    This is very helpful, thank you! I have a question for you maybe you can help me with in regard to a large Calathea Zebrina. Let's say that adding 3 cups of water to the pot gets the soil completely saturated to the point where water starts draining out of the bottom of the pot. Would it be better to completely saturate the soil like that every, let's say, 5ish days--or would it better to add something like 1.5 cups of water every 3ish days so that the soil is basically always moist but never "wet"? I appreciate your input. Mahalo!

      Hi Douglas,
      Great question! I have found l water my Calathea when the top soil is 2/3 dry or use a moisture meter and water 1 level before it hits dry on the meter. They like their soil to be moist and not soggy or dry. I don't have a watering routine as l found plants will be more thirsty in summer compared to say winter. So l water when l see if it looks a bit thirsty or test the soil moisture.
      How much you water your plant needs depends on the pot size, soil mixture and household environment. Over time you would be best to know how much and when to water as you get to know your growing conditions. Best thing to do is use enough water to get the soil moist but not soggy. Yes usually making sure the water drains through the drainage holes and getting rid of tge excess water is generally enough.
      Hope that helps and thanjs for your question and support. Happy Calathea Gardening ❤️

    Thank you for this video!! We are trying to figure out whats wrong with our beloved calathea. And everywhere we look we can't seem to find the answer, even after watching your video I'm still not sure what the problem is! It was repotted in August of last year and I was worried it was not going to like the new pot, but it LOVED it and exploded into new growth tons of new healthy leaves, for months it was doing great big bushy and happy. Then out of nowhere the leaves started to yellow or turn black and die. Almost all of the leaves died, but bizarrely it also started growing new leaves at the same time?? Now months later it has been reduced to a handful of leaves that have sustained but one by one each one is slowly turning yellow from the center of the leaf out. Yes not the edge, the center vein. (What???) We removed rocks at the bottom of pot thinking maybe that was somehow bothering it. It has no pests and no root rot (we checked) HEEEEELP!

      @PlantNationMinh  Год назад

      Hi Michael,
      Thanks for watching the video. Hmm that is unusual ! I doubt it's a humidity problem as the leaves going back in the center and not the edges. The only thing l can think of is a fungal disease. I would cut all the yellowing or back leaves away and any that have black spots and spray with a fungalcide. As long as the roots are healthy it should grow new leaves. Hope that helps. Happy Calathea Gardening ❤️

    Watered my calathea for the first time a few days ago and the leaves are yellowing on the inside part of the plant and I've noticed that the new growth is also growing in with browning on the leaves

    • @PlantNationMinh
      @PlantNationMinh  8 месяцев назад

      Hi, Sounds like Calathea was given too much water at once and soil went soggy rather then just being moist. Maybe use a paper towel and dry and draw some excess water from the soil. Happy Calathea Gardening ❤️

      @@PlantNationMinh thanks. The soil was bone dry so I decided to water just enough until I saw some drip from the drainage holes. I kind of got tired of looking at those leaves earlier so I chopped off every brown and yellow leaf I saw. So I can try to map out what's the issue now. This is my first one so we shall see. It's in my bathroom it's receiving medium indirect sunlight. I closed the ac vent in the bathroom. I have a prayer plant in here growing on the back of my toilet as well and it's been thriving ever since. This calathea put out so much new growth as well being in here. It's just the yellow and browning throwing me off but I had purchased this to see if I could care for it but I wasn't too big on it but I am going to try my absolute best

    • @PlantNationMinh
      @PlantNationMinh  8 месяцев назад

      @4xBlessed_newchapter If it's a new plant then it might be still adapting to your household conditions. Some Cathalea types can be more sensitive.
      Yes, best to cut off the brown leaves. As long as the roots are healthy new shoots will grow.
      You watered the Calthea correctly and it's in a humid area of the home. Perhaps make sure it's in a warm area as well.
      Happy Calathea Gardening ❤️

    Hi thank you for this video, I ordered a stromanthe tricolor received it last week have it in my bedroom noticed it had mealy bugs on Wednesday, Thursday did treatment
    First time dealing with pests
    1. Took of all the soil (found netting round roots)😤
    2. Cut all bad leaves off
    3.showered it down
    4. Mixed solution of neem, alcohol, dish soap, distilled water spray all over, washed of roots.
    5. Put roots in hydrogen pro and distilled water for 10 mins.
    6. Repot in new soil, worm casting, orchid bark.
    Didn't water till next day (Friday)
    Not sure what wrong now the leaves are staying down it not in direct sunlight. Any advice would help.

    Thank you for this video. I'd like to ask a question. My calathea has produced two new leaves and one of them (still unfurled) has gone black near the bottom. The other one is quite little (also unfurled) and seems fine as of now. It's in my room so it doesn't receive any direct sunlight and I keep in mind not to overwater it. What might be the reason?My plant has only one mature leaf right now as all of them died one by one in the winter 😢

    • @PlantNationMinh
      @PlantNationMinh  Год назад +1

      Hi Aditi , Thanks for the interesting question. If its already gone black yet unfurled it can be a sign of root disease especially if its dieing one by one or it's just too cold. Hope that helps, Happy Calathea Gardening ❤️

    Hi! I have an artificial light that my new prayer plant sits under. I went out of town and came back to the leaves droopy, a little yellow, but soft and it had two new leaves; on was large but still curl/unopened and yellowish, the other looked like a new healthy foliage. I had a friend water it once a week. Do you think the grow light caused the yellowing and dropping?

    • @PlantNationMinh
      @PlantNationMinh  Год назад

      Hi Tayelou
      Great Question!
      If the whole leaf is yellow or droppy can be a watering issue. If the edges of the leaves are yellow its the type of water ( chemicals from tap water) or humidity.
      If patches of yellow it can be the light is too intense.
      Hope that helps . Happy Calathea Gardening❤

    I’m so confused. My calathea leaves are yellow/ brown, the leaves have curled and become droopy but I’m only using distilled water, kept it away from the sunlight and my soil is not dry as well. Is it overwatering or underwatering? I recently repotted the plant and changed the soil because the water was not draining out of the holes and I was a bit worried- there’s no root rot found while changing the soil . It’d be great if you could me help out!

      Hi Denisha, sounds like your doing everything right for your Calathea. It might be adapting after being repotted and losing some of the leaves. I would make sure it's in a warm area to help it along. Hope that helps, Happy Calathea Gardening ❤️

    The back of my calethea has tiny little dots. Its started happening after I repotted it in new soil and now the leaves are turning yellow and drying out on the corners.
    Im new to house plants and i dont really know what’s going on

    • @PlantNationMinh
      @PlantNationMinh  Год назад

      Hi Purnima,
      The dots: check for fungal disease or pest
      Yellow leaves: usually from overwatering
      Dry leaf edges: low humidity or chemical burn from the type of water used
      Hopefully that helps! Happy Calathea Gardening! ❤️

      Oh no sorry to hear about your plant. Neem oil is a product to use to kill insects on plants at a diluted concentration it can also be used to clean leaves and deter insects from infecting the leaves. ❤️
