I had a chance to see this superlative musician in 2000 in Deptford Old Town Hall and bitterly regret not doing so, but I paid my debt by recording Prokofiev's Cinq Poesies de Balmont for the University Archive in 2008. Professor of Music at Goldsmith's, Alexander Ivashkin (RIP) had invited Rostropovitch. Sasha said that Rostropovitch was for him one of the greatest teachers and one of the most wonderful human beings he had worked with. When Rostropovitch died a great light in the post-soviet music went out and Ivashkin was, sadly, not long afterward. What is striking here is Msitslav's great hold on intonation and timbre; he is as natural with these as Tchaikovsky can be with melody. Ivashkin's widow, Natalia, still teaches at Trinity college of music. Hgallie
Oh so beautiful. It FINALLY made me get off my bottom & ring about cello lessons!! Thanks for the inspiration. Beautiful piece. This guy is SO moving to watch. He looks like he's going to explode when a build up comes, you can see the whole song/score written on his face. If you know what I mean? Beautiful.

His playing is so beautiful that it could make me cry... Love Rostropovich
My mother remembered this being played on the Third Programme on the day that war was declared on 3rd September 1939.

Wladimir Kalinin,

Wladimir Kalinin,
Wladimir Kalinin,
