It’s interesting to think of how many secrets there really were to this friendship. Don’t get me wrong, they were clearly best friends and love each other. But Demi was not really Demi here. She was starting to suffer from so much, this is right before the drugs. I’ve got to say, I don’t think that being friends with Demi was an easy thing to do. Until after her second rehab. I feel that Selena always kind of saw that there was something off with her, but of course she still loved her because Demi is a great person. But I think Selena could tell that there was something mentally wrong, just a little bit off, and I think that always veered Selena further and further away until Demi eventually started using drugs and that’s exactly when their relationship took a turn and Selena started hanging out with other people. She wasn’t stupid, I think Selena knew better than to hang out with Demi after a while. It’s kind of sad because in a way the relationship wasn’t really truly honest. I doubt they will ever be as close again because Demi is a very different person now. I think they will always love each other like sisters, but I don’t think they will ever be best best friends again sadly. It’s such a strange situation that they were both in with each other, becoming celebrities at the same time, Demi undergoing all this pressure while Selena was able to handle it. For the most part. They just became too busy and too different. Just interesting.... It’s hard to wrap my mind around. What a strange best friendship this was for a long time, but with so many secrets...huh.
I also feel like Selena was a lot of pressure for Demi to be around. Not that it was her fault at all. But Selena did not have anything severely wrong with her mentally. She was able to handle the pressure and I think she was always like the good girl, very successful, never did anything wrong. And I feel like Demi, being best friends with her, had to sort of live up to that as well. Or wanted to be like her. And was probably compared her a lot. I’m not blaming either girl, I’m just saying I think that was the situation and neither of them really aware of it. That could also be why their friendship had some rocky places as they got older. I’m glad they’re back together at least as friends (and sisters) though.
I think this was good for Demi, her friendship with Selena was her one reprieve from the mental illness and drugs. She seems very insecure, but happy to be there in all these videos. She also seems so deeply Touched by Selena’s compliments. It gives me the sense that Selena has some kind of inkling that Demi is a troubled girl.
Selena has just recently stated that she's bipolar as well. Maybe down the line both Selena and Demi can reconnect through their experiences with dealing with it
