  • In the first of three special podcasts, I answer questions put to me by strength and conditioning coach Sean Seale about how exercise training causes specific physiological adaptations in the heart. We discuss left ventricular hypertrophy, and how the skeletal and respiratory pumps work to return blood back to the heart during exercise.
Sean is a Personal Trainer, S&C Coach and Performance Consultant based in Nyon, Switzerland. He splits his time between coaching private clients, getting teams in shape for their sports and performing physiological testing with endurance, team sports and CrossFit athletes. In his time off, he enjoys listening to podcasts, swimming in the lake and gardening.

You said that the quads and the gastrocnemius are responsible for 90% of the skeletal muscle pumping and that 65% of it is from the gastrocnemius so can we genuinely say that 25% comes from the quads or can we not conclude to that statement?

Yes, that's right. The Quads will make a smaller contribution of around 25%. The feet also make an important contribution in the form of the plantar venous pump. The aim is always to help force blood up against gravity and back to the heart again.

@@physiologymadeeasy216 are there certain percentages for the individual muscles amongst the quads so you know physiologically which one to train more for vascular reasons.

@@BerkshireHathawayCRE It would be impossible to say. I do not think this has been (or can be) quantified. It's safe to say that if you train your leg muscles as a whole then you are likely maximizing the efficiency of the pump.

When you get a chance Dr.Sandoo research these names (Ben Bikman, Robert Lustig, Jason Fung, Gary Taubes, Peter Attatia, and Mike Mutzel).
You should get in touch with each of these guys and invite them to your podcast. You'll get more views, and you guys can learn and build from each other. I'm begging you. Please look up these guys and watch their videos as well as get into contact with them.
