This is not a startup, it's just a smart work. Plates and cutlery made up of dry leaves are part of our Indian Culture since years. Every wedding, social gatherings or any holy food feast used to have ritual of serving foods in this type of leafy cutlery and even now also we do the same. As I said, this is the smart work done by the startup maker.
My grand ma used to stitch the plate in village they used 10 to 12 years back ..after the paper plates came …they are also stopped stiching living style changed all are having in paper plates only
Exactly... I just wanted to say this..... It's our folk knowledge which is getting commodistiesd. Even today it's used in certain functions in my village.
A suggestion: you should provide the name and details of the people(in the videos). That will make it easier for us as well as for them(they can get more customers).
in our villages such plates were used for ages. they used to sew the leaves just like its shown in the video and soak them in starch water which usually was rice starch or tapioca starch water and then dry it in the sun. the dried starch would give some sturdiness to the plates. these plates were either fed to cattle or composted with cow manure after use. just a suggestion to these plate makers. they can try using a combination of edible gum also called "Gond" and vegetable starch to stiffen after sewing these leaves. instead of using cardboard. they can use this edible gum and vegetable starch glue between 2 plates and stick them together and then put them in molds to cut it into whatever cutlery they want. Also old jaggery when boiled for long and dried becomes very hard. using old jaggery and Gond was a common "Waterproofing" for roofs in village homes. similar technique can be used for making cutlery too without having to use cardboard. Another alternative would be use coir sheets. coir is a very sturdy material that comes from the waste of coconut trees. making coir sheets and attaching the leaves to it would also give sturdiness to the cutlery. bamboo scraps left after making bamboo furniture or just shredding bamboo into very thin strings too can be used just like coir to support the leaves and make the cutlery sturdy. Even the loofah from the loofah gourd can be used in like coir. coir, bamboo, plant loofah are all sustainable plant products and "reusable" . the loofah sponges can be used multiple times if you wash them thoroughly after use and dry them in the sun. so sheets made out of loofah can also be used in place of cardboards. our country consumes millions of coconuts every year. so much can be done with coconut shells. All palm trees shed a tough yet flexible sheet like layer as they grow. these sheets are naturally waterproof. if we strongly decide to stop plastics, for a country like ours with so many resources it wont be difficult. but we all should consciously and aggressively do so. Cardboard again is paper derived from cutting trees. I would encourage these people to try and use only plant based glues with "Sustainable" plant products like coir and bamboo strings and improvise on their products.
Great ideas shared. Keep up the good work always. If can provide assistance for people interested in startup with feedback of raw materials, truly will be of great help.
Before 90s there were plates made of sal tree leaves hugely used into occasions like wedding etc.. but then paper plates came and the styrofoam plates.. and now those old traditional plates are coming back.. .. i appreciate this 💕
Sir,I am from Paschim Medinipur district of west bengal, here many sal trees are seen in this area. The people of the village here pick the leaves of that tree and sew them to make plates bowls with different Designs. There is a huge demand for this leaf plate bowl in these areas. These things are used in all kinds of occasions here. These customs have been going on for many years. Thank you
at 0:20 the startup name is VISTARAKU (its the name given to food serving leaf stitched plates across temples and marriages in south india) and not vistakaru..
I think in every state some kind of leaf based plate was used mostly for religious purposes and ceremonies… then we switched to plastic… Same with toilets… even though Indian toilets are better for posture we started preferring commode
Great initiative to reduce plastic 👏🏼👏🏼 One suggestion: Please avoid using plastic to pack the cutlery 3:12. It destroys the purpose of Vistaraku. Thank you and keep up the good work 👍🏼
Areca leaves also offer a natural and ecofriendly option for disposable tableware, making them a great choice for those looking to reduce their environmental impact
Government should take initiative for mass production. The plastic containers used by restaurants and railways must be replaced with these kind of ecofriendly products
As I said in another comment in a recent video - people in America are often arrogant about use of plastic and styrofoam, preferring to keep it up as a practice, and not consider the consequences. We are now drowning in our own garbage, if you see my meaning. So anything like this which can reduce waste, create value, and help the environment must be wonderful. I send you a big hello from New Orleans.
Hello 👋,Thank you ma'am ,in India, using leaves such as banana, lotus, teak etc leaves for serving or paking food is common since ancient times. Still, this custom is followed in some rural areas or temples. From recent years, plastic usage is very common and degrade the environment and ecosystem badly.😢
The plates from areca leaves are strong and durable. they are also leakproof and can even be used for microwave cooking. the products from such leaves should be encouraged. More innovative products from such leaves can replace the packaging of plastic products.
It's great to see that a traditional practice that was very common in the past is revived and made relevant to the contemporary times with the help of innovative approach and modern technology.
It's a Nepali culture where plates are made from leaf of Saal tree, so you'll find such kind of plates and katora's/ doney in nepal. It's widely used in puja, marriage feast and vratband 🇳🇵 .
What about the use of cardboard that too comes from trees, still trees are cut to make these or are they using only leftover leaves . Like this idea is great but what about if this is produced in large quantity then we need to pluck out more leaves .
Solution is present now. It is not popular maybe because it is slightly more costly. Cup and plate made from sugarcane fibre waste and from paddy straw are now available.
Thank you sir for sharing this video in youtube and give us a chance to know about this great people who are actually doing something good for our nature... and good wishes for them for doing such great things to save our nature🙏🙏🙏
Anuj bhaiya aap bahut acchi video's banate hain. Jo kaafi inspiring hoti hai, aur nature ko safe karne ka message bhi deti hai. Aaj hum sabhi ko apne puraane dino ki taraf jaana hi hoga. Jaise : a) pattal par khana villager's khaya karte the, aur mitti ke glass mein pani bhi piya karte the. Usse stomach ki koi problems nahi hoti thi aur bio di gradable bhi hoti hain yeh product, jisse koi garbage nahi banta. Hum khud apne mamaji ki shaadi mein leaf se bani crockeries aur mitti ke glass mein khana khaye hain. Leaf ki bani cutluries aur crockeries abhi nahi hain aur iska alternative steel ke cutluries aur crockeries hain, jo re usable bhi hain, aur isse koi wastage bhi nahi hota. (B) Hema malini ka aqua guard hata kar steel ka water filters ko use Karen toh waste bhi ganerate nahi hoga and it is re usable also. (C) Steel se bane tiffins ko carry karna chahiye jisse koi wastage nahi banta, aur re usable bhi hai yeh sab. Steel ke crockeries and cutluries are best option to replace plastic from India 🇮🇳. Slowly and steadily it will be replaced but we have to understand why our ancestors gave more importance to reusable and bio- degradable products.
In Bengal we still have shal leaves thali n katori, sometimes with banana leaves put inside. We eat daal on it, no such leakage. A bit more costly, that's why people choose paper, plastic, or reusable ceramics in place. But they r still in use and food tastes differently delicious in those plates 😋
We call it pattal in Bihar. Traditionally, pattals have been used on many different occasions to use as a plate to serve food. Just like in south they prefer banana leaves in Bihar we use pattal.

A cardboard piece is used here. And on the top of it, the leaf coating is done. Don't you guys think that this cutlery is made majorly out of cardboard? And in the name of eco friendly only leaf is added on top....

I'm really happy watching this video. I see so many things for which i feel bad but i do not take any action. Here they saw the problem and also worked on it. Insha Allah i hope, i also work on the problem which i see is bad.
I hope they can improvise it by bonding leaves using maida as bonding agent. Though it is bad for health, but it is still good bonding agent & better than any adhesive in the market
It's called Patravali in Maharashtra... Traditionally plates and bowls/drona made up of leaves was common in weddings and Puja where the whole village might turns up.

This should be promoted by government. Also use of plastics in food industries (for packaged and processed food) needs to be curbed. Citizens require to buy everyday essentials which are provided to us packaged in plastics. We don't have any other options. Reforming policies are required to save our world from plastic.
Vistaraku tree is very common in Telangana. They are affordable, durable too. They dont decompose for long time if you keep them dry. Vistaraku was used for serving food in all occasions

True. I’m surprised how no one gives credit to the age old practise

Right bro I also noticed same think
U can't completely reduce plastic use ...but u can reduce them 😊
Right bro I also noticed same think🤔
Yes sir you are right but right now, plastic is the only way to keep the plates clean and untouched post production.
Really. ...old is gold.....traditional things are going to have new forms....👏👏👏👏
