what i find so incredibly chilling about sober(aside from its powerful message) is that Demi LITERALLY APPLIED WHAT JOE JONAS(as Shane Gray) SAID IN CAMP ROCK 10 YEARS AGO. "So here's some advice. I mean that was kinda clear back then too.
The fact that she wrote this after her relapse and wrote about her real experience with addiction makes this song super powerful. I've been battling addiction for way too long and she nails it with these lyrics.

She absolutely does. The longest I have been sober is four months. I can't seem to stop, no matter how hard I try, and I have been battling 6 years now, this alcoholism. This song makes me cry. Along with Dancing With the Devil. Unless you've lived it, you won't get it. People that haven't lived it don't get how hard it actually is to overcome. Luckily I haven't lost my job, or apartment or anything like that over it, but there have been times I have wondered it I was going to.

@David Fraga the reason it'll never be better than the original is because Demi wrote it. The song itself is hers, the words come from HER heart, and it's HER emotions and experience. That's why it'll never evoke the same feeling when someone else sings it. Plus, this is a song about addiction, relapse, drugs, and that's a kid singing it. She's clearly never experienced the words from 'Sober', so there's a huge disconnect.

A few months ago i lost my best friend. He had bipolar troubles and bad alcohol and drugs habbits. He was constantly fighting against it but his disorder was too strong and he took his own life back. This song always made me think of him and now that he is gone its so painful to listen to it... I know that now he is not tormented anymore but i miss him everyday of my life and will always til my last breath. This song is a tribute to people who are in difficulties with drugs and alcohol and health issues in general... This is for you Ben, you will never be forgotten i promise :(

I know it sounds cliché but life is worth living and even when you are feeling so low that you think there is no escape, just remember that you will never be alone, you have your best friend, and maybe your family as well... there is always somebody to rely on when you are feeling bad. Suicide might feel like a solution when you are desperate but trust me it does soooo much damage on the people who remains after your death (family, friends etc). I couldn’t say goodbye to him and the loss and pain is something I have to live with now and it’s not easy every day. I am a counselor in a drug and alcohol treatment facility and my group wanted to find a song I think they would relate to. So I came straight to this song. My clients were in tears because many related to it. The men and women had tears flowing. It's such a deep song. It makes me wish my mom would say these things to me. But I'm not losing hope. Recovery is possible. Don't judge the addict, you don't know what they have gone through.

I was in my umpteenth treatment center 4 years ago, surrounded by others struggling to change when our councilor played this same song for us.

‘sober’ has to be one of the most saddest songs demi has ever released and recorded. it actually breaks my heart, one of the hardest songs i’ve ever listened too. it’s crazy to think this would’ve been their last song released. i thank god that demi is still here today, i don’t know what i would do without them. i’ve been a fan since 2011. i love them so much :(

It’s okay to express your opinion but you have to be mindful that words can have a detrimental effect on someone. I don’t think Demi will ever read this but I’ve been sober five years and everyday is a battle and we do relapse and we do fall but we get up and after the shame and hurt we move on and start over and we do it all again. Love you Demi. I’m 53 years old and your music moves me and motivates me

I am not addict to alcohol but I feel this song in a very deep way. I am still not sober from my demons and I wonder if I will ever be. Thank you Demi for standing for me when I could not. Skyscraper saved me in so many ways it is hard to explain. You gave me the voice I did not have. I will always thank you for being there, even if just with your music. That is true for some things, but addiction in particular is a complex problem, not an easy fix. When dealing with ANY mental issue, you're going to struggle with always staying in control of yourself, especially when times get tough. People with mental disorders have difficulty coping with emotional problems and sometimes end up slipping back into old patterns/behaviors that make them feel better (for the moment). There is no "excuse" per se, but there IS an explanation for it... and people just aren't perfect. The most they can do is keep trying.
Demi Lovato will ALWAYS be my favorite singer because she doesn't hide. Her songs are real and you can hear her pain. Her songs help SO many people not just addicts, even addicts loved one's and others too. She is amazing, addict or not.

Quiet 993 I am not saying this in a rude way but I knew exactly what she meant but sober I thought it was very brave of her to come out with this documentary not just to see what happened to her but to admit that even after she almost died and had heart attacks and strokes she came out and did it again and she’s even saying that she’s not giving up all drugs that’s how much a drug drug and drugs that you like can take your life because you don’t feel like you have a life when you’re not using them it changes your brain I’ve seen it and I give her kudos for speaking her truth and not getting up there and say a lie that she’s sober now I’m really proud and I think she’s a very strong woman I am a wonderful singer and she had a little bit of a warped way of thinking about she would get justice for what a man did to her being raped twice but that’s how she thought she had the power back. I felt bad for her at that point the most but she realize at least that that wasn’t going to heal her I really hope she makes it long-term

this song emotionally impacts me, im a nursing student who's is 22. my dad died a year into my program at 21 and I found him... I had to do CPR on my dead father although I knew he was dead. this song helps me understand that although he was addicted to both narcotics and alcohol I still forced myself to love him and I still to this day love him.. I'm upset about what happened due to my knowledge and me telling him what could happen but at the same time I understand. I don't want to let him go but he was gone before I could help. thank you everyone and NF and Demi for understanding and becoming my inspiration..I will not become addicted although I was born with a pre-mediation to become an addict. this song especially showed me the problems I would face. thank you Demi and everyone to help

There are so many die hard demi fans, and that's why she will make it through this, because she knows she's not alone. She is the voice of an addicted generation, I think it's time to open up about addiction and stop treating it like a choice, and more of an illness. Relapse doesn't have to be a part of recovery, but it does happen to a lot of people. The important thing is to keep working towards getting and staying sober. I'm 8 years sober without a relapse, but I stay very aware that it's a possibility the moment I ease up on my program. I'm happy you got there, and keep going :)

As someone who’s been been around addiction my whole life, in my family as a nurse, as someone who ran social housing, and around rehab programs for over 35 years, you see a lot of mental health being the core of these problems. And one is the belief system. Once one realizes that enabling yourself is not the answer then things can change. Knowing its not a disease first of all, that its an addiction, is the first step. The amount of enabling that goes on in todays society is one of its major downfalls. Owning your stuff instead of shift blaming is priority. Being around addiction my whole life, I know myself i have addiction issues. But i choose to go in a different direction. Unfortunately, not everybody has the mental power to be able to do that. Even I fail at times and take a day and just eat everything in site. But I get back up because for me, i can. Unfortunately many cant. That does not make them less valuable people.
