- As night falls on certain beaches around the world, the waves glow with an eerie blue light, neon dots that make it look as though stars are washing up on shore.
What you’re seeing is actually millions of microscopic organisms called bioluminescent phytoplankton.
Some of the most spectacular photographs have been captured from one location, Vaadhoo Island, Maldives, which has been nick named the sea of stars.
The Maldives is a tropical nation in the Indian Ocean composed of 26 ring-shaped atolls, which are made up of more than 1,000 coral islands.

I'm a native maldivian from what I know the bioluminescent or ("reddan" something like this, maldivian name ) usually are seen after a storm because there confused after all the shaking by the rough waves and washed up at the beach. I already seen a lot of this when I was a kid but now it's rare. You can still find them though got to have the perfect timing.

I did had the experience of swimming into a fluorescent sea during night time🤯. And yes, it is mind blowing 🫢. I lived more than 28 years by the sea and I only experienced this 2 times in my life.

I am so lucky to witness this phenomenon in Atulayan Island, Sagñay, Camarines Sur, Philippines! The bioluminescent planktons glow blue when touched! We stayed until 3 AM because we were so amazed with what's happening! Even the sands were glowing in blue color! It was back in February 2016 (Chinese New Year).
It's the microscopic organism called noctiluca and it is also known as the sea sparkle .It is one of the marvels of the ocean, the glowing is due bioluminescence 😊

I experienced this once as a kid. My dad told me it was magic. I remember jumping on the sand and it glowing. It reminded me of the scene in avatar when the avatars were walking across the glowing trees in the sky.
