I remember watching Guna in Devi Paradise theatre Chennai almost after one or two months of it's release. As Santhanabharathy Sir mentioned it is a good movie, critically acclaimed, but commercially it didn't do well. Unlike now, then there were not enough screens or major release across the country or world wide. Also, what's the time of release also matters and what other movies were pitted against it, affects the box office result of a movie. One more issue was censor board certification for the movie. Guna was certified 'A' for its theme ( usage of drugs etc. ), bit violence etc. which had an effect on its box office collection. Thalapathy starring Rajinikanth and Mammootty and directed by Maniratnam released along with Guna that year for Deepavali festival. This movie had huge expectations because of the actors, director and music director ( Ilayaraja Sir again). Songs were chartbusters even before the release. Though it wasn't a regular commercial mass masala movie of Rajni, the screenplay, performances of lead actors, direction made more people to watch Thalapathy than Guna. Actually, Thalapathy had more violence because the story revolves around a gangster and his right hand, but they somehow escaped with U/A certificate. Some of the reviews in magazines at that time pointed it out. So, that's the reason Thalapathy was a blockbuster hit and Guna tanked at the box office. Some of the Kamal's movies will live forever in the minds of audience. So, he generally doesn't feel much if the movie didn't do well at the box office and move on. When he gets a blockbuster hit and huge collection for his home production, he used to put that money back to produce couple of other movies, which might do well or at times, it used to be commercial failures. I am sure if Guna gets re-released now, after digitally re-mastered and enhanced, it will do well.
If they could make such good movies like Guna, they would have! Mani Ratnam's last best was Thalapathi. The rest are just money-minting bunch relying on the herd fanbase and social media lunatics.

Yesterday I re-watched guna which I have watched when I was a kid. Obviously I was able to appreciate it better now. It was way ahead of its time. For me the best part was using continous shot to show the landscape of the area. I noticed that in the home/brothel, Temple , deserted church at the top of the hill. Camera work was brilliant.
