True story. My friend lived in a camper van when he worked in the oil fields and stored a lot of his cash in there so he had about 60 grand in cash just an envelopes in one of the drawers. Last summer he went to sell it and was showing it to people who are interested when somebody found the envelopes pocketed them and ran and only later did we realize what happened. After pleading with the guy and doing whatever we could talking to the police etc. A couple days later he calls up my friend and asked if it's okay if he can stop by again because he feels really guilty. My friend says sure when can you be here and the guy said I'm literally down the street when it was like a 2-hour drive to begin with. He ends up returning all the money and explaining that his sobriety sponsor and his pastor and our messages guilted him into not being able to live with himself and he doesn't know what came over him but he knew he just had to return the money. Without for sure he would never see that money back because paper cash is hard to trace especially for small town cops.

I started damanging a fence with my bare hands of a business near a bar (I was a young man and very strong back in those days). I didn't even realize I was doing it, and I had no motive at that business in particular, I was probably just depressed/lonely and the alcohol brought my actions. I only became aware when the owner heard me and threatened to call the police. So I can believe the man who broke the window because like I said I never damage property like this before the incident and i had no reason to do it.

I got this way at home once. I was drinking and standing in front of the microwave and the next thing I know I'm asleep in bed. I asked my sister about it the next day and she said I was up for hours after that having a great time... I never drank after that again. I told her that wasn't me. Just knowing that ANYTHING could've happened while I was out and I would've never known... No way. Freaks me out just thinking about it. I don't see how other people can do this and be fine with it. She said I was acting like I had when I was a teenager and there were no problems. My problem is if something bad happened it would be on me regardless remembering or not. I'm a big take ownership of your actions kind of person and this is a big NO for me.

Act 1: Offender was inebriated and dumb.
Act 2: He sobered up but realized his fault with the help of his friends. He gripped responsibility and was intent on making things right.
Major respect and hope for his generation.
Owner is understandably emotional from Act 1. Act 2 helped greatly but owner seems to need extra closure with a talk over pizza, his semi-olive branch.
Most things don’t ever need police or any other authority. Life is best lived free by responsible people.

If you are willing to take responsibility and do what you can to remedy the situation there should be an option for that without getting criminal charges and ruining your life over a drunken mistake. A lot of people don't come forward and try because getting charged and getting a record basically destroys the rest of your life even though there are other options to fix the situation.

I disagree. The guy should have fessed up to the police and the owner. Come out and say his name and pay for the damages after finding out how much it was. His drunken act...what if it hit a person? When he's charged for the crime, judge would have said to him that he needs to go to quit drinking and go to alcohol counselling. If he does that and have no recollection, what else did he do before or going forward. Yes, apology and paying up is good. But going through the system is the proper channel. You did a crime, you do the time.

@@RaptorJesus we just fundamentally disagree on what we consider to be a quality display of character. I disagree in general with our society's tendency to celebrate those who did wrong consciously and then stop doing wrong when I think it would be better overall to celebrate those who just don't do a bunch of wrong stuff and hurt other people and cause damage in the first place. Reality I guess I'm more reacting to something esoteric like societies need to promote redemption over straight living.
