    I've had a very good friend since junior high, and I'm now 70. I have watched his mother's house change over the decades. In the 1970s she fell in love with the concept of an accent wall. She was so much in love with the idea that she often would make very wall in a room into an accent wall. She'd also layer the accents. In a den she heavily textures the walls. Then she antiqued the heavily textured walls. Then she put lattice work over the antiqued heavily textured walls. Once the realized that she could tuck artificial flowers into the lattice work, there was no stopping her. That room was like a screaming argument among all the students in an English as Second Language class.

    If Nick ever needs more engagement in his videos, all he has to do it play with the clock. Put batteries in it. Cover the clock's hands in a colored vinyl. Slowly change it's position so it's closer to the wall every video. Add a new clock. Who knows. All I'm saying is that he got the algorithm figured out 🤙

      When I was in college the dorm I lived in had a painting of the donor the dorm was named after, and throughout the year people would use tape and shapes cut out of colored paper to dress her up for the seasons. She was definitely dressed up like a leprechaun for a while. Maybe Nick could do that with the clock too?

    As someone who did sponge paint in the 80s, I warn you off lime washing. That texture is not covered by the next coat of paint. You'll have to sand the entire wall smooth when you, inevitably, get tired of the look. I'm your cautionary tale.

    • @AvecPoesie
      @AvecPoesie 5 дней назад +4

      I am truly not interested in the appearance of lime washed walls. The aesthetic agitates my gaze and, in my view, clashes with most elegant decor looks.

      I hear you! As an artist, I did some faux finishes and sponge / rag rolling on walls in that era for people. I am sure there was a lot of sanding/ paint stripping that happened in the 2000's.

      Is lime wash supposed to mimic stone? Apparently it's an ancient method. It does remind me exactly of sponge painting but with neutrals instead of bright colors. I think it's beautiful but it's definitely a new trend so I'd hold off unless painting is no big deal to you. Paint is one of the easiest ways to update a space

      I always go for small oil paintings of. nature in the bathroom. I don't like art covered by glass in my bathroom because glass glares, and can't be seen from every angle. I have a vintage 70's one I picked up at a resale shop for $30. I love it! They are actually pretty durable, too, so go for it! Just hang it where it won't be hit by water or hairspray.

      @@nancyrukavena6992 I have some small oil paintings my father (who was an artist did), but there is no way I would put them in a steamy bathroom. Still a conundrum - but working on it. 😊

      I have medical book illustrations in my bathroom. I still get compliments from people who realize that the art across the wall from the toilet is a diagram of the digestive system. I’ve always loved anatomical drawings and I use them as references for my art, so I have them throughout my house here and there. I also use the storage of towels and washcloths as decor, and metal baskets and mirrors. I think about when people are standing in the room, washing their hands for example, I think about what’s in their eye line and I put images there that are more detailed and benefit from being looked at up close, as opposed to putting those same pieces over the top of furniture where people aren’t able to get a better look at it

    I learnt so much about art and gallery walls by photoshopping my photos. I’d mock up gallery arrangements on the computer and saw what worked and didn’t work, how dark or light the photos had to be to work together, how much neg space in each photo was required, if splitting a photo in to 3 needs some cropped off each side to allow for the mat, frame and space between the photos when on the wall, the angles of buildings and whether they go together, etc. Cropping photos makes such a difference. I made up rules for me to follow to make a gallery classy.
    This made me a better artist. I took three ordinary pics of wet calla lilies, severely cropped them, made one light, one med and one in dark tones and boy did that look sensational. Never would have thought of that. I’ve gone through old 80s photos of a family Euro trip, taken out the tech, cars, people, etc. and made them timeless. I upped the light tones, minimalised the med tones and lessened a lot of the black. They look so good. I’ve also done portrait and landscape options, watercolour, sepia and B&W options. This is so much fun!
    I choose mainly cheap black frames with custom white mats and for the large pieces, custom black mat and frame.

Whether in the art itself or through how it’s matted/framed or the vignette it creates with the surrounding objects, I like art that draws attention to the negative space. It’s like the extension of the piece itself and becomes the most thoughtful, intentional, and provocative (yet also restful??) part.

      I'm uncomfortable with things hanging on the wall over my head when I'm sleeping. So I went for a lovely headboard. Just a thought.

    I like the rule of 2/3rds. If a piece takes up 2/3rds of the space it's in, you can take 1/2 of length and width to build the margin (1/4 on each side). Apply this to individual pieces to compose a gallery wall. So a 10"x12" piece will need 2.5" of white space on each long side and 3" on each short side, or an average of 2.75" all around.

      @gailwilliams5278 5 дней назад

      The 2/3 rule confuses me! It seems to say a 10 by 10 foot wall (100 square feet) should have 66 square feet of art. Which would be an 8x8 foot canvas or ‘gallery’. That’s HUGE!! If there’s a sofa and side table on that wall, covering say 25 square feet of wall space, you’re left with 75 square feet, and you ‘should’ have 50 square feet of art? Still huge. Seems like a 3 or 4 by 5 foot canvas etc (20 square feet) would be ample. What am I missing?

    Another great way of adding texture and sound proofing is quilts. We have some hanging behind doors to help with door handles hitting the walls. Vintage ones with history can be great but expensive (and kinda farmhouse look) but modern new ones can be made for whatever decor you want. Plus if you have a little old lady in your town (ask a local fabric shop) she’ll likely make you something for the cost of the fabric. It’s also super easy to incorporate any design styles (round edges, chevrons, modern, traditional, color schemes etc) and can get anything from throw pillows to wall hangings or throw quilt all out of a few yards.

    Speaking of walls, one of the first videos I watched of Nick's was talking about the idea of using dark color behind the TV to camouflage it. I had just moved to a new house and had really no option but to put the TV above the fireplace 😱 However, I painted a large section of the wall a deep maroon and hung the TV. I have had many people comment that they didn't think we had a TV in the room until I turned it on. It's so easy to miss with the dark wall, thanks Nick!

    The clock! Still set at 12:18!
    My mother, an artist, used to describe too much space between pieces on a gallery wall as "broken teeth"!
    I love the destination role from your grandfathers basement. They are beautiful things.

    I love the following idea for personalized wall art that I got from another RUclipsr (Evelyn Hernandez): Enlarge a personal photo or digital print (lots of shops on Etsy have them in a variety of categories) and then use Modge Podge or other decoupage liquid and "brush" the Modge Podge over the print. Try keeping the direction of the brush strokes in line with the pattern of the item you're "painting" (e.g.: for an orange, you would "paint" in a circular motion, for clouds, a wispy motion, etc.). This gives the print a much more authentic oil or acrylic look. Once the print has dried, frame it and hang. I've done this on a few projects and love the look! For enlarging the print, there are a number of resources that aren't expensive: Wal-Mart, Target, CVS, Walgreen's, Staples, etc. Google places near you. Good Luck creating! :)

      You can also buy a texture paint at Michaels in the acrylics paint section. I've used it on some reproduction posters, then framed for a more textured and realistic finished look. It's made especially for this purpose, sorry the name evades me at the minute. ✌🏽
