As a Brit, i can attest Jess' Birthday traditions are the best and same as us! Pass The Parcel is an absolute classic!!! I cant believe Americans don't do it!!!
We do have a version played at Christmas or any time of the year it doesn’t have a name but is a huge ball of Saran Wrap filled with goodies - toy cars, pens, candy, money and just like Jess described we listen to Christmas music and pass to the person on the left around the circle when music stops you unwrap a layer and get the prize and continue passing it
I’m from the UK and you talking about the chocolate game and pass the parcel made me so happy knowing that Aussies do it as well!!
As a latina with a Mexican background we also celebrate Christmas Eve and we all wait until midnight to open gifts and the next day we eat leftovers which is the best and just chill at home or at a family members home where Christmas took place for leftovers lol. Also as Catholics wr celebrate the birth of Jesus and set up for it wr have a "nacimiento" and pray the day off and pass out "aguinaldos" candy bags for kids and all that.
Love that gabe is the translator everytime Jess says something Australian😂
19:55 im gonna need a longer version of Jess & Gabe singing Feliz Cumpleaños 🎊🥳 ,Feliz Navidad 🎄and Los Pollitos 🐣.
We do a similar thing to pass the parcel. You have a gift that’s wrapped together very difficult, many layers, some hard to take off tape etc. sit in a circle, you wear oven mits or snow nuts and try to in-wrap it. Everyone get a turn to roll 2 dice and as soon as you do, it’s your turn to unwrap the package rinse and repeat. Whenever someone rolls doubles they take their turn until someone else rolls doubles. Everyone rolls once then keep going around.
We do the same thing!
Yep my family does this too!
This video really goes to show that you don't have to have the same childhood experiences or culture to get along well together! Jess and Gabe just mesh well together and have the same personalities, despite their different upbringings, cultures and experiences growing up and just get along so well together!
True! But their values line up 😊.
Their personalities are different
@empea3837 yes, that too!
@sarahozonline yes, that's true, in the way that Gabe is really outgoing and Jess is more reserved. I suppose I meant that they are the same in the way they get eachothers humor and get along so well!
American citizen here and I grew up doing a lot of the same things as Jess! We celebrated Christmas on both Eve and the day with a big meal both days. We played that pass the parcel game at Christmas every year! I forget what we called it but it was the same idea! And we had hot dog stands outside of Home Depot! I grew up in the northeast so maybe it’s just common stuff for that area
It’s so wholesome how you guys would sing together ❤
I’m Venezuelan and we celebrate Christmas Eve too.. as in we have our family dinner that day, we dress up, we stay up late, and then the next day we meet and have arepas for breakfast and left overs and we just wear pjs and chill. We’ve been in FL for forever now but we still continue that tradition 🥰
I 100% agree with Jess with the flag situation.. it ruins the aesthetic and too patriotic lol
Coming from South Africa, we share ALL the same traditions as Australia! I can confirm, baked beans with breakfast is amazing. We don't do fairy bread though, I've tried it but its strange haha!
Oh we love our baked beans 😂❤🇿🇦
Love watching your podcast so so much
Thanks, Jess and Gabriel for always bringing smile to my face
Loved it, the singing in Spanish amazing. Jess’ entonation of “los pollitos” was very very good👌🏽. When singing she can fool some of us Spanish speakers
This episode is so cozy, esp when Jess talked about Easter Fest! Sounds fun!
The los pollitos song!!!! My Cuban grandmother used to always sing this to me! Thank you for reminding me of this! It made me so happy!!!
This was so good!! 😍😍
These videos have been the Highlight to my week! I
jess doing the adlibs to one thing was so true to the directioner heart, you can't sing it any other way!
love this episode! so cozy and fun! in new zealand we share many of the same traditions as australia so it was fun seeing the differences with america 😆 we also have fairy bread in new zealand but I’m with gabe - it’s so gross hahah
Lovely episode! We do pass the parcel in my family but we call it a grab bag! It’s a ball of individually wrapped up small Knick knacks (like those pens you spoke about)and you pass it around and when the music stops and the ball is by you, you unwrap a layer and get a prize! It’s such wholesome childhood fun!!
THAT SPANISH SONG! i was like “OH I KNOW THAT TOO!!!” so fun!
also thank y’all so much for your fun & real content. really-it’s always a favorite of mine to watch even though i’m in a much earlier stage of life than y’all! muchísimas gracias por todo!❤️
so interesting how all the party games Jess talks about really are a thing in Germany too!
As an American who has grown up in south Alabama, there was always a hot dog stand outside of our local Lowe's and I have great memories of going there with my dad in the middle of projects! It should definitely be a universal thing!
The way Gabe was wrapping his hands in his hoodie is too funny
I’ve missed out…ive never heard of watching movies on Christmas night! And we always had a big meal on Christmas day.(California)🎄..and never had a snowy Christmas but dreamed about it…Celebrating with relatives on Christmas Eve sounds really nice and staying in PJ’s all day on Christmas day sounds fabulous.
This is so fun to hear about! I’m from America, we live in the Midwest! I never grew up eating sweet potato casserole and I hadn’t heard of it until adulthood, I prefer my sweet potatoes prepared with savory spices. I also played pass the parcel growing up! It wasn’t a full tradition and I’m not sure if we called it that but I just remember playing it at like youth group parties!
I'm from New Zealand and we do similar things for Christmas.
Fairy bread chocolate game and pass the parcel is perfect. Also baked beans ❤❤❤
We grew up eating bread butter with sugar. I’m from the US, but my Christmas matches Jess. We did Christmas Eve with the main family appetizer sandwiches and decorate the tree. Then big meal and family on Christmas Day. And I don’t like marshmallows with sweet potatoes either. But it is so interesting all the different foods people eat at the holidays
I knew so many of those Australian traditions because of the show Bluey 😂
I just LOVEEEE when Gabriel sings and Jess is anneyed. Like, its sooo funny, I youuu guyz you make me laugh and smile a lot😅😌
36:28 Jess, we did have that when I was younger! And not just outside DIY stores. Only, it was usually hot dogs and brats. And I wish they would do that again.
Hahahahahhaa I love when y’all sing. So much fun. Never stop yahaha
I’m an American but I still stand with Jess on combining marshmallow with sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are great on their own and if you want to make it fancy, maybe throw in some pecans and cinnamon.
the wayyyyy I laughed with the cumpleaños feliiiizzzz I cant!!!!!
For my Christmas (Italian American in NY), we do the Feast of the Seven Fishes with one side of my family on Christmas Eve. Then on Christmas Day we open presents as an immediate family but have a big dinner Christmas Day with the other side of my family. So cool to hear how other people celebrate Christmas! 🎄
Omg the magpie thing and a few other things make certain parts of Bluey make sense 🤣
I’ve never been this earlyyy and IM LIVINGGG FOR THIS ESPIDOE
I’m from NZ and we have very similar traditions as Australia. Btw love Jess & Gabe ❤
the things i learned from this😂 this episode was great!
Totally agree with you Jess re cold Christmas..I lived overseas for 3 years and had cold Christmas…loved it. In Australia we still have the turkey etc but when it’s 40c+…it’s a bit much 😂
Love the 🏏 on Boxing Day.
5:08 jess’ eyes when she said “don’t start this argument” 😂
I live in Australia and I remember Easterfest! I don't know if I ever went, cause I was very little, but my aunties and uncle have good memories of that!
Love your channel 💕
Hi Jess, if you ever come back to visit South FL, there’s an Australian cafe called Byte & Coffee. It’s like 10 min. from Boca 🙂
We do not click off when y’all sing 😂 it’s hilarious
Ahhhhhh 😂los pollitos dicen pío Pío piooo 😂 that was hilarious, that song pops into my head too! I’m salavadorian American. Do more songs in spanishh 🙏🏼
My extended family and I play "Pass the Parcel" as our white elephant game during our Christmas gatherings! It is so much fun!
If you do ever end up playing pass the parcel, you must try it with oven mitts. The mitts are used when it is the persons turn to open the parcel.
So pass the parcel’s basically musical chairs but with gifts😂 also the chocolate one does sound a bit bizarre lol, I don’t get that one tbh
in wisconsin we have brat frys outside of our stores which is similar to a sausage sizzle
As a Mexican- American we celebrate Christmas Eve more than we do Christmas. Sounds bazar but Christmas Eve is the party, dinner, games, and before midnight hits we pray as a family because of baby Jesus birth and then we open presents right after. If I’m in Mexico it’s a whole different story 🫠🕺
Our Home Depots in Michigan have a hot dog stand at the entrances! It’s the BEST! They call it “Franks again!” 😂 I thought they were everywhere!
Definitely ate chocolate sprinkles on buttered bread as a kid. It is a Dutch thing to eat Hagelslag on bread. So good!
Hahaha yess🤝🏻
Me, an American who loves bluey, wanting to do pass the parcel at my daughter’s first birthday in a couple months 😆
Yep, from the US and we celebrate extended family exactly like Gabe on Christmas Eve. We would ALWAYS, still do, go to the movies on Christmas Day.
Jess you forgot to mention other traditional Australian party food party pies and sausage rolls, honey joys, chocolate crackles, mini “boys” lol. Also after singing happy birthday and the hooray part we jokingly sing - why was she or he born so beautiful why was she or he born at all….
Party games, pass the parcel and musical chairs
“Los pollitos”. Is a BOPPPPP!!!!!!
Gabe!!!! No one would have toast with sprinkles... that sounds terrible!
Always has to be fresh bread
I tried making your Greek yoghurt chicken and pita bread recipe you vlogged a few months ago and it was DELICIOUS! Would love the cookbook for Christmas to keep expanding my recipe inventory 🩷🌲
at my local hardware store in Oregon (it’s size is equivalent to lowe’s & home depot) has a hotdog stand out front!
Yea I say “and many more” at my best friend’s party and sometimes when we were kids adults would sing “how old are you now” while the bday kid screams their age lol
My family has always done “pass the parcel” but we call it the wrap game or wrap a bunch game! Been my favorite since I was little:)
Lol the weather never stopped me, in high school we’d have the option to eat inside or outside and I loved eating outside even when it snowed 😂
My mum did another version of pass the parcel when we were younger, she would put pieces of paper in between layers and you would have to do the thing written on it- for example, jump like a frog, sing a song, do 10 pushups etc 26:10
I'm glad Jess mentioned Canada. I'm Canadian and a fan of your podcast. Watching all the way from Richmond, British Columbia!
We do have something similar to pass the parcel. I’m not sure what it’s called but we play it during Christmas. You have a Saran Wrap ball full of prizes. You can play where the players have disadvantages like only being able to use one hand or they wear mits. I haven’t played with a timer but the person beside you has dice and your time is up when that player beside you rolls a double on the dice then they get the ball and hand the dice to the next person. It’s a lot of fun
Idk abt y’all but replayed the break into song parts at least 10x… I live for those moments lol
The second a wife/girlfriend tried to say “tone it down babe” is the moment they tone it up. Hahahah
Growing up, (I’m 25 now for reference) Home Depot and Lowe’s used to have the hot dog and burger stand right out front! It was always fun to tag along with my dad as a kid and grab something to drink and eat after wandering the hardware store! They used to also have ice cream vending machines right by the exit too those were the good ol days. They should bring this back!
This weather TN has been having makes me feel the exact same way
The only reason I know about pass the parcel is because my daughter watches Bluey 😂 I will definitely start doing that for her birthday parties!
i literally look forward to sfsg every sunday. it’s my comfort podcast🤍
You guys freaking out about "Gordita" it's hilarious lol it's not exclusively Cuban, but latinos use that term a lot, and it's as lovely as "bobby" or "hubby" or "baby" etc, all the cute nicknames you guys have for people you love, it's not that heavy haha Love you guys, so interesting to get to know different cultures.
I’m from Scotland and my high school done muck up day… the year before I started the leavers brought cows into the school teachers weren’t happy 🤣🤣🤣
Oregon girlie here! we also have no sales tax! i’ve never lived anywhere else so the thought of that is so crazy to me!
one of my Christmas traditions is, i like to watch Jeff Dunham's Christmas Special every Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and i've done that every year for a few years now.
We have something in New York called Kingdom bound and it’s like Easter fest…. It’s at a place called Darien lake (which is like a huge family water park) and people camp there for 3 days while Christian bands/artists play
Came so close to snotting in my food when Jess started reading her FB status🤣 reminded me of myself at that age
We also have baked beans for breakfast in the uk
Jess! Here in Nashville we have “Winter Jam” and it’s a huge concert with a bunch of Christian artist!
Jess went off on that Facebook status 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I'm with Jess on the baked beans on toast 🤭
37:32 I've worked at home depot and the days the managers did hotdogs outside was the days with the happiest customers 😅
i'm from the US & in my family we do a big dinner on christmas day that's very similar to the meal we have on thanksgiving! like gabe, we do spend christmas eve with my extended family but there's no big meal. just desserts. definitely stay in our pjs all christmas day!
Clicking off? I started dancing hahah
fairy bread is the best.we also have a christmas tradition in Australia.we have a christmas pudding and when you make it we put coins in it,served with custard and you maybe be lucky enough to get a coin(money).for birthday parties we do a butterfly cake, kids parties we play musical chairs.would love to have a white christmas in australia.
It is so wild that most Australian traditions are literally the same here in South Africa - love it though!!!🤭
We do muck up day in Scotland! Unfortunately my year didn’t get to do it 🙄
Yess here in canada we say and many moreeee at the end of the birthday song
And in Michigan at Home Depot and Lowe’s there used to always be someone making hotdogs!!
OMG Jess watches MONK?!? Love her even more!!
On our birthday tradition we sing the regular bday song American, and then we add …. “ and many more with Scooby doo on channel 2, and a big fat lady on channel 80”
Fairy bread is the bombbbbb
Sorry Jess, but I think it's hilarious when Gabe sings hhahaha. I had to crack up so much when he mimicked his family singing
Wow i totally forgot about hawk Nelson lol good band
In Canada - we have hotdog stands outside our hardware stores, The Canadian Tire!
Big YES to the baked beans for breakfast and I’m Mexican 🙌🏼
Great podcast mr & mrs conte....love from india ❤️🇮🇳
We do not click off when you start singing 😂
