Everyone should always improve themselves. Everyday, all day we are a work in progress attempting to become the people we promised we would become. When one looks at the institutional racism that is prevalent in the US and other countries it is unacceptable that these things need to be addressed. Life is ever changing, and people are very adaptable and flexible and so they need to recognise this, things have to improve.
Thank you very much for this calm presentation of your research of racial biases, Professor Eberhardt. I have started your book: it is written kind and personal with a very high standard of science. Your book is especially interesting to me as a European. I do not fully understand all the not so obvious American biases about colour of skin. But as Europeans we have our own diverse sets of biases against each other even though we may look the same ... Thank you very much! Kind regards and much success with everything you research!
I have seen first hand racial bias by well meaning kind teachers. As an outsider I has horrified and saddened. I volunteered at my child’s very ethically diverse high achieving elementary school. I hope there’s real momentum for your book and your insights.
Jaded Optimist I don’t understand your comment, my comment had nothing to do with my child, and wether they get A’s or B’s. My point was that I saw first hand black children disciplined more harshly than white students., in kindergarten and beyond!!! And that ultimately I do not believe that the teachers and staff were/are racist, but that racial bias probably contributed to the teachers/staffs actions. Btw I’m neither black nor white, but I can still see when someone is getting treated unfairly.
I wish they would’ve cut off the comment feature of this video. Too many people will never understand racial bias because they themselves are beneficiaries of it.
Know how to offend a racist saying racist things? Call them racist. I guess people simplify or outright deny uncomfortable things but racial bias is real and it's affecting people in real ways.
Truly interesting topic. I was able to identify myself within her descriptions of unconscious bias situations, whereas you may not realize completely, that you are.
Honestly the bias may be caused or contributed to severely by the approach typically seen from the group. Aka sleeping in class may be propogated by completely different reasoning in theory between the two, and that can change response a ton. If I thought a kid were just tired, versus if I thought they were doing it to show they don't have to listen, then the punishments change. Sadly stereotypes are often not just a societal but a representation of typical behaviors...

Also them associating a pattern make me wonder if you investigated how often these patterns occur. Disruptive children are a huge threat to a teaching environment, and if they associate a pattern because it typically presents itself, that's not bias but observation.
@ I get that there are observations being made but that is different than being biased. I don't think we should conflate the two words. It is biased when people generalize instead of being discerning. Stereotypes are true to a certain extent, but when you apply that to EVERY person within a group that is definitely a bias.

@@littlegothgirl8869 Indeed, but in a hypothetical situation there is little choice. The problem with a researcher coming in with assumptions is that they bias the test. It's not like they know more about Darnell or Greg than what they can extrapolate from the names, so they can't individualize them. So taking it as a source of bias, without accepting bias comes from a lack of data... Which in turn points to the flaw in the study as well, since it also extrapolates about the teachers with no greater data.
How? That's not what she's saying at all. If the white student and black student both misbehaved in the same way, people who are not black are biased towards the white student and punish him less severely than the black student. The black one gets punished more because our stereotypes take over judgment and really thinking if this student deserves a bigger punishment because he did something so bad. That's what she was getting at.
U fortunately biased racism does exist in schools and the work place. If you spend more time with people of your own race than those outside your race that is biased racism.

There will be racial bias until such time as the black community gets its act together and earns the respect of other races. Respect is earned, not given.
As for the foot pursuit policy, bias and race had nothing to do with the implementation of the new policy. It was put in place to protect officers from possibly life threatening situations. Bias would be the last thing in an officers head if they find themself in a situation where they are alone with a fleeing suspect who can quite possibly kill them. They would react on adrenaline and instinct. A call for backup and a perimeter can greatly reduce risk for both the officer and the suspect no matter the color or even the setting.

Both assumptions are made on a faulty, superficial observation.

First of all, prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior is the definition of racism. Second, 12-14% of the population commits more robberies and murders than the +60% of population without considering the population sizes, which just makes it all the worse. And its comparably understandable why the prison population may be so high. Third, actual racism in the work place is highly illegal and the only "bias" in that system that's on purpose today is really in the favor of most "minority" groups.
