    I kinda interpreted the priests line about discrimination as saying that someone should love everybody evenly. You should love both enemy and friend. It's in extension to Jesus dying for everyones sins. This is kinda what Thor's did, he refused to kill his opponents sacrificing himself for everyone's wellbeing and safety. But that's just my interpretation. Great vid btw.

      I see it that way too. Love is something that just "IS" like snow, if there is love in the heart of men, that love shouldnt be given to 1 person only, like Ragnar did to Canute, but been able to love anyone. Just like Thors said to Thorfinn: "you have NO enemie". In certain way, Thors did find love better than a lot of christians like the priest

    The priest’s definition of love is an unselfish and indiscriminately act, with no ego. Discrimination means treating differently, not necessarily bad.
    When the priest say that the feeling of Ragnar towards Canute was discrimination, it means that Ragnar would let any atrocities occur to fulfill his selfish interests, which was to protect Canute, which for the priest is not love, or at least divine love.
    The priest’s definition of love it’s not the traditional perception of love.

    What i understood from what he meant by discrimination is that in order to “love” someone, you are rejecting the others that you dont “love”, you protect those who you love from those you dont which is discrimination. A very interesting point of view that i never thought about. Beautiful

    I think what they meant as discrimination is that you love someone so much you're forgeting to love everyone else, just like the snow just exists for everyone, the wind exists so everyone can breath, just like when you die and you give your everything to everyone without complaining.
    I'm sorry, english is not my native language so it's quite hard to explain something like this.

      @@gladness7871 it's not.. It's perfectly paced, if u paid attention to everything beforehand then u will see his character development isn't fast. Its perfect.. Maybe rewatch the series and pay more attention to canute's character and especially his dialogues. This is not character development for canute, this was the real canute from the very beginning. If u remember the conversation between thorffin and canute on the carriage, canute says the only reason he doesn't talk isn't because he's shy but because his words hold a lot of value as a prince. In canute's nature, he was always like this as a person but on top of that he had this fake facade going on and in this episode after his conversation with ragnar and the priest. Canute let's go of that facade and brings out his true nature which was his character from the start. Watch filmbuff's reaction to this episode and listen to his discussion, he explains it perfectly. Then u will understand that it wasn't too fast in any way, it was perfect and possibly one of the best thing of this show

    I think the two main questions of this show ,"what it means to be a true worrior?"and "what is true love ?" Where shown side by side in this episode to give us a hint that answer to both is quite similar.

    The priest was talking about "unconditional love". It's a very esoteric notion you find in Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, new-age, etc. "Discrimination" doesn't mean "prejudice" like the way most people use it nowadays, it means "to make fine distinctions between things/people, to use discernment". Instead of loving selected people, "true love" would be about loving the whole creation. You don't necessarily have to agree with it since it's a notion that doesn't make much sense from the ego's point of view, but it is said to be the highest level of consciousness reachable for a human being.

  • @Iconic_Scarab

    I think everyone has given enough takes on the discrimination scene so I will just throw in a fun fact about Christianity.
    In the bible there are actually 4 different words used for love (in the Greek, obviously there is Hebrew and Aramaic also): Eros (sensual or romantic love), Storge (familial/kinship sort of love), Philia (a brotherly/friendship sort of love), and finally Agape (God's perfect love). The last of these would probably best fit with what is being described in the show given the sort of unattainable portrayal of it. For example there is a point after Jesus' resurrection where he asks Peter "do you love me" 3 times and all 3 times Peter says that he does but the word used in Jesus' question (the first 2 times) is "agape" and the word used in Peter's response is "phileo". It isn't until later when Peter receives the Holy Spirit and is filled with God's love that he is capable of agape love. Another side note 3 times is also the number of times Peter previously had denied Jesus.
    Agape is also the word used by Paul in the often quoted 1 Corinthians 13 4-7: Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. It is also the word used in reference to "loving your enemies" in Matthew 5:44.
    There is more to this as well that you can read articles about but I would say this is a decent tidbit for a youtube comment. I am not sure whether there are multiple words for love in Arabic and therefore the Quran that relate to these. Gives me something to google about(:
    I liked how the show doesn't use a sort of "got it figured out" portrayal for Canute and just Christians in general and also isn't a bunch of verse quoting especially given what the literacy rate as well as the very limited availability of an actual bible would've been at this time in history. I don't recall whether we have actually seen the priest with a book or not but regardless I like how instead of Canute coming to some sort of scriptural conclusion here he just takes what he knows and has been told by the priest and his reaction toward what he has observed of the brutality of the world and being unable to really reconcile it all just comes to a frustrated determination that if men can't reach salvation through the trials of the world then he won't bother seeking it and will make his own paradise/kingdom on Earth and give meaning to the lives of those he rules as king. This obviously isn't a biblical conclusion but is most certainly a very human (potential) response to a crisis in faith like he is having. This is in contrast to his previous reaction when he got angry at the priest for expressing doubt in God's love in prayer which ironically actually was a biblical thing to do on the priests part (bringing his doubts and concerns to God). He has gone from a sort of new Christian fervor to reality punching him in the mouth and having to reconcile that with his faith to which the response can often be pulling away from it. It isn't what a Christian is "supposed to do" but Christians are flawed humans just like everyone else so the response makes sense.

    Remember Priest was so excited and surprised after brothers in Askeladd's group talked about Thors and his words about becoming a warrior... I know I'm a little late to the party, but the type of love that Willibald is talking about is called Agape. I'll grab the start of the wiki entry because it'll do a better job of explaining than I will.
    In Christianity, agape (/ɑːˈɡɑːpeɪ, ˈɑːɡəˌpeɪ, ˈæɡə-/;[1][2] from Ancient Greek ἀγάπη (agápē)) is "the highest form of love, charity" and "the love of God for man and of man for God". This is in contrast to philia, brotherly love, or philautia, self-love, as it embraces a deep and profound sacrificial love that transcends and persists regardless of circumstance.
    This is just another of the many MANY instances of Yukimura doing an incredible job of researching the setting and time period. The concept was a big topic of discussion among the clergy of the church, and I think it's a great touch to have a monk that is attempting to teach it.

  • @turbozed
    @turbozed 2 года назад +1

    Just my opinion but people who think Canute's transformation is unrealistic aren't picking up on the very subtle clues the writer provided.
    We are told that Canute had to be very shrewd in order to survive in the Royal court and that he was able to gain a following to support his succession to the throne.
    Canute needed to be cautious about making any concessions to Wales without authority, and the way to achieve it was to pretend to be feckless and unassertive. He's in essence a captive of kidnappers for most of the time we see him.
    Behind closed doors he's a lot more assertive, and you can already hear it in the tone and confidence when he's talking to Thorfinn during the rabbit cooking scene. He's also shown being very pensive and stoic from the start. And we'll see that he's had a lot to think about since he's clearly aware and conflicted by the Kings decision to take him into combat.
    Yes, the final straw was Ragnar's death and the priest provided some new source of 'love' which he decided to run with after losing everything. But he was always capable. He just now has a purpose and no more fucks to give.

    • @OmarioRpg
      @OmarioRpg  2 года назад +2

      lets also talk about Him witnessing Thorfinn (which by the way the writer very clearly gets a character to say they are pretty much the same age) be a man at such a young age and also i belive and i could be wrong thorfinn teased canute to try and get a response but yeah great points you made

  • @J-M99

    People complain about Canutes character development but its very common in the Bible to have moments like this where you realize how powerful God’s love is. Canute basically accepted no mans love can come close to God’s love. Comparing humans love to God is like discrimination because its not directed to everyone and every thing. Very deep concepts they touch on here.

  • @inthe_among_us
    @inthe_among_us 2 года назад +2

    From what I get is here love is our selflessness for others just like nature is to us it gives everything it has to others without any wants or greed to get more no selfish motives in helping others just purity in doing. Just like thors selflessly gave his body to protect others and ragar watched 62 ppl die for whom he cared the most or how canute without thinking of his own life confronted a disturbed Bjorn which could have harmed or even killed him, he selfless hugged him. We tend to think only abt themselves on the cost of destruction for other's

  • @SirPidu

    Ah my favorite episode, didn't even watch the reaction but going to bet that you'll love it
    Edit: Hell yeah, what a great episode.
    About the priest's speech about love and discrimination, he's talking about unconditional love, so Ragnar only loved Canute because of the condition of raising him, it's strange to use the word discrimination since it's being used like in reverse (but I think it's still fair to use it, because I think in its definition it's not exclusive to negative things).
    This type of love the priest is talking about has been foreshadowed since ep 1, to be exact since Thors dropped the sword in the sea and left the war to live peacefully and never hurt anyone anymore, Thors even gave up his life so that he wouldn't kill his enemy, Thors is really the only character who was closest to reaching this love the priest is talking about, that's why in ep 14 the priest was baffled by the story of Thors, it was an eye-opening experience for him.
    This is my interpretation tho, you're free to disagree with whether the priest's speech is right or wrong, but it does makes sense.

    This is one of my favorite episodes in anime. Canute’s character shift is the best. He’s done with seeking salvation and becomes determined to create his own paradise on earth. Not the most Orthodox BUT only crazy, eccentric, unconventional people become leaders. Because they are the ones who think outside the box and create change. Where is everyone else is stuck in cyclical thinking. “This way has worked before so it’s the only way” Nope!...

    VERY late to the party but let me share my perspective on this episode
    first of all what the priest said was 差別 which IS infact the japanese word for discrimination but discrimination in english has gained somewhat of a negative connotation to it
    差別 would be closer to differentiation in nuance
    as in Ragnar treated Canute differently to everyone else
    husbands and wives love each other MORE than everyone else so they treat eachother differently
    mothers treat their children DIFFERENTLY than others
    so the priest was basically saying, this differentiation of treatment isn't love and that in order for something to be true love it has to be unconditional, universal
    this can also be tied in with the christian concept of love where there exists 4 different types of love, agape (god's love) which is unconditional love being the highest of them all
    i hope this helps you understand this scene more
    sorry for being 2 years late
