I’m not the lyricist, so I obviously don’t know precisely what the writer had in mind for this, but here’s my take: The song is about the heartbreak of being abandoned by someone you thought loved you as much you did them. The song opens very bitter and angrily, but as it goes on, it opens more. Talking of remembering better times with their lover in the past. He doesn’t want to be viewed as wrong for this, but he can’t seem to move on. Also in the chorus I think it can partly interpreted as putting on a mask, pretending not to care and not letting anyone see the reality of how hurt you are. That’s my fairly amateur interpretation of the lyrics.
well its definitely on the face a break up song. kind of going through the chaotic emotions after being abandoned. he starts off being angry and resentful towards them then admits he can’t get over them and is still constantly thinking of them, even when he tries to put on a face like he’s moved on, underneath he’s broken and far more affected than he’d like to make out he is or than he thinks the other person is. then there’s the constant feeling of self doubt and inadequacy, that everyone leaves him, that he’s ugly, that he’s a freak and no one will ever love him again.
