  • Germans are being unfairly treated on MP? Nope, they just don't try to win.
Btw, while the Germans won Febraury, it too was a one-sided affair although not like June. My hope for close matches goes both ways.

so it is a bit like War Thunder AB, fighters get kills, but ground attack wins. Whereas in Il-2 it makes actually sense.
If I had more time, I would love to learn playing Il-2 and be a dedicated bomber/110.

An interesting video, Bismarck. You basicly described my first flyout on the Wings of Liberty server, flying high up above a ground target, and then getting pounced by 3 fighters while the target gets bombed. My excuse is that I was still trying to get the hang of flying in MP, and without a wingman it's not quite as easy. I'll try to incorporate some of your advice, and fly at 3-4k alt instead of any higher.

let's be honest. the German teams loose all of the time because most of them are idiots who believe they only way to be a good pilot is to sit at 6k and wait for the Russians to come to them
oh, and the fact that planes like the 109 E-7 and Fw 190 that were used as attackers a lot don't have access to 250kg bombs is also a factor

I think one solution for this is combat simulator games like this need to stop giving top points and trophies to shooting down enemy fighters and focus those more on completing missions, saving allies, and even just spotting and coordinating. I also think they should have penalties for just flying high in formation and doing absolutely nothing. One idea i have heard people say is that while you still will get points and XP, you will not get the trophies and bonuses if your team loses. That would encourage people to actually think and coordinate together.

When people look at these flight sims, they don't really care about being "le team contributors"; the average German player likely starts playing to become knights of the sky, engaged in 'honourable' duels with enemy aces. The average USSR player, however, probably has at least some interest in flying the series icon, which just so happens to be built for murdering ground targets; couple this with how the MiG-3 is the *only* high-alt fighter for early war, forcing USSR fighter pilots to go low, it's no wonder their bombers survive long enough to win matches.

I always found the "climb wars" you had going on in other games unrealistic and this is exactly the reason why.
Fighters are supposed to have a task, cover friendlys, kill enemy bombers or whatever. You cant do any of that flying 5k over everybody else. No matter how good of a K/D rate that gets you.
It doesnt help your side if you dont actually do anything useful.
And being useful just involves putting yourself at risk on ocassion.

    • @GrmlZGaming
      @GrmlZGaming 8 лет назад +28

Altitude or a focus on heavy bombers or other types is not about US or USSR, but the requirements of the theater of operations.
Air operations in the east were mostly about direct ground support, cas or protection of own troops against enemy ground attack planes. With a much lower focus on startegic bombing, as there was a front to worry about first and because of the huge size of russia often put strategic targets out of reach. (Berlin is much closer to london than moscow.)
The Airfields could be close behind the front lines, so the planes could be in the action fast. But that lead to air battles generally being on lower altitude.
And that is true for axis as well as ussr.
The same is true for USAAF/RAF units in the MTO, were air battles were also often fought at lower altidude for similar reasons and that is why the RAF could use P-40s there with their bad high altitude performence, while they were unsuitable for the European theater of operation.
Over western and northern Europe there were no frontlines with troops to directly support. Not since the fall of France till the Landings in June 1944, so the air battles were primarily strategic in nature, Long Range bomber raids, escorting them and intercepting them and with Airfield far away on different sides of the channel, so much time to climb.
By 1944 when there were frontlines again in france the luftwaffe was not strong enough anymore to do much direct ground support or challenge allied fighter bombers and therefore there was only very little airbattles at lower altitudes here.

I find ground attack painful in War Thunder RB's. In many games you start attacking ground targets and all your team is climbing and at last 6 km away. It only takes one or two enemies to spot you and you die and your team can't - and has no interest - in saving you.
It's especially bad as a German because no 190 or 109 is ever going to risk being low or at medium altitude.

    • @sturmbok
      @sturmbok 8 лет назад +5

I hear that. In almost all the flight games I have played, if you went out to support the troops you were on your own, due to the fact that almost all your other pilots were at 6-8k up, padding their k/d ratio. I always flew in at 3k down, even if in a fighter so I could help the boys in the mud or those flying bombers in support. Too many years playing the guy in the mud and needing support I guess, lol........

Thank you Bismarck for this video,
as a horrible fighter pilot but a decent Jabo pilot I'm usually sitting in a ground attack aircraft (or using my bomber as such, I'm a bad high altitude bomber as well). On the german side I'm first of all mostly alone, once reaching my target there is at least one russian fighter at low altitude that soon engages me, even though I often successfully drop my bomb(s) I rarely make it back to my airfield. On the russian side however I can often circle the enemy ground forces with my Pe-2 or Il2 until I run out of ammunition and still make it back to my base.

We managed to organise a collection of 6 He-111 bombers (without escorts), fly to a distant military warehouse and successfully bomb the place off the map in the wings of liberty server last week. Goes to show what can be achieved on rare occasions.
The only 109's and 190's we saw were masses of them at the airfield before launching our raid. As usual we saw none actually near us on the way to the target or actually over the target area. Thankfully the VVS didn't show up and all bomber made it home with only one seemingly favourite with the AA.
I've been flying online dogfight sims since Sierra online's Red Baron WW1 simulator created by the designer of the F-14 Tomcat way back in the mid 1990's so normally I fly fighters (and I'm a notorious fighter ace on countless online sims and have taught dogfighting aerobatic manoeuvres in the past plus simple dirty tricks to turn the tables). However Battle of Stalingrad the desperate need for bomber pilots has myself and fellow sim game fighter veterans flying bombers just to help the Axis side stand a fighting chance of maybe winning.
Lack of dogfighting skill amongst both side's fighters can be laughable. I mean how bad does a LaGG-3 player have to be to not be able to shake a He-111 loaded with bombs off of his ass for 2 minutes and then be shot down??
Yep, bombers also have to occasionally play as their own fighter escort it seems.
We usually fly in pairs, threes and rarely fours.
Best formations for bombers are tilted triangle and tilted diamond for defence so that all rear gunners have a clear shot of attackers behind the formation.
I'm yet to see Stukas form into a Luffberry ring for mutual defence like I've seen in over sim games in the past. BoS just doesn't have that level of player cooperation or tactical skills yet. Many players are on a steep learning curve having migrated for pseudo sims such as War Thunder.
Best tactic to adopt if alone and chased by a VVS fighter is to drop to the deck at tree top height, cut speed as slow as possible and wait for the attacking fighter to (A) crash, (B) overshoot and have his belly filled by the tail gunner or (C) chicken out and go away.
Slowing down decreases the time period the attacking fighter has you in his sights and can shoot. It also forces him to bleed off energy to the point that if, by some freak miracle, a friendly fighter comes to the rescue the hostile will have major problems.
We've seen yourself and Sheriff in some games so if you see a formation for Henkel's flying low and fast scaring squirrels then that'll be us.

From the many discussions in WT forums, medium altitude is up to 5-6km. I know this video is a year old but something like this happened to me while I was flying as the Germans in War thunder. During a mission, we were playing a map inspired by the Battle of the Bulge and almost all my team mates were in Bf 109s or FW 190s and I was in a JU-87 (I forgot the name but it was the AT model with the duel 37mm cannons). Now near the end of the game almost all my team mates except me were shot down yet we still won. Why? Because as predictable, all the fighters climbed high to try to BnZ each other meanwhile I was flying low and picking off the Allied tanks and pillboxes and nobody noticed me until it was too late. That's the problem with a lot of these combat flight simulators, most people wanna dogfight but the truth is there is more to warfare than being an ace.

When, a couple hours later, we came back, the first thing I heard was: 'Has anyone managed to take off, yet?'
Though, when I gave the demo a shot, I was able to take off, it soon became obvious the game was a good enough simulation to show up my limitations as a pilot (flying coördinated turns is really hit and miss with me) and I decided to concentrate fully on racing sims.

Good example of this: Took off the other night with a group of friends. Two Pe-2's being escorted by myself in a P-40 and one of my friends in a LaGG. About halfway to the target we encountered a pair of 109's and peeled off to go deal with them. They tangled with us very briefly and we gained an advantageous position over them. As soon as they realised this, they both seagulled straight for the Pe-2's and completely ignored us as they desperately tried to get their kills in before we killed them. We took them both out, no problem.
They had no interest in a fight. They simply wanted easy kills.

Can a person be another pilots gunner? In other games that allowed it I would pull tail gunner duty for folks and found it to be fun.

know my specs aren't the best but I can run games like War Thunder on

game is poorly optimized and no matter the settings I always get
    unstable fps and micro stutter.

May i also add that there are a lot of players playing Pe-2 and Il-2 while there arent a lot of Germans playing anything but fighters is also a factor because with the German Ground atackers you dont want to fly close to the ground before you reach the target. Up and high you have the advantage of seeing incoming fighters and your escort is performing much better, but to reach that point you have to invest a lot of time on getting height while being escorted, getting over the front and spot the target while being escorted and then decent or level bomb while still being escorted even if you are doing a steep dive.
With the russian planes you start, fly low atack and go home. The Pe2 is performing better on higher ground then the IL-2 but its sill easier to drop the bombs right on the heads of the enemy then dong a steep dive or set the instruments for level bombing

Very good points, I think that some try to make the "Novis" jump from WAR THUNDER to the IL2 flight type and as you may and have noted in this video the quality of pilots are just outmatched in skill and in tactics. Personally I would not attempt this game as the visual aspect of the game would make me a very easy target. Although I like the game from your videos better than the run and and die play style of WT, but I do not feel I would enjoy the skill level of this game. The style of the game is just what I would like to play I do not think I would be any good at the game. I do not have the HOTAS controls so it would be just outmatched in every way I think.

I agree. I fly at Wings of Liberty every day at German side. Im not a good bomber. I usually dive with 87 or 88. But situation has not changedfrom the time you made this video. Russians are still winning almost every scenario. Hope is coming. Yesterday there was a nice fleet of 111 but it was only like 3 planes so it could not be so effective. And other pilots messed their job --> blocking runways, not covering or destroying AA:s etc. Tactical Air War sounds good. I need to learn more so I can effectively fight there with my fleet. -S!

Flying He111 solo is not easy but you can certainly try to minimize the risk of interception by climbing to 4-5000 m on your way to the target and choosing to approach the target from zones where the enemy fighters will most likely be absent . Yes, the entire mission will take a while ( an hour or so ) but you should be able to return home like three out of four missions . That's what i do but it gets kind of boring after a while, i rarely fly solo these days, much more fun is to have a couple a friends with you and fly a formation of Heinkels :)

I started playing the russians and i still do because i'm not very good at boom and zooming. Flying fighters overall is very hard for me cause i need to be within 200 meters to efficiently identify targets. That's the main reason why i don't fly with german fighters as you have to be above your target and i tend to lose my target or i just simply can't identify whether it's friendly or foe. And if i do fly a fighter, it's mostly the LaGG-3 cause it's mainly a turnfighter (i think) and you have a good clear cockpit. If only i could identify targets and keep track off them in battle i'd be a excellent LaGG pilot cause i know how to turnfight very well. Warthunder doesn't teach you how to fly a plane, but it definitely teached me how to turnfight as the zero's are my favourite planes and i also learned some nice maneuvers by myself in wartunder, like the scissors. The last thing you want to do when you are fighting me is engage in a scissors cause i'm very good at scissors. Back in the day when i still played warthunder, i once won a duel against a Bf-109 when flying the P-47 after he started a scissors with me.

    @s.turner7144 5 лет назад

I'd say a mixture of many reasons. One big one are the Pe's super sniper gunners. If it isn't a pilot kill then it's almost definitely an engine kill.
I admit, Soviets are more organized and often have escorts, unlike axis does. I also feel that the damage model with certain Soviet planes is entirely exaggerated. Almost every fight I get into, i record. And i have plenty of examples of proof that Soviets have the upper hand by far.

textchat is never enough, nobody did an actual in-game voice system that is like it was back then with radios, no "flight command" no organisation, unless the players themselves decide to make a "clan" and do it...
because they want this to be a competitive game, NOT a cooperative one.
because competition fuels frustration and that fuels more gamers playing more or filtering themselves out, or going into micro-transactions like you can see in WT.
they don't know how to make it any other way...its their culture, and many other game dev team has this mentality as well.
its not a problem and there is no solution to it.
we can do it differently, which will come in time, and then these games will be a thing of the past.
great vid, learned from it, thanks!

    • @MartinPlanner2
      @MartinPlanner2 8 лет назад +2

also forgot to mention the lack of planes required for cooperation are scouts, heavy bombers, radiotowers, radartowers etc.
being able to take a role of a fast scout plane to go forward at 2-3km alt and mark where enemy planes are visible and it would stay on the map as a "report" with a time tag so everyone can see...even that would have a huge effect on efficiency and teamplay.
the only true results would be if on one server one team only cosist of one clan using one teamspeak and organizing and the opponent team as well. just like how they do it on ACG IL2:CLOD mission every saturday. and its clearly visible how much it adds and changes the outcomes and actual battlefields and engagements.

Most of you wont remember when IL2 first came out in 2001.
Situation was ecaxtly same back then.
I flew over 1200 missions in VEF 1 & 2 we flew always full swuadrons and even back then you really need to flew axis planes as they were supposed to use, mid-high alt boom&zoom and strict no no for turn&burn except early war bf f-series.
I flew in squadron which was back then one of the best by k/d but it was still a struggle to win later war scenarios when germany lacked ground pounders.and only choice was to go down trying to intercept .
In IL2 it was still pretty close in all those online wars i flew 200-2009, some 7000hrs.
What i found then that germany always got more soloing noobs who thinked FW190 or average BF109 can beat russian pilot in turn fight...
I flew also 2 years with russian planes, even early wars were eady to win ,even my beloved I16 i had like 30 mission strakes with no deahts as again ,axis side had so much more players who just didnt know how to use planes right....
Oh the years go so fast....but VEF was best what you could do with pants on if you loved WW2 aviation.
IL2 CoD was soooo boring and no decent online wars,
And IL2 BoS now, well, boring too....

Many players like to be the lone wolf and not the team player. They also know altitude is a great advantage and want the enemy to come up to them so they will be a sitting duck. As Richthofen said "Find the enemy and shoot him down. Anything else is nonsense."
Read more at: www.azquotes.com/author/12332-Manfred_von_Richthofen. Only through the hunting heart of the raptor can a fighter pilot achieve true success.
I have encountered this problem with other pilots before, nobody wants to fly a bomber, attack ground target or deliver parachutists to the target, thus they lose the game. Coordination of effort to various flights measured in ground targets destroyed as well as aircraft shot down should be the measure of success. In a word "Teamwork". Good analysis, nice charts too. Drive on Bismarck, I hope that we can fly together some day, I think we would do well together.

I'm flying mostly bf110 on the wol and the lack of sense for teamplay on the german side is really a big problem. Even if I beg for escort or if I'm asking fighters to clear the objectives from aaa, they don't bother. Everyone is out for a dive hunt on soviets. They don't get it, if someone's out on a bombing mission, the chance to be attacked near or at the objectives by soviet fighters is almost 100%. German fighters would only need to look after german bombers and they would definitely get their fight. It's getting frustrating playing like this all the time.

Given hypothetically equal numbers and coordination I'm curious how the Luftwaffles should go about defeating the Russians at low alt. Better players would be the obvious answer but playing well still means using your strengths against the enemy's weaknesses and I'm not sure what advantages the German planes have under those circumstances.
