Andrea Nasuelli Be that as it may, I don't think anyone can say that the always on requirement being shoehorned into a traditionally single player franchise helped at all. With that in mind, we've all learned that it would be easier to just buy sim city 4 in protest.
Super Bunnyhop Well, c'mon now, what should you have said..."Let's not raise our hope 'cause next year is certainly gonna be shit"? First you start with the attitude, my friend. Remember DragonCon? Didn't you say that was amazing?
Super Bunnyhop Relax, #GamerGate will save us all. All we need to do is disempower all women, LGBT people and minorities. *Reporting in from 2016* - Am now a Cthulhu worshiper.
You're not a dick George. Your show is one of my favourite things about wider games media. Gaming would be a much nicer hobby if more people shared your attitude towards games.
I consider Bunnyhop's content to be some of the best game-related content I've found on RUclips. You guys deserve way more attention for the great work you do. Let's hope you get that appreciation in the coming year. Thanks!
What? 2013 was amazing. DmC, Tomb Raider, Metro Last Light, Splinter Cell Blacklist, Bioshock Infinite, Assassin's Creed IV, Grand Theft Auto V, The Last of Us, Ninokuni, Antichamber, Dead Space 3 (not as good as the first two, still awesome), Sly Cooper, Crysis 3, FC3:Blood Dragon, Zeno Clash 2, Remember Me, Deadpool, Payday 2, Saints Row 4, Rayman Legends, Outlast ... You know, I got bored writing. 2013 was freakin' amazing.
Man, I've been watching your videos of yours for a while now, the first one being the Rage critical closeup. I respected your opinion on specific games, but now you're becoming the video game journalist / industry critic I respect the most. I have a feeling 2014 will be your year. Keep up the great work.
Money. Dicks. Money and dicks. Money and dicks and that wonderful Christmas sweater and I love this channel; you voice the trends of the gaming industry with such eloquent banter. All the micro transactions and the for-profit beta testing and all the phallic objects get to me a little less when there is a Bunny Hop video on it. Here's to 2014 in Gaming!
Oh man, if you only knew what was coming in 2014. It's so much fun looking back on what people thought about the gaming industry before #GamerGate, then realizing we might all dicks, but It's mainly because we were dragged into a dick fight between dick journalists and the dick trolls they couldn't ignore. Instead of just separating the trolls out and saying, "There are gamers and there are trolls, some of which might happen to be gamers", the media went full on into, "All gamers are cis-white-male misogynerds wailing hyperconsumers, Gamers aren't my audience and they don't have to be yours. The Gamer identity is dead" Worked out real well for the journalists now didn't it.
I really miss your work George, i find this kind of ganes journalism comforting, even if its about the past. The world is very lacking in this kind of journalism and commentary. Hope you're doing well regardless, just know your wirk was meaningful and inspiring, and you were mostly right 😊
You gave me the last nudge to go ahead and buy Papers, Please. Great closeup for the year, hope to see even more of you in 2014! Happy new year from cold Northern Europe.
Your last points about everybody being dicks in the gaming industry is something I've been thinking about lately. I mean, gamers as a whole get pretty crappy treatment from people who believe video games cause violence, people who think gamers are lazy and can't hold down jobs, people who expect everyone to be good at sports or whatever, and yet the most dickish people I've met are other gamers. Like Nintendo? Everyone makes fun of you for being kiddy. Like anything but PCs? PC users mock you. Like Smash? If you don't like Melee more than Brawl you're not a real Smash fan. I realize I'm using the stereotypes to prove my point and that's not fair but seriously, for people brought together by rejection from others, we sure are pretty quick to exclude pretty much everybody who doesn't conform to our opinions exactly.
We fight each other a lot, but GamerGate has shown me that we are still able to look past our differences and fight for a common cause. We are not that horrible yet. Anecdote warning: an interesting observation is that the most dickish gamers are usually the people who only game FIFA and CoD, i e the "popular" people who also tend to be (on average) more dickish IRL too.
Andy Sun thats dickish too. to assume ppl that play cod are somehow more dickish compared to others is a pretty gross generalization. although i do agree with fifa. those british kids can be real assholes sometimes.and i guess i just made a pretty big generalization. oh well.
Andy Sun Wait, GamerGate gave you faith in the gaming community? GamerGate, the 'movement' rife with verbal assaults and death threats on select female people in the game industry? Of all the things to make you think "Gamers can do good too!" You choose the one thing that harbors the worst of our community? Not the literally millions of dollars raised over the years for charity? Humble Bundle, Child's Play, etc.? If you think GamerGate has done any good, or can do any good, I beseech you to reconsider the facts of the situation.
The Base Man Both sides have gotten death threats, both sides have gotten verbal abuse. As far as I know, only one side has members who called for the entire opposition to be sent to the gas chambers, and it wasn't GamerGate. GamerGate has raised over $110.000 for charities. GamerGate has resulted in several websites making/updating their ethics policies. GamerGate has seen thousands of people from political and ideological opposites come together for a common cause. GamerGate formed the GamerGate Harassment Patrol, seeking out and reporting abusers on all sides. GamerGate found Anita Sarkeesian's main harasser (a brazilian "journalist") and asked her for help in taking him down, since Brazilian police will only act if the vicitm itself reports the crime. The person who asked got blocked, tweet deleted. Despite all this, GamerGate has been branded a hate group by the media. Why is that? Is it because we are a hate group? Or is it because the corruption we've already exposed might be just a small minority of what's actually happening, and they seek to discredit us?
I have not seen any citations over the charity donations, and if this was truly about ethics in games journalism then everyone would have said something about the blatant bribery that began happening over five years ago on IGN, where hard evidence was presented. And yet, no one got mad then, but here we see a female game developer and a female game community critic attacked endlessly by GamerGaters, and every female who comments on this has been attacked, including Felicia Day, who didn't even say anything inflammatory over the situation. If you really want to improve ethics in game journalism, if that's really what you think this is about, then you need to denounce GamerGate because it is nothing but trouble, rife with misogyny and harrassment, filled with people who only want to use it as an excuse to attack and flame. This is not about ethics in game journalism. It never was.
I thank you George for a great year and many good videos. This one was for me right on the spot on how things was this year. Keep up the nice work and be sure that I will continue to follow Super Bunnyhop next year.
Can't wait for your "2014 in gaming" in a month or so, this year has been fucking awful. So much for "it not being so bleak", just when you thought the dickishness had run its course.
Game james You cannot beat SJW's with flames and vitriol. People have been trying that for years and it only makes their bigotry stronger. The best way to fight whiny slacktivism is to soundly disprove and dismiss it. Look at how poorly recieved Polygon's review of Bayo 2 turned out. It's totally within their right to say she's an objectified character but to lower the score 2 whole points for it (btw Review Scores are terrible but whatever) was a dumb move. Rather than scream "SJWs ruin gaming again!" just say "Well if you look at Bayo through this lens..." and make it a talking point. No flames, no baiting, no yelling. It works wonders.
Game james TB won because he does his job extremely well. He's far from perfect and has a checkered past but he's taken the steps necessary to resolve those original problems. He doesn't have 2 mil subs for no reason.
The best reviewer award of 2013 for "2013 in Gaming," goes to George Weidman, for most accurate, articulate, concise, well rounded, realistic, well thought out, entertaining and most brilliant interpretation of gaming in 2013! Congrats, George!!! May the New Year be Grand!
Wow, a lot sure has happened this year. While people will disagree with your opinions, there is an extraordinary amount of research, witty writing, and critical analysis that goes within each video that in my eyes makes you a hell of a lot more deserving of respect and adulation compared to your peers. And even with the slight /v/ style of cynicism there is a level of maturity in how negative topics are handled on this channel, even if that means talking about dicks for like a solid minute. Merry post-post-Boxmas Day George! Looking forward to gaming in 2014!
Like hell I will disagree with this. It's some good journalism for once- telling it how it is in a professional manner. Even more surprisingly is it is on RUclips.
That last though is exactly what my 2013 in gaming was. For the whole year I was just trying to get up to date in games i never played like arkham asylum or far cry 3. After that, other than ACIV and The Last of Us, my whole year was MGS5, WatchDogs, Persona 5, Evil Within, etc etc. Perhaps the "looking at the future" thing happened because last year we saw the new consoles and we are all kinda looking forward to the really big battle horses these machines will have this year. So yeah, 2014 promises a lot, and we can only hope it also helps with all of those early access and the youtube controversy and everything.
Thanks for the overview and for all your videos this year. It reminds me of a old Russian joke (paraphrased): "How was your year?" "About average." "Average?" "Yes, worse than last year, better than next year." Have a good New Years, see you in 2014.
You are so right! We need new ideas! If the AAA developers can't do that, then give the power to the indies! Here's for a little hope that 2014 will be better!
2013 meant a lot to me in the way of gaming. i embraced a lot of alien concepts and genres i wouldn't normally throw myself into, like buying Fire Emblem and playing it for 90 hours. when it comes to the industry, i don't have a lot of great things to say, but i do believe we had a lot of stellar games to play this year. many highs and lows, but overall i had a pretty great timing with video games in 2013.
Given that "Papers Please" is your GOTY, I feel that I need to bring up another game made by the same developer called "The Republia Times." The whole idea is that you are the editor of the newspaper in a country much like Arstotzka, which gives it so much more potential for mixing gameplay and narrative than even Papers Please. I don't quite feel like it lived up on its potential, partially because it rushed for the Ludum Dare, but I feel that Lucas Pope could really expand on that idea.
so basically, 2014 is the same as 2013, just a little worse, and 2015 is gonna be the same as 1014, just a little bit worse..... unless something changes, we're gonna have another industry crash. Super Bunnyhop
1 view - 1 sub I appreciate how dense with information this video was for what felt like a casual dispatch of sorts Good luck with all of your future endeavors, Starting... now.
2013 has some awesome games like Shadow Warrior, Europa Universalis IV (and more CKII), Wargame:ALB, Divinity Dragon Commander, Arma3 or Kerbal Space Program. They maybe not be the most marketed games, like GTA4 or Papers, Please, but they were great. As a PC gamer, 2013 was a very good year if you avoid games with AAA marketing campaigns.
My 2013 Game of the year is dragons crown. Visually is what I miss from videogames as to why the industry abandons colour from its games and replaces it for more dark grey colours and realism hell, even konami with the talented artist they have have removed hand drawing artwork covers from the Castlevania and Metal Gear Series. While the side scrolling beat em up never fully went away Dragon Crown relived the games I played on the bit systems when I was a kid , it should be also awarded that each update instead of just fixing a game bug they actually added things to the game for free. The closest thing that came to my No.1 spot was Fire Emblem but Dragons Crown just takes the crown. 2014 is a better year for gaming and already Dark Souls 2 and Ground Zero coming out (two of my fav games of all time) are being released at the start it may be the best year in gaming since 2007 for me.
Reading through the cliff-notes of the Allistair Pinsof situation his firing seems to be actually the result of him not consulting his supervisor. Then after going over his head, he apparently insulted him over twitter. Doesn't really seem to matter what the content of his reveal was, anything that was controversial would've gotten him sacked.
If I get transistor and hotline Miami in 2014 along with soundtracks, I'll probably be set until the end of 2015. Now to cross off days on the calander....
I don't know how I feel about the notion that not being avant-garde is a negative thing. Especially when you showed bioshock infinite as a negative example...
"Polygon, quality journalism" - 2/3 of their Witcher 3 review is a complaint that a game set in Europe, made by a European studio, based on an European book written by an European writer, doesn't have black people. In a Medieval Europe setting.
Polygon is quality journalism. The Witcher isn't set in Europe, it's set in a fantasy universe, that has black people. And um, black people existed in medieval times 😂
My only problem with Gone Home is the double standards. If it had been a similar story about two young gay men instead of women no one would give a damn.
Good games take a long time to make we just have to wait sometimes, sure it affects the industry when some years have dull releases but at least we get rewarded for waiting.
Honestly, the 2014 release I am most excited about right now is the TLOU dlc. I absolutely adore that game, and in my opinion it deserves all the praise it got. You can call it a Splinter Cell/Third person shooter hybrid all you want, but gameplay isn't the only thing that makes a good game. Well, at least that is what I think. That is also why I don't get why people love Bioshock Infinite so much. The story wasn't all that good imo, not as much as people make it out to be anyway. And the gameplay didn't do it for me either. Though fun for the most part, it got a bit tedious after a while.
The year 2013 felt more like ''The year of indie gaming''. It's just feels like the quality of AAA developers is just going down while indies are those only one that are actually trying something new. I also find it very laughable how people compare Brothers and Gone Home, and how they praise Brothers while they're shitting on GH. Only real difference with the gameplay was that the other one had crappy and boring puzzles, while the other didn't even bother on wasting your time with those puzzles, but instead put effort in the environment and the immersion. The community of this year was the fucking worst. When some overhyped piece of game got 8/10 or 9.9/10, then the hell was raised. Critics got death threats, they were told to stop criticizing games and personally attacked. It's also really hard to say on who's side some of these gaming sites and critics are, on consumer's or on companies.
2013 was awesome, Bioshock Infinite, the Last of Us, the explosion of RUclips, many more people getting into Dark Souls, too many indie games to count. But you're right, the seeds were there for the backlash.
I believe that 2013 was a wonderful year for gaming. The Last of Us showed the video games are a great medium for story telling, Sly cooper had an amazing game after its 8 year disappearance from the industry, Tearaway showed that the Vita is capable of more than making B-plots to bigger console counterparts, Rayman Origins showed that 2D platformers are still relevant and Bioshock Infinite was amazing. I've yet to play GTA 5 but I've heard mind-blowing thing about it. But I guess it depends on what you looked forward to in 2013 compared to what I looked forward to. And how did you really judge The Last of Us? Because you don't have a PS3 and that was the only platform it was released on at the time.
the time of AAA shite is over, indie games are cheaper, more enjoyable, more unique and more likely to take risks, people say PC gaming is dying but only AAA stuff is, indie games are flourishing
This year's titles were head and shoulders above 2012's some of which are among the best of this generation: BioShock Infinite, GTA V, The Last of Us, Super Mario 3d world and even Tomb Raider. Don't know what he's talking about.
IMO, I liked 2013: Meteo Last Light Tomb Raider Bioshock Infinite Batman: Arkham Origins Far Cry: Blood Dragon Remember Me DmC:DMC Rayman Legends Assassin Creed IV: Black Flag And these are just the blockbuster titles coming from the top of my mind, let alone smaller titles.
This is a nice grumpy view of 2013 and by grumpy I mean, accurate, very accurate.
Thanks TotalBiscuit, The Cynical Brit (TB) I had never heard of Super Bunnyhop untill you poseted this. GREAT channel! Subbed!
Oh man, it's happening again! Thanks for the share TB :)
Super Bunnyhop Glad I found you! Good stuff!

Be that as it may, I don't think anyone can say that the always on requirement being shoehorned into a traditionally single player franchise helped at all. With that in mind, we've all learned that it would be easier to just buy sim city 4 in protest.
Couldn't agree more. Great video and I also hope that 2014 will be much better. Every game I was interested in comes out next year.
"Next year will get better"
LOL
I SURE WAS FULL OF SHIT HUH
Super Bunnyhop
Well, c'mon now, what should you have said..."Let's not raise our hope 'cause next year is certainly gonna be shit"? First you start with the attitude, my friend. Remember DragonCon? Didn't you say that was amazing?
Man, I watched this video just to go back to a time before GamerGate. Ahhhhhh, sweet, sweet nostalgia.
Super Bunnyhop Relax, #GamerGate will save us all. All we need to do is disempower all women, LGBT people and minorities.
*Reporting in from 2016* - Am now a Cthulhu worshiper.
hexatentacle Nice strawman.
This beats all the "Top 10 games of 2013" lists I've watched in the past 2 weeks.
You're not a dick George. Your show is one of my favourite things about wider games media. Gaming would be a much nicer hobby if more people shared your attitude towards games.
You should do a retrospective video looking at a year like 2004 or 1998, no one does that type of thing.
1997 and 98 were just insane. So much good shit came out.
man i miss these yaer end news coverage video's Goerge would put out every year up until 2017
Man, Super Bunnyhop is underrated. George is well-spoken and the editing quality has a nice balance between quality and getting the video out fast.
I consider Bunnyhop's content to be some of the best game-related content I've found on RUclips. You guys deserve way more attention for the great work you do. Let's hope you get that appreciation in the coming year.
Thanks!
Instantly subbed. Amazing critique of 2013.
Have a great new year.
2013 was pretty bad, 2014 was FUCKING TERRIBLE.
It was so fucking depressing I only paid attention to Nintendo and indie games

Worked out real well for the journalists now didn't it.
+Cole Pram "a dick fight between dick journalists and the dick trolls they couldn't ignore." Describes late 2014 perfectly.
+Cole Pram It's just like looking through world history. Oh, if only Serbia knew what was to come after they sent that petition back......
*sniff* How sad
I really miss your work George, i find this kind of ganes journalism comforting, even if its about the past.

Well said George. Well said.
Oh my God, you and Total Biscuit here in the same video, what are the odds!?
11:45 Exactly!
Many gaming websites disappeared from my bookmarks this year.
Happy new year George! I have a good feeling about next year.
'Lot of unfinished games released early in 2013... well, at least we have MGSV to look forward to.'
ALL HAIL PAPERS PLEASE! GLORY TO ARSTOTZKA! ENTRY NOT GUARANTEED!

Game james GamerGate happened. Why the fuck did GamerGate need to happen?
Game james That's not the part that gets me. Why this enourmous crusade againt "SJW"? Why the endless vitriol and shit flinging?

surprised I missed this video. Have you been reorganizing your videos after the youtube Content ID problems?
Losing Ryan Davis was the worst part of this year.
so true. RIP Ryan, still missed 8 yrs later
The best reviewer award of 2013 for "2013 in Gaming," goes to George Weidman, for most accurate, articulate, concise, well rounded, realistic, well thought out, entertaining and most brilliant interpretation of gaming in 2013!

As shit as this year was let's just hope that next year is better, good video George.
Goddamit, you just had to play the Papers Please music. That tunes gonna be stuck in my head all day XD
And dont worry George. I'll never see why Infinite has all its ludicrous fame either.
it's all to do with Elizabeth, a bad character for a bad story with a poor ending = beta's thinking they got close personally with a girl.
George, you are the reason why I still have faith in the videogame-community (along with Campster and Extra credits). So no, you're not the dick.
2015 - The Year of Hype.
2015: The 3rd best year in gaming, after 1998 and 2007.
2017: The 4th best year in gaming

Another excellent video, George. I've been watching BunnyHop since the beginning and you've come so far. Best wishes in the new year!
Thanks for the overview and for all your videos this year.
It reminds me of a old Russian joke (paraphrased):
"How was your year?"
"About average."
"Average?"
"Yes, worse than last year, better than next year."
Have a good New Years, see you in 2014.
Merry Xmas George, and here's to 2014 not being a sausage-fest. *cheers*
You are so right!
We need new ideas!

Hmm..
Welp, in my opinion, it hasn't been very interesting. At all.
Uhmm.. hope for 2015??
The lazy cutout of your head surrounded by dongs had me.
Interesting video, good work.
Btw Tim Follin is a fucking legend.
gonna be interesting to see how you follow up on this one with your 2014 recap...
Happy holidays and better new year to Bunnyhop
So I just watched this for the first time and saw that hopeful ending only to see your 2014 year review subtitle in the sidebar.... luls.
It is truly the best of times and the worst of times
wow, this channel should be as big as ReviewTechUSA, you deserve it
You just told me quite a few things I did not previously know. + for you man

I appreciate how dense with information this video was for what felt like a casual dispatch of sorts
Good luck with all of your future endeavors,
Starting... now.
It's a sad year.
i still want that bioshock video
I dunno GTA V + Pokemon X + PS4 and some amazing indie games like Papers please. I'm happy.
I definitely want to see your opinion on Bioshock Infinite because I was not flashed by it either.
That video already exists, if that's what you're asking. Look on his channel.
Clowndoe Thank you very much.
2013 will always be remembered as the year of Who.
?
emikochan13 Doctor Who ¬_¬
Adam Walker Why?
Marcus Adze Because the show celebrated its 50th Anniversary on 2013. The world isn't all about doom and gloom for the gaming industry.
Adam Walker The world isn't also about Doctor Who either?
Very well made video! Hope for more of these in the future!
Merry Christmas to you Bunny.
I get very derpressed everytime these videos come out
Ha! First time iv watched you vids, thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks man, new sub here
It's good to know I'm not the only one who feels this way!
Our future gaming seems bleak...
Again my dear sir, amazing video.
Fantastic video as always George! Keep up the good work.
ha, what a coincidence that I downloaded paper please the same day I stumble upon this video. awesome indie game
Nice sum up with some room to mull it over. Happy Holidays.
'spaceing renaissance' - shows no mans sky of all things!
I love how he basically nailed what Early Access would turn into
"Polygon, quality journalism" - 2/3 of their Witcher 3 review is a complaint that a game set in Europe, made by a European studio, based on an European book written by an European writer, doesn't have black people. In a Medieval Europe setting.
I find that hard to believe
Polygon is quality journalism.
The Witcher isn't set in Europe, it's set in a fantasy universe, that has black people.
And um, black people existed in medieval times 😂
My only problem with Gone Home is the double standards. If it had been a similar story about two young gay men instead of women no one would give a damn.
*****
Mmhmm.
They should've made it about the crazy, JFK obsessed writer instead. Or, failing that, make a game version of House of Leaves.
Good games take a long time to make we just have to wait sometimes, sure it affects the industry when some years have dull releases but at least we get rewarded for waiting.
Could be worse, I mean the world ended last year but here we are still standing.
3:33 Haha! Nice 'Bait and switch'
Ready for next year Super Bunnyhop?
The beginning of what was a 4 year downswing for mainstream gaming.
I didnt realize this year was so bad for gaming, but thats only because I didnt buy any new games this year. I was too busy catching up on last year.
GTA 5 wasn't the fifth gta...
the time of AAA shite is over, indie games are cheaper, more enjoyable, more unique and more likely to take risks, people say PC gaming is dying but only AAA stuff is, indie games are flourishing
Good analyzation, hopefully good stuff will happen next yeah
started from the bottom now we here
It was a dark year, indeed. :(
This year's titles were head and shoulders above 2012's some of which are among the best of this generation: BioShock Infinite, GTA V, The Last of Us, Super Mario 3d world and even Tomb Raider. Don't know what he's talking about.
Can't wait for the Bioshock video! I thought that game was horrible.
I bought DayZ for the sake of price. However TBFP was in the video, thus I am pleased.
Things were better back then...
Okay so this is only the first seconds, but 2013 was greatly redeemed in the end because of the christmas hat.
IMO, I liked 2013:
Meteo Last Light
Tomb Raider
Bioshock Infinite
Batman: Arkham Origins
Far Cry: Blood Dragon
Remember Me
DmC:DMC
Rayman Legends
Assassin Creed IV: Black Flag
And these are just the blockbuster titles coming from the top of my mind, let alone smaller titles.
Sad, but so true.
Wow, the pre-GamerGate shitstorm could be seen miles away, none of us saw it yet.
I was laughing so hard for all the last seconds of the video.
god damnit that monitor behind you turn it off the blinking of the standby light is killing me
Oh God, I didn't even know that was on.
Now it's killing ME too!
