@@ejobenza Even after the changes they went through, i think Ritual still has all the ingredients that define Ghost.. i love it. I discovered them via Ritual as well.. just a few months before Infestissumam was released.
Ghost borrows heavily from 70's occult movies like The Omen, Rosemary's Baby and hard rock/metal such as Blue Oyster Cult. If you understand these things, you understand Ghost.
Tobias Forge said that while the literal meaning of the songs is about Satan and all that stuff, the actual message of their songs is about human kind, life and its experiences. So your interpretation of the song is totally valid. For more groovy stuff you should check out From the Pinnacle to the Pit, that bass is great.
There's a video of one of their live shows where the play Dance Macabre and then Square Hammer back to back and it's amazing. Can't wait to see them later this summer!
I'm not a huge fan of Ghost but I do love how they portray the subject matter not only in lyrics but also in sound. Devil is supposed to lure you in, whisper in your ears and deceive you right? Well this music is catchy and kinda pop-ish pulling various people in and creating earworms with supposedly evil messages. I find that aspect of the band to be fascinating.
i agree. it was the first song i heard of them and opus eponymous is just one of those perfect albums you play from start to finish. i'm glad the band blew up like they did, they deserve it, but i'll always prefer that simpler prog rock vibe from back when they were so obscure no one knew who were behind the masks.
They did farewell mona lisa, and didn't like it ;) Would love them to do "Sunshine the werewolf" just to see their reaction on the DE-STROYAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!! part :)
Hell yes, if you're reading this LIV, Dillinger has a lot of poppy (more) mainstream sounding stuff that you guys would really like. Start with this one!
Yeah, I think if they do another DEP reaction it should be this song. After hearing Farewell Mona Lisa, it would be good to hear another facet of their sound.
I'm so glad you like this song! You should definitely check out some more of their stuff in future. It was the Cirice review video of yours a year ago that made me a fan of your channel!
Once again, you guys made my night... I was so fuckin excited to see you guys were doing this, and even more excited you enjoyed it! Also, you’re ability to understand these lyrics is incredible... Do Square Hammer next...
The first time I saw Ghost they opened for Opeth and Mastodon, now they're more popular than both of them. Kind of weird to see them grow so much since their first album. If you guys do another Ghost song I suggest Ritual or Square Hammer. Also Ryan I know you described yourself as a pre-metalhead but I'm pretty sure you'd also be a post-metalhead. If you guys do a reaction to a post-metal band like Isis or Cult Of Luna you'd definitely love how hard and raw their riffs are.
I have so much respect for you guys due to your capacity for understanding and your ability to listen without judgement and contribute your opinions so intelligently. You guys are amazing and I’m a huge fan!!! 🙏🏻
Your Cirice video was the first time I had heard a Ghost song. I fell in love with their sound and watched every video they had on RUclips so thank you for the introduction to a new favorite band. As for suggestions From the Pinnacle to the pit is one of my favorites. Square Hammer, Monstrance Clock, Rats, Dance Macabre and Ritual are all excellent songs with their own unique catchy sound.
Square Hammer or Dance Macabre should definitely be the next songs you try out. Both are very catchy, easy to groove to, and will get stuck in your head for days, in a good way.
If I ever ran into two in public....I’d be star struck:) I was raised to look deep into music. To speak about as many elements that music show us. My mom and dad taught this to me. If I had a million dollars, I’d give it to you two. Just to show my appreciation for your work. Thank you
Awesome video. Think another Ghost song you guys would really enjoy for both the instrumental and lyrical analysis is MAJESTY. Really incredible intro riff that grabs your attention every time.
This is the first reaction I’ve come across from you guys. I agree with your analysis, and even if I didn’t I’m subscribing, because y’all got a nice charisma that I dig. Keep up the good work!
how have they not done Chevelle yet?! just hope they don't do their overrated tracks like The Red or Send The Pain Below. An Island is a good suggestion, or Face to the Floor
1. You guys seem to be doing absolutely super in this new format and I love seeing that. 2. I highly recommend you give 'He is' a whirl. Very different from anything that I ever imagined hearing from Ghost, yet at the same time exactly something they'd do. It also has a really nice video to explore and analyse.
Get to some melodic death metal already! Arch Enemy - My Apocalypse Soilwork - Weapon of Vanity Scar Symmetry - Timewave Zero In Flames - Take This Life Solution .45 - For Aeons Past Dark Tranquillity- Nothing to No One Children of Bodom - Are You Dead Yet Disarmonia Mundi - Quicksand Symmetry That should get you started pretty well 👍👌🤘
You're talking "80s Grove", please check out their song "Dance Macabre". It's really heavy on the 80s feel, perhaps even check out the Carpenter Brut remix of Dance Macabre which is basically an 80s synth remix of it. Great stuff, guys. Loving your videos!
Kind of can’t believe you went for that. This is playlist about once a month or so for me - I enjoy the groove and the blend of evil with pop, and sometimes I’m just in the mood to imagine the Dark Lord coming up and blasting away all the people and crap that pisses me off. Great analysis, I’m still surprised how that went.
I appreciate the comment on how people often dismiss artists, bands and even whole genres because of their perception of the lyrical content. I'm guilty of this. I find myself writing off rap artists because they only sing about selling drugs, having money, etc. Which is not what I care to hear about. But, because of your videos it's made me take a step back and revaluate how I feel about rap. It's taken me awhile, but I've been giving artists a chance that I probably never would before. I'm glad you both are doing the same with metal :) Keep it up! You humble me. 💜
Ghost is very tongue-in-cheek with their lyrics. Tobias is influenced more by horror movies than any genuine Satanist sentiment. If you want to try a band that takes their Satanism a bit more seriously, try Behemoth. I recommend the song "O Father O Satan O Sun!"
I think even Behemoth isn't a full blown Satanic band, either. I think Nergal is an atheistic satanist, not entirely sure. Or maybe it was a Thelemist or some shit, I dunno lol. But, yeah. Now, Watain? Shiiittt, my guy. That's a different story. They 100% believe Satan is a real being & they're devout worshippers, basically. They go out of their way to do rituals and throw actual goat blood on people at their concerts. It's fucked, but their shit bangs lmao.
After going through all of Tobias’ interviews; as a Satanist myself-i think he is a Satanist for sure. Lots more typing would be required to explain myself-but its almost 4 am and i should just go to bed.
To hear a slightly different vibe than what you've gotten so far from Ghost, check out some of their older stuff like Ritual, which I consider one of their best mixes of the pop/metal sound, or Con Clavi Con Dio, which has a great groove I think you guys would dig. A lot of the other suggestions people have given are great, but are kinda similar to what you've already checked out.
I think Ryan would like; "Con Clavi Con Dio" "From the pinnacle to the pit" and "Faith"! George would probably like most of it, but songs to check out "Ritual" "Dance Macabre" "Square Hammer" "Rats". And please film it, haha :D
THANK YOU for giving credit to talent over content! That was such a refreshing take! Also Ghost's albums are kinda like giant horror stories about satan taking over. They play like satires on modern sociey's corruption and hypocrisy. But they also have tons of cool spooky content in the lyrics to make for an entertaining experience. Thanks for doing these videos guys, keep up the good work!
Agreed for best song. I find once the 4th song "See The Light" is done I just don't care about the album anymore. It's just seems to meander along after that.
Best description I've seen about this song and band. I particularly enjoyed your deep analysis about lyrics and their artistic meaning. George, if you liked this song, you will enjoy even more the dense stuff, not the pop stuff. I strongly suggest "Stand by him" from their very first album. Keep on!
Man Ryan, you totally nail how I feel about them. Perfect response. I don't really care about their lyrical content but I still absolutely love them. Do "Majesty" by them
You guys need a Ghost marathon. It's a band that grows on you real fast, and you keep coming back to. Their newest songs like "Mary on a cross" are amazing.
"If you had the chance today, you could have sold out too. Ain't that right sweet Saint Peter?" Had me rolling the first time I heard it. They do their research and they've kept to the message even through lineup and other changes.
Great video guys! I have been watching since Holy Wars and, as a metal listener, seeing you guys evolve and grow as metal heads has been really fun and thought provoking. Also I now have a better appreciation for rap from watching your other hip hop based videos as well. Is it possible you guys could review great songs through rap history, like you have been with metal, so we can share in that experience as well? A lot of that time frame is missing with some of us, and hearing your perspective on it might make us more appreciative of rap and hip hop as a genre. Just an idea.
My dudes, you HAVE to go to a Ghost concert! “Year Zero” is a concert highlight! Ryan, you want groove? “From The Pinnacle To The Pit” will be RIGHT in your wheelhouse. Other favorites from the band: Ritual, Spirit, Faith, Rats, Con Clavi Con Dio.....I could go on and on!
Going to see Ghost for a 3rd time in October! They are amazing live! Other songs you should do a reaction to of theirs are: Con Clavi Con Dio Elizabeth Square Hammer Prime Mover Majesty Ritual Monstrance Clock
Total respect and glad ya enjoyed it. As to my impression of the song, you were pretty spot-on with your analysis. I like to think of Ghost as existing in an alternate universe where the things they sing about are actually desirable. Kind of like an anti-hero centric story.. where bad is good and good is the villain. Peace
Great job guys!! I have only been a fan recently, and yeah the words on the surface typically isnt something i would listen to. But yea the catchiness and the music is amazing
Ghost is fantastic!!! The music is great and their live shows are amazing. I’ve seen them four times and the production value just keeps getting better. It’s pure entertainment for sure. See them live and you will have a really fun time.
Yeah, as a giant Ghost fan (seen them 5 times now) since this album cycle, this was definitely my favorite. But Ghost is incredibly diverse. You'll get a lot of recs for stuff on their newest album I'm sure, but if you're going to dive into Ghost, and you started with their most divisive song, I would move over to Meliora next. Arguably their best album (Cirice took a Grammy for them, for all that's worth), Meliora is the next evolution of their sound. From the Pinnacle to the Pit (talk about grooves) Cirice He Is Absolution (also got a great groove) Square Hammer Are good primers. The whole album rocks, but any of those would be a good next choice before moving onto their next (latest) disc.
I truly appreciate you gentlemen doing more Ghost. When I first found you guys here on RUclips I pestered you on most of your social media platforms to do a song by them. If Ryan wants a more metal song by GHOST maybe listen to their song "FAITH". If you guys want a catchy song bu them I highly recommend "Square Hammer" I couldn't stop listening to that song. Just about every day for around a year. I say watch the video version of it.
Please react to "Square Hammer" by Ghost! Super catchy and groovy!

Square Hammer and Dance Macabre is what they're looking for.

Tom Beal more like first 5
Yep
The chorus is great, but I think the intro is kind of cheesy.

Elle Martin and Faith

I always felt they borrowed more from The Hammer Horrors, or even the classic Universal Horrors of the 30's.
Baltzeg I was about to say that, Hammer all the way
I hope you guys get to check them out live, it's an amazing show!!!
Also Square Hammer should be next Ghost song you two do.
Fantastic live!

Absolution by Ghost is pretty good. ETA: The bass intro to that song is really groovy.
Absolution is one of my favorites of theirs.
So slept on because it's really prog rock-ish but it's a great song, one of my favorites.
If you guys are looking for another Ghost song, try Ritual. That song's groove is fiiiiire.
Absolutely!
React to Square hammer, ritual and he is please!!
You should listen to Square Hammer and Mummy Dust.
I'm pretty sure they won't like Mummy Dust tbh
But such a great song to cruise to.

AMEN to that!!!
