (just with the Japanese being a bit more specific).

The thing with vaporwave is it’s how my nostalgia-filled cloudy mind tend to remember these songs(or similar-sounding songs) that I could have heard from a random Sunday radio or from an old movie. I don’t speak for everyone but it’s how it definitely made me feel. Takes me to simpler times. Plus for someone who was not born when these songs were released, these remixes are a really good way to know and appreciate the deep roots of music.
