- Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the old cello I adopted actually appeared on a 1962 episode of the Jack Benny Show, with the original owner, Johnny Fresco. Fresco was a Dutch tenor saxophonist (and cellist!) who befriended legends like Louis Armstrong and Coleman Hawkins when he played all over Europe in the 1930s. He escaped Nazi Europe (with this same cello), performed and recorded with Harry James, and, later in his career, led bands for Tom Jones, Donna Summer and others. Oh--and he played his cello on an episode of Jack Benny, seen here. I am taking good care of his cello...
"At 12%, who's in a hurry?"
The kid cracks me up!
😂 I LOVE TO WATCH AGAIN THIS , EVEN I WATCHED 5 TIMES. 👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Great story about the Cello.. This episode is filled with truly Great comedy, unlike much of the vulgar "so-called" comedy of today. It's good folks like you that preserve the wonderful and creative humor of the Great Jack Benny for many of us. You help him "live" on and on...
Thank you very much for posting this.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👏👏👏👏👏👏👏I love all his shows.
I MISS THIS BOY .
SO SO SMART HE IS 🧑🎓👍👍👍👍
Anyone remember Jack saying "Maurice bring me my violin." I had the absolute pleasure of knowing a European refugee named Maurice Borge(?) who was part of the JB orchestra as well as the NY Metropolitan Orchestra. I believe he might have appeared on the early Television episodes. I would love to see pictures of him he and his wife Julia were absolutely wonderful and loving people.
addendum; Wow, many thanks to the person who liked my comment. It made me look at the episode again and I am thrilled, the second chair violinist disapproving of Mr. Benny's musical ability is my dear friend Maurice Bourg. Maurice also told me I reminded him of his brother in attitude and also being a sax player. I wonder if Johnny Fresco was Maurice's brother.
ps: Thank you so much for like to my reply anonymous person. It was really great to watch and see a man I really was fond of.
Pure genius..
This is absolutely hilarious. That's all I've got to say.
Jack played pretty good there. I love the totally convincing laugh track. I think I should have joined the laugh track operator union because
I think I could make the laughs even louder. But, when it comes to totally convincing, the laughter of Don Wilson at the end was so believable.
The kid's name is Barry Gordon born in 1948, who today is 41yo, 2 years older than me.
Jack played alongside Isaac Stern at Carnegie Hall - it was both good and hilarious. He was given a special award for his fundraising activities, and his acceptance speech was even funnier.
Love me some Benny! Watch every morning before work to get my mind right for the day :) :)
Mel was the voice of "Polly" for years, on radio and TV [and when Jack often introduced Mel on TV, he reminded viewers that he was "Polly", the "railroad station announcer", "Professor LeBlanc", "Si" (the Mexican), and "The Maxwell"].
This was brilliant comedy. Very original and cleverly done
Why was I not surprised that the young boy who played Jack as a kid turned out to be a California politician? lol! The skits that Jack and Company put together were the best. When I was a kid Sunday Nights were the Jack Benny Program followed by General Electric Theater hosted by Ronald Reagan, then Playhouse 90 which performed live broadway plays
I was a television addict back in the day because the shows were that good! Only like 3 channels but an incredible selection of talent
Who played the kid ?.....what is his name ?
@@helbitkelbit1790 that kid was Barry Gordon, a talented child actor who had a pretty varied and extensive career in TV from the time he was about 3 y/o. He is still around, had a talk show at one time and was involved in voice acting also. Not sure about the politician angle in real life, I was being facetious, lol. I'm sure he could have been, no doubt!!
@@catherinehazur7336 thank you Miss Catherine
Actually, this episode, "Musicale", originally aired on February 19, 1961 (restaged from a live 1953 episode). Mabel Albertson portrays "Mrs. Benny"; Jack, his own father.
Benny Rubin appeared in vaudeville at the same time Jack did- and they were VERY good friends {as Jack was with Mel, and George Burns}. In later years, Jack saw to it that Benny had supporting parts on his radio and TV shows....
As was mentioned, Mabel Albertson played Mrs. Benny. She is the sister
of actror Jack Albertson. She usually played the motherly type or the
nosy neighbor. She was so good at her craft she could really make you
mad at her. She played on the "Andy Griffith" as Howard Spragues. I have
saw the young actor who played Jack, but can't place where.
mother.
The man who was left out in the cold is actor Benny Rubin. He
played in many of Jacks skits along with Mel Blanc.
Barry Gordon play Jack as a child.
And Mother Stephens!
"Oh, Papa... You're sick..."
John Spencer: I hope you see this! I just now saw your comment, and am so happy you posted!! Two of my brothers are jazz musicians--drummers--and when I found my cello a few years ago, and heard that it belonged to a jazz musician, I knew it was meant to be. I did quite a bit of research, and may have found some things about Johnny Fresco that you might not know. Feel free to reach out again. I was thrilled to find this video (through a combination of IMDB, Ebay and tenacity!)--Christy Bishop
Do you know the name of the song they are playing in this Jack Benny clip?
Paderewski, minuet in g
Wow! This is amazing,Johnny Fresco is my grandfather! I have searched many times for something like this with no luck, great job! I know my father is going to love this! It definitely looks as though his old cello has found the person who was meant to have it! Where did you find the video? Very cool! Thank you!
The young kid who played Jack was a recent California Congressman!
Who played young Jack Benny? He was AWESOME and I think he once played Jack Benny's attorney too.
@@charliecharlie6387 I believe it is Barry Gordon. I remember him from Fish and Archie Bunker's Place.
You're supposed to tell us his name when you have that information, ya big tease.
@@mu99ins Ha ha, not intentional! Just a name I could not recollect then. He is Barry Gordon.
@@charliecharlie6387 He is Barry Gordon. Actually, he played agent/lawyer to a young boy who was auditioning for a role and giving Jack Benny a difficult time. One of the show's funniest episodes "Jack casts for TV Special" in 1961. That episode had two classic moments - Barry Gordon meeting Jack Benny and "Mildred Homquist" - you have to watch it to know the context! Hilarious!
Isn't that the guy from "Fish"? Or is he the kid that had a number one hit song "all I want for Christmas is my two front teeth"?
anyone notice Mel Blanc as the parrot?
NOW JACK YOU KNOW YOU CAN DO BETTER ON THE VIOLIN...IT'S THE ONLY THING YOU KNOW.TONY HAS SPOKEN.
