The 911 should be called 'Project Binky II' - because it's taking as bloody long! (j/k - love all the vids, always look forward to watching them)
Haha, they haven't even got close to paint yet, but I will take the compliment :D
any mirror mounted on the front fender (wing) looks awesome.....nicely done Jeff!!
Jeff, can recommend jewelers scales and bolts for that damn bench grinder.
Haha, I really should get around to bolting that down ;)
Great job, the additional lights seem to have made it brighter, less shadows. I'm surprised you mounted the mirrors without sitting in the car first. I had a similar dilemma with my AMX and the cost of original talbot style mirrors. Keep up the great work!
The mirrors are more cosmetic than functional ;)
I used the cheap fender mirrors (£29 on ebay) on my 240Z. I sanded them down to remove all of the moulding lines then etch primed, anthracite grey solvent base and 2 coats of 2k gloss clear. They look awesome. I like the holes too.
I will do similar, just get rid of the holes ;)
Hi jeff i have noticed since you have been back from the state's that your shed and the area that you have been working in is a lot tidier
Keep up the fantastic work
I am making a concerted effort to work cleaner ;)
I have always liked the JDM mirrors on the fenders, wow $700 for repos. I've seen fender mount mirrors on Porsches as well.
mikl911 I have a Fender mounted mirror on my type 3. It's very hot rod esque.
The clear wrap on the kitchen scale is wrapped under the scale, possibly keeping tension on the top plate... that food wrap is super "clingy" if it touches the side at all, it will stick, making the "weight" appear progressively heavier
But what if I want to mount pistons and clean mirrors, Jeff? What do I do then?
Mounting the pistons sounds uncomfortable ;)
Mr & Mrs J. . . . .i reckon 'George' for the Bug, after all he was accredited with being the fifth Beetle here in the UK.
If it is any help i cannot decide on mirrors for the Mini, so will leave them off for now. . . .not sure i like the mirrors on the wings, but you should go with what you like, its your car mate
Jeff, I also could not come at the price for the reproduction or OEM long arm mirrors for my 72 JDM Fairlady Z. I am in the process of modelling a set of replacements to 3d print. I've got hold of an original and they will look very close including having springs underneath to allow them to flex if bumped. I'm a few weeks away from finishing. May look to sell some as kits - they will require sanding, painting and assembly.
That sounds like a much more sensible idea. Send me a pic when you are done.
On camera the both looks a bit more purple? Great as always! Cheers to you both.
New haircut suits Mrs Jeff :-)... Mirrors, I actually like them, holes and all.
Hey mate have a tip for you when your doing the piston weight use a set that you use to weight yourself
Haha - awesome. Just got the exact same mirrors in the mail today. Was also really surprised how bad they look :D
First off, been enjoying the series (all three of them!) Mixing the LED color temperatures is a common practice to get better color reproduction from leds, well done. Question: Are you reusing the crank? How are you going to balance the crank with the newly-balanced pistons? And I agree with the other commenters, new headstuds would probably be a good idea...
I am putting in new head studs, but reusing the pistons, rods, and crank. I haven't had the crank balanced, but it is in good condition from what I can see and is still well with spec, so I am just going to go with it.
I don’t mind the holes, remind me of the inner sills - maybe just take off the sharpe edge?
Did you put the plastic that they come with, below the fender or attached to the mirror ?
Jeff, have a look at Japan Mini Bullet mirrors.... pretty similar and cheap enough to try
Great work as always, I'm curious to see which are areas you'll grind to balance the pistons. I did it once on my Merc engine to match the weight of a new rod to the old ones and I tried to remove material around the con rod bottom and sides. 2 gr meant a lot of grinding! About the mirrors, can you try to locate a Japanese scrap yard on the internet? These mirrors look ok but a little too tall?
I bought the short stalk 510 mirrors which some of my friends in japan like since the are chrome and the repro from Thailand that is metal is about 200
for the mirrors, did you happen to look as Tex automotive line up of classic mirrors and such??
So how did you end up filling the holes in the mirrors?
The 911 should be called "Helmut" because it's a German name and it sort of looks like a helmet, the bug should be called "M.J." for Mrs. Jeff, and the 240 should be "Hashimoto", after the founder on Nissan.
I'm guessing your engine builder in the USA would balance each piston and then end to end balance the rods? If you don't separate the rod from the piston, then how do you know where to remove the weight from?
That is going to be more difficult, but I will try to weigh each end. I don't want to press out the gudgeon pin, as I am highly likely to damage something.
Yeh the small end is heat shrunk on to the gudgeon so they are generally not repressed off without damaging. In saying that, occasionally we would have one stick as we were fitting them at the reco place I worked at , so we would have to notch and offset some pipe to support the piston and press them out carefully. It isn't generally done though!
Dude have fun balancing, it’s very rewarding. Are you going to balance as is or remove the connecting rod from the piston?
I am not removing the rod from the piston, as I am not replacing the gudgeon pins, so there is no point risking damaging them. I will balance them though, I have ordered another set of scales that measures to 0.1g, so we will see how it goes.
Home Built By Jeff right on! Yeah that was probably one of the most you know what clenching process is putting the pins back in for my Z engine. Lol. I had the same thing happen with my scale I bought that was just to the gram, so frustrating. You will like the new one.
If you fit those mirrors you may as well call it Dudsun. New rod bolts =resize rods. Don’t scrimp out on the Datsun.
Não entendo nada que você tá falando, mas à paixão é a mesma.
Parabéns pelo trabalho.
Haha, I don't understand a word either, but I am glad you are enjoying it ;)
About the LEDs, i'm gonna give you a little base about optics (trying to not sound cocky while doing it). Solar light is a wave composed from all the different wavelenghts, some of them are visible for humans.
Now when you see a red flower it means that it is absorbing all the different colors apart from red, which is reflected being able to reach your eyes that will say it is in fact red.
The problem with LEDs, at least with cheap "normal" ones, is that they emit a specific shade of light so if you are in the dark with a blue LED and you point it to the flower i was talking before there will be no red wave for him to reflect and you will not be able to see its "true color".
This is why there are special LEDs that emits all the spectrum that are often used from shops in their windows to display merch in the best way possible. Considering their major costs a cheap solution would be to use RGB strips set on white (white in RGB strip is obtained by having all the three color on at the same time), that should end in having a wider range of waves emitted and a more natural light.
TIP: if you ever need to check an infrared led like the of the TV remote, just use the camera of your phone and check if it turns on when you press the buttons, that is possible because camera sensors can catch a wider range than the only visible lights
Interesting tip.
Love what you do but.... those mirrors! Don’t spoil the ship for a ha’peth of tar. 😉
When I helped out in a machine shop as a kid, Blue Printing a engine was basically applying blue print printers ink to engine parts, then looking at them with a black light which highlighted any microscopic cracks or any cracks at all, And of course balancing was balancing all moving parts. But hey that was 50 years ago. We used to work on Daddy Don Garlits dragster The Swamp Rat.
The Z is looking fantastic. You could probably make a living just doing all the metal work and painting, then let the new owner do all the rest. Thats the part people end up paying big bucks to have done.
That sounds like the true meaning of Blueprinting an engine. Nice I didn't know that.
I am starting to think, that all the body work is so painful, that I need to streamline it. I actually prefer doing the engine building and the other fun stuff ;)
Your very good at the body work and engine work. I have always had a problem with being such a perfectionist body work always gives me a fit, but Im learning from the way you work. I need to find a happy medium. Good to see you wear your dust mask, take it from me it will catch up to you. When your older and you really need your health is when it starts to take its toll. anything man made is very bad on your lungs, it dosent know how to handle it. Your a Fireman so you know this.
Hey.....Its all Fun.
The last few days I’ve spent watching all your vids. Love the work you do even though your taste is... questionable *cough*tartan*cough* 😂
But please for the love of all that is holy, if you’re ever going to listen to comments, think about what you’re going to say before you say it. You say ehh/umm/ahh about 10000 times an episode. I know it’s an Aussie thing but good god it’s offputting!
Keep up the good work Jeff!
So Mrs Jeff found her kitchen scale again? :-D
Haha, I just snuck it back in. What she doesn't know won't hurt her ;)
Or you.
Oh some epoxy or fiberglass in those holes might work well.
in some cars mirrors are non-symmetrical for a visibility reasons :) since You are not sitting in the center of the car your visibility angle towards mirrors is not the same right to left :)
P.S. DO NOT reuse head bolts :O
Martynas Gabdankas Why? They are not a torque to yield (stretch bolt). Unless the threads are damaged or they are corroded, just clean them and the head bolt holes in the block light lube on threads and under washers and torque to factory spec. Heat cycle the engine and do a re-torque.
knowing the price of the bolts compared to the price of a rebuilt engine I would not take the risk, knowing how old that engine is....
Martynas Gabdankas what's the risk? Catastrophic engine falure from head bolts. It's more likely to fail from him fitting the ARP rod bolts without resizing the rods. The L series engine is one strong power plant and i always have at least 1/2 a dozen of them in the shop at any given time. Performance builds get ARP head stud kits but a stock bolt will be fine for Jeff. He will be stripping it down sooner than you think. Let's not forget we are talking about Datsun owners. They are notoriously tight asses when it comes to spending money. I deal with them ALL the time.
well I meant that old bolts DO stretch not just torque to yield... whats the connection between ARP studs and resizing rods?
Martynas Gabdankas he is going to fit a set of new rod bolts without resizing the rods which will affect the bearing clearances. He is reusing high wear components like pistons and valves yet head bolts are a major concern to you. Please explain the failure that will occur due to this issue that is standard industry practice of reusing factory bolts. I only watch this crap for comedic value to amuse myself with his bumbling through his explanations and now know he has followers of the same standard. Uuumm aaaahhh eeerrrr!
The Datsun Downunder.
Around here that is just a Datsun ;)
Not a fan of the mirrors, they are such a centrepiece in the appearance of the front end. There’s gotta be a better solution .
Well they did put them on the doors in Aus, but I like the quirky JDM style ;)
Project names?
The Porsche has to be "The Tartan Terror." (Why are people so afraid of your fabric choice?)
The Beetle should be "Clarke Cockroach." (It is a Superbug, after all. Named for Clark Kent, Superman's alter ego.)
Great suggestions. I think non-Porsche people don't understand the tartan. Porsche people get it, even if they don't like the particular choice.
I hope Mrs. Jeff will never find out about her kitchen scale lol
Why not go for a single mirror on the driver's side? I think that would look nice and purposeful while still being a tribute to the JDM style. You could spend just $350 on just one quality repro then too..
The datsun should be called the boog-sun Z. The beetle lemon squeezy beeand as one guy said the 911 the tarter king.
The JeffSan
Bit late, but you should call one of them Sandy because of all the bloody sanding.
The Datsun still needs a name ;)
too late but for future reference these are period correct www.cobranda.com/raremi.html
They are from the Period, but not correct for the Z.
Mirrors belong where they are close enough to actually see someting - not on the damn fenders!
Talk to the Japanese, they designed the car that way. They just changed the location for everyone else.
To add to the conversation, Japan uses fender mirrors becuse roads and in-between building driveways are super narrow there. You may also find plastic rods sticking up from the front bumper so that drivers know where the corners of thier cars are. Fender mirrors don't exist becuse they are stylish. It's because if you drove a side-mirrored car in Japan, you would not have side-mirrors for very long.
They are absolutely useless on the front guard. It’s just a fan boy fad like flares and stretched tyres. Have fun working on your engine with those things in the way.
Beetle: Bumble. Porsche: Hamish (for that bloody tartan). 240z: Boggy. Those mirrors are unforgivable. Please wash your brain, or ignore me which will be just as effective.
You spent all that time on the body work to get it looking fantastic and then didn't splurge on the mirrors
Keep watching ;)
Boggy McBogface?
Bobo the Datsun
Let's see blue Plus yellow is...green
@Joel Palmer not in light mate. Colour works differently. Yellow +Blue= White. That’s why old ladies used a blue rinse back in the day. Haha.
Stop! Dont install those mirrors. They are junk. The plastic pivot point on the base will strip and not keep the mirror vertical.
Good tip. I will be modifying them, so that is something to look at.
