  • Whiskey in the Jar is one of the best known popular Irish songs, and a pub singalong favourite. In this fiddle lesson I show the basic melody, give some ideas for backup fiddle, a solo with ornamentation and drones, and a challenging solo for when you're bored with this song and want to give it some extra zing. Finally, a rendition of the Thin Lizzy/ Metallica version with some over-the top shredding!
A free pdf of the sheet music for Whiskey in the Jar is available to subscribers (see below). There are plenty more free video lessons on Irish fiddle tunes, songs and techniques elsewhere on The Fiddle Channel.

Chris , today I started to relearn this song for a St. Patricks Day Gig, I remember the Thin Lizzy version a long time ago in the 1970's , anyways I see you just posted this , it must be my lucky day ! thank you .What about the starting licks of the guitar ?(Thin Lizzy) . I hear a little bit of the guitar after watching the end solo .
do you think the fiddle could play them? they have nothing to do with the vocal melody but they add a lot .

Hi Gordon. If you've seen the whole video, you'll see I did the Thin Lizzy intro lick. Works well on the fiddle!
