When I contracted my Morgan stallion out to a ranch in Alaska where he ran with the herd for 3 years, they did not lose a single foal or mare to wolves or bears. When i took him back cuz they didn't want him breeding his daughters (of course), they lost a mare and filly foal that winter! And when riding him, later, if we came across a bear he'd perk up - always ready to go after them! He was brave - but he was so well-mannered with people you'd never know he could be so fierce!

Wondering if your fish/game agency could sedate/tag/place a minor cam around the neck of a hare coming into season. That might show if the wolves/coyotes are targeting the new born foals. The foals should be semi grown/running with the herds by now.

The person who puts these cameras and tracks these horses has captured a video of a band with three foals being attacked by a bear. The stallion, named Rambo, bravely chased the bear off. It was clear in that video that, although the bear was younger, it was certainly posing a real danger to the foals, but that stallion was very special in the way he protected these foals and that's why currently all three foals in that band are still alive. Coyotes are too small to pose a real threat as these horses are larger and have that heavy, drafty built. But a pack of wolves could certainly surround a herd and seperate the foals from mares, making them more vulnerable to attacks. There are also huge bears there and even though the stallions protect their bands valiantly, even they can't win against a 300 kg grizly bear with huge claws and teeth.

@@leavrhovec4992 glad to hear that there are some surviving foals but Mother Nature can “crown or crucify “..Will have to watch the past videos to see if any foals can be seen. Tough herds/healthy stallions…

I'm just curious - if a pregnant mare is still nursing a yearling, does that impact the newborn's ability to get colostrum?

Patchy hairloss in those areas are unfortunately a sign of kidney and/or liver troubles in horses. Here's hoping it's NOT that.

Poor little girl looks wormy. She is quite down in weight. The older one nursing is pulling her down but it is up to her to wean the yearling. Some mares with certain foals nurse a long, long time. I had a Mustang mare nurse 14 months. She was in shape and her one time goal, so I let her.
