I thought of the reason why some people hated Won, but it is not right to hate him. I understand both sides of Won and Rin. I also liked Rin at the beginning because there is no reason to not like him. However, I realized that Won really liked San and Rin. He did everything for the both of them. Some people, hate Won because of how he loves. But come to think of it, he is just expressive in his love and he trust to so much. He express his love for San so much and he trust Rin so much that he always deny to himself that Rin liked the girl Rin knows that he(Won) liked. He is not selfish, he just trust so much. He is not desperate, he is just expressive. He is willing to do and sacrifice everything for the people that he likes and is important to him.
That is how he loved. He loved more than himself.
Imagine being left by the person you love and the person you trust the most, it is so painful. Won....

I think San really liked Won. It is just because of the situation that she left Won and chose to leave with Rin.
San did not chose to love Won because of: the crown princess is Dan, there may be lot of trouble, the palace is where her father died, the throne is why her mother died, Rin could be in danger, she could break Rin and Won's friendship, and because it is the "crown prince" that she loves. She also didn't chose Rin in the end, she just leave because she want to start a new life. She has no choice. Leaving Won and going with Rin does not mean that she chose the other over the other.
The hint could be seen(as to why I thought of this) is the episode where Won chose Dan as her crown princess instead of San. San's sad and tearing face was showed there. Also, the day when Won and Dan got officially married, San's face is kinda disappointed. It feels like she has something to say to Won before Rin came to her and kissed her. By then, when San came to Won and Won told her that the marriage is already done, San's face became sad. She just hide it. This is also the reason why she kept ignoring Won's holding hands.
And also, San confessed in one episode that it is uneasy to think of other man when she is with Won(the episode where Won opened a curtain and he came close face to face with San), maybe because her mind is occupied with thoughts of Won. And also, in an episode when San said that Won should not choose her because she has someone else in her heart(the episode where San makes a plea to Won that he should not choose her as the crown princess) , I think that this is merely an excuse so that Won could already give up on her. Ofcourse, breaking a man's heart is the best way to make that man give his feelings up.
I think that when San chose to save Rin and cried when he is about to leave, it is because of the good things Rin has done for her(she also has flashbacks of them as shown in the episode). She cried because Rin is her friend and came to save her everytime. Come to think of it, she also will save Won when Won is in the place of Rin. She would also cry when Won is to leave her(or her leaving Won as shown in the end, however there is no other choice).
In the episode where San said that she liked Won, I think she meant it as more than friends. She brought Rin and Won's friendship in the conversation because it is the reason why she couldn't like Won(because she wouldn't want to break there friendship at the first place). This is also the reason behind Won's sad face, he thinks that San cannot like him because she doesn't want to break their friendship and that it will totally make her sad. He also is aware that he is the crowned prince and has a job for his nation.

Hi Maria, this is based on novel. In the novel San loved Rin, they ended up together and both had a daughter. Even in the interview Yoona said San liked Rin as a man, Won as a friend. In the dorama once queen asked San if she has any feelings toward Won, she replied she sees him as a best friend

I keep seeing your essays on every single Rin/San video lol. I don't think anyone will ever deny that San cares about Won, maybe even deeply at some point. Yes, the whole "In my lady's heart there's someone else" thing can easily be an excuse, but if that's the case then why did she never contradict Won when he confronted her about it (privately, might I add)? Why was there never a single moment when she showed even a bit of regret over how things turned out between them? I mean she literally says that even if she never found out Won was the crown prince, things would've been the same. San is selfless but she's only human, and I refuse to believe she's able to hide her feelings THAT well, ALL the time. Both Rin and Dan suffered from unrequited love and there were still moments when they pushed back (Rin when he wonders internally if San can try to read what's in his heart, and Dan when she asks Won if she's still not the priority in his heart).
Also, why did she say she wants to be Won's friend forever when the Queen asked her about Won's place in her heart (again, also in private)? Why did she not show any hesitation or internal conflict when being asked that question? Why did she not answer in a more ambivalent manner? Why did the Queen have that look on her face when she heard San's answer? Why did the Queen proceed to talk to Won about how the red thread of fate does not go where you want it to go? Why does the Queen stay silent when Won asks if San told her he wasn't the one in her heart? Narratively speaking, why did the writing make San go to Won specifically for Rin, using the promise of the necklace as an excuse?
I don't buy the excuse that she can't like Won because she doesn't want to break up Won and Rin's friendship, when liking Rin would have the exact same result, and if we're being completely fair here, the first time San had that thought was when she found out the masked man who held her on the roof that night was Rin.
