  • Today as part of my series on DCC basics I want to take a look at throttles. These are really an important part of all DCC systems and each brand offers a different feel and different functionality. So it's a good idea to handle and try out throttles when selecting a new DCC system. So let's get started with a look at the history of throttles and then some representative ones available today.

    Hi Larry, thank you for another great video for the community. I would like to make one small addition to what you said about phone throttle apps like WiThrottle and Engine Driver. With DCC-EX, you CAN program with a throttle. Engine Driver supports the protocol in addition to the WiThtrottle protocol which has a lot of enhancements over WiThtrottle. Since the DCC-EX EX-CommandStation understands WiThrottle or , you have a choice. There is a DCC-EX button on Engine Driver where you get access to the other commands, such as reading your loco ID command, writing CVs, running routes with EXRAIL, and more. There is also the new EX-ToolBox app that allows you to program locos, run diagnostics, test servo positions, etc. Like you said in the beginning, "there's too much out there", you can't cover it all. Just going over features of EX-CS would take 20 videos ;)

    Another awesome and informative video Larry, Thanks! In the future I would also love to see all DCC locomotives already factory speed matched in that the NMRA had set a standard where any throttle you use with any loco, will go at the same speed based on what scale speed you set them at! 👍

    Thank Goodness they are different. All the same systems would be a real bummer. Not only that, thankfully we have competition that drives innovation!

    Hi Larry, nice video. I use both NCE and Digitrax at the club, NCE for the HO layout, and Digitrax for the N layout. Of the two systems, I prefer NCE.
    1. NCE is easier to set up consists, especially advanced ones. Digitrax's method of consisting using their throttle is the old style consist system, plus I find it unwieldy to set up;
    2. It is easier to use the NCE throttle one handed;
    3. I can take my NCE ProCab radio throttle to any layout, and unless there is another throttle there with the same address, I can use it without any special setting. With Digitrax, if I take my DT602D throttle to another layout I have to reset it to recognize that layout's loconet;
    4. I prefer the NCE throttle having only one speed control active at a time. With the Digitrax throttle having two knobs, quite often I find that I have bumped the other knob and find that I am not in control of the train that I was running.
    5. When finished using the NCE throttle, all I have to do is to shut it down. With the Digitrax throttles, I have to "dispatch" any locomotives that I was operating. Otherwise there is no space in the Digitrax throttle for any other locomotives the next time I want to operate trains.

    Hi Larry,
    I recently purchased a Digitrax Zephyr Express DCC controller and have converted 3 of my locomotives, 15 to go. I am enjoying your back catalogue of DDC themed clips.
    I left a Thankyou message on one them realised it was over 12 months ago and you may not see it so thanks again and keep up the good work.
    Cheers Peter White (Melbourne Australia)

    I really enjoyed this video. Surprised that even Atlas was marketing a product at one time. I started around 1995 or 96 with a Digitrax Challenger. I saw DCC demonstrated at the NMRA annual convention in Valley Forge PA. in 1993. I was sold immediately. NO MORE BLOCKS!! What could be better! I am still using Digitrax equipment with a variety of decoders installed. Thanks Larry!

    I have the NCE Power Cab since it hit the market. Love it. It does everything I ask of it. While my old club used Lenz. I had to purchase an LH90 throttle to use at the club. I honestly love how the LH90 fits my hand and the ease of use. Probably the best engineer throttle made.

    The original Marklin Digital system became the DCC standard (my old marklin decoders ((made by Lenz?))) work on DCC. Then Marklin changed their protocol. I started with marklin, switched to LENZ in 1993.

    Thanks for the background and overview. I remember reading articles in Mo. del Railroader such as CTC16, and thinking, "That would be fun, but WAY too complicated". Then those manufacturers made the systems that are already programmed and more user-friendly.

    • @TheDCCGuy
      @TheDCCGuy  Год назад

      Yes, I learned on CTC16 at the Northern VA club. It was a good system at the time but just didn’t have the capabilities of DCC. When Digitrax sent me their first system for a review I immediately sold my CTC16 equipment and bought decoders with the proceeds.

    Finally, someone mentions the ESU CabControl!! Well, PIKO's version anyway. The PIKO is basically the same as the ESU, but less amperage. from the control station. Both are WIFI, out of the box. No add-ons required. The throttle has some unique features, like auto return on the throttle wheel and directional controls that toggle the direction after stopping. Icons for your turnout routes. No addresses to be entered.
    My ESU plays well with NCE Switch8's to power/control my Circuitrons. I did have to turn off the RailComm feature though, but not all my locos are ESU, so little import. The latest firmware allows Programming on the Main as well as a programming track. Easily set up for JMRI via your home WIFI or hard wired system.
    Overall, I love it!

    Can you go into more detail about LCC control and what is available?
    Also can what system is best for full signalling control, both in regards to full auto use and semi automatic use with dispatching (signal and points control ) ability?

    Larry, great job explaining the different throttles. Being one heavily invested in Digitrax with the latest throttles and WiFi I still look for a better way. I have bought Blunami decoders and run my On30 locomotives using my iPad and iPhone. I really like that method. The ESU ECoS throttle looks a lot like the Android throttle you showed. Yet, it has photos of European locos you can scroll through to select a loco. I know one RUclipsr who posts regularly that uses the ECoS throttle for his California based switching layout. He is using addressing to select his locos. However, the pic is still showing a European loco. I have been curious if one can import their own photos of their locos, link the photos to a long address and then select a loco to control by the pic? By the way, I also have a black Z21 Command Station with its own WiFi router.

    Nice video comparing your systems, I used to have the NCE Powercab system but with changing to sound I have bought the Roco/Flesihmann Z21 system, its far easier to use. I use a couple of Android pad's, but you can use I pads or I phones etc. You can use throttles too if that is what you prefer, you can use the Tcs throttle you mention as far as I know. I also have one of the Fleishmann throttles but to be honest I prefer the pad system. You can take pictures of your loco for identification on the system, you can also have track diagram and work your points, think you call them switches over in the US.

    I have the ESU Ecos and the Mobil Control 2 that looks like a phone with a throttle knob, as well as a few other Wi-Fi devices hooked up to the Ecos as well. The device could have up to 16 throttles.

    Hi Larry...love your videos! A little off topic, but maybe an idea for future videos...I received an Arduino for my birthday with the hope to use it with my layout. I just retired from an IT job, so I'm good with the programming side. What would be interesting, tho, are some ideas for integrating the Arduino into a layout. I've seen some other Arduino/model railroad videos, but they're typically using DC. I'm still trying to understand what can and can't be done plugging into the DCC bus (relative newbie). Anyways, awesome job!

    Great video.
    Something I've been confused about for a while when looking at the DR5000 and the follow on YD7100 / YD7101 from YAMORC is the difference between the LocoNET B (Booster) and LocoNET T (Throttle) when my DCS210+ just has LocoNET ports. I'm just struggling to work out why there is a difference.

    • @benbedothu
      @benbedothu Год назад

      LocoNet B
      A LocoNet jack may be identified as LocoNet B. It indicates a LocoNet Booster Connection, as part of a booster network. LocoNet B limits the current to 200mA. It is meant to connect the command station and boosters together, not power devices like throttles. Since most command stations are integrated with a booster, this connection is not common.
      The RailSync signals present are for use by the booster.
      Some command station/booster units offered by LocoNet licencees may have a LocoNet B connection.
      Loconet T
      LocoNet T indicates higher current available to power throttles, accessory decoders and other LocoNet devices. The T indicates a connection for the Throttle Network. Many devices have jacks which are just labelled LocoNet, which are LocoNet T connections. LocoNet T connections lack the RailSync signals the LocoNet B connections have, so some devices may not work when connected to a LocoNet T jack.
      The front and side jacks on a UP5 panel are LocoNet T, and are not to be used to feed additional downstream devices.

    Nice history of controllers, Larry. Now with all of this knowledge of controllers, boosters, command stations and how it all works can I drag you into the controversy of which system is best?

      Best bet is find a local railroad club and use what they have. But if you want a really simple outdate clunky system with out a lot options or features go NCE. If you want a top of the line system with a lot of bells i would look into either the the new TCS or the ESU system both are very very nice. Midgrade is the Digitrax system which has a lot to recommend itself. I know they have some build your own DCC systems out their i have seen done which are very cool. That being said I would tell anyone getting into DCC is join a club and pick what the club uses.

    Greetings Larry : As a committed DIGITRAX user going back to the start of the DT 100 era; the eventual introduction / availability of the UT series as a strictly * Control * throttle was welcomed. Needless to say; as an OpS guy; I have more than a few to hand out to mates who share and participate. Like yourself; the large knurled control knob ( CK ) is preferred by all; but there is consensus that there is a rather silly design fault. The space between the CK and the address selectors ( AS ) located below the CK is too restrictive for adult fingers and tends to promote incorrect address selection. I have since replaced the preferred CK with a smaller version to assist in this respect; being a tad retrogressive. The face-plate design is ergonomically incorrect; the bottom-end being a waste of needed space that just displays a printed logo ! I know it involves PC-board and related component re-positioning modifications; but seriously; an increase of but 1 cm between the CK + AS; would be a vast; practical improvement ! Why this annoying difficulty has not been identified by DIGITRAX over the years; is beyond me .... ? !

    Great video. Learning about DCC history makes us better in the hobby. Is there a video as to why a sound equipped locomotive (steam or diesel) starts to stutter once it gets past a few feet? I'm using NCE Power Cab Starter system. I tried turning off blocks and simply running the main - works sometimes. Yes, I did say blocks! Don't laugh.... To me it makes no sense to run the entire layout without some sort of isolated track sections.

      You have to have the Wifitraxx wifi transceiver for the NCE system. It is similar to the Digitrax LNWI device I showed. Or if you have DecoderPro connected to your NCE system then you can connect the phone to it via your home wifi router. I did a video on that a year or two ago.
