- There has been many complaints about the ride characteristics of the new KTM 690 and Husqvarna 701 models in the latest Euro5 form.
We went to visit Chris at CJS Racing to finally sort the fuelling on Greg's bike and also check my 690 fuelling for good measure!
Huge thanks to Chris for his expertise and for explaining everything for the camera.

Nice to hear from a professional approving other colleagues' job and not offering additional tuning when its not needed. Very refreshing seeing such a honest approach. nicely done !
Wow......Chris knows his stuff. The way he explains the how and the why of engine performance characteristics is really interesting, top bloke.
These videos just make my Sunday morning viewing sorted.
Great work again Chops. 😊👍
Yes he's great isn't he!
Extremely informative episode. Did not realize that lean fuel/air ratios were needed for catalytic performance but does make sense. Amazing the power that the 690 motor can produce. Thanks for posting👍.
No I didn't really either Paul until Chris told me 👍
‘Running lean for the CAT to work’ isn’t true, or has been explained’poorly’, fueling is normally approximately 10% richer than a non-cat fitted engine… this is to provide the energy to ‘lite’ the cat and keep it running hot and clean… too lean or rich is bad for the cat both in performance of its emissions and if rich it will over heat and melt.
The lean condition they are talking about is only at lower rev’s on acceleration where being lean means a crisp throttle response as long as its not too lean where it will stumble and or not accelerate… If its rich the throttle will be lethargic, ‘woolly’ and sometimes feel like the throttle is an elastic band.
Think Chops should do a ‘Tea’ channel’, he knows how to make a properly cuppa and by the looks of it there are loads of people out there that need some ‘training’ 😂
Dark tea and or full fat milk in the tea 🤢
The tune they did should make the bike a lot more relaxed when just cruising and a lot more lively and less gear dependent 👍
Chops, think you should get them to trim the tune to the bike, even though it may be only a couple bhp change, its the throttle response and ride ability that will improve lot.
I may be picking up a 2022 SMC-R soon, so once ran in, will be taking a trip down to see this lovely Gent - looks like he's the boy for this - cracking video as ever Chopsy !!
😎👍🇺🇲
I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the 690.
I've only had my 2021 for a few weeks and just a handful of rides.
It came with everything. Full exhaust, commander, air box . The full kit.
I really just wanted a bit of a upgrade to the DRZ SM.
I certainly got it.😏
Due to weather and other things like a fresh rear on wet roads and so on.
I haven't even had a chance to run it hard.
But the couple of times I could stab at it. Wow.
I sold my nicely mod'ed DRZ to a coworker and friend.
Can't wait to run the two together.
He's a new rider and I'm the "old super bike guy".
Should be fun😈
John you are a legend , thanks for letting us know about Chris.
I popped down Cjs racing today and met Chris and he sprinkled his magic on my 701 and it was certainly worth the money.
Really nice bloke and definitely felt like my bike was in safe hands.
Thanks again chopsy , keep up the sterling work.
Welcome buddy 👍
How much was it to get it remapped at CJS looking at getting mine done when I finally install my rottweiler airbox
A great informative video for us numpties with zero knowledge of mapping , enjoyed watching, again your enthusiasm is top. ( content you enjoy making for us to see)
Thanks Mark 👍
Always a win when the brothers in law, team up on a vid. So great to see Gregarious get some massive gains on his KTM. And yours is already a #MeagaMachine. So a win win all around. Cheers, Chops and Greg.🍻 #TeamLCR 🔝🎬🎥
Haha thanks Mike 😊 👍
Great video, could've watched a 2 hour version of that - a bit of tech, a bit of humour and a dyno (and cup of tea debate), a certain winner ! Maybe a follow up video on Greg's bike - what a gorgeous torque curve his bike had 😍 Keep them coming Chopsy, need great videos to get through this crappy weather........
Yes absolutely Nick we will get out riding together and show more of the bikes! It's probably going to be spring now though... glad you enjoyed it 👍
I bet Greg's bike feels mega now 😍 thanks Chopsy, I'm not on ebay looking at 701s/690s 😂😂
Absolutely nothing but respect for you John.
You're a top bloke and i love your channel.
So much that your health atm, worries me.
Maybe some leaning towards your recovery in future videos. Cycling distance etc.
That way you're broadening your channel demographics and improving your state of mind too.
If i could've expressed this privately I would've. No intention to embarrass you sir.
Bloody love these videos Chopsy! Chris has just done mine now. Awesome!
The catalytic converters need a 14.7 mix because they effectively finish the parts of the combustion process that didn't happen in the cylinder. It doesn't like a variant mixture, because it can poison the catalyst.
The throttle mapping does the same thing that throttle cams do on traditional throttles, it just does it in a way that varies at different RPM. If you look at the throttle actuator on a cable throttle you'll see that the diameter varies around the perimiter of the cam, this changes the amount of throttle you get at the blades compared to the twist grip... Same thing has existed since carbs. :)
80bhp at 7400rpm dropping to 79-78bhp till rev limiter and 82nm at 6300rpm, 26hp 62nm at 3070rpm, 59hp 77nm at 5500rpm
rotti air filter, tekmo ti header, 21' akrapovic silencer, ecu tune + pcv fine tune done at Tovami in Goes, Netherlands on my 2021 690 smc-r.
Definitly a crazy improvement over stock.
Fantastic results 👏
What an extraordinary video! Thank you for sharing! I own a 690 and I love it!
I bought another 701 off the back of your build with a full Tekmo system (and a stage 2 DNA waiting to go on) and fuel optimiser dongle. I was gutted to learn from Dynojet that the PC V doesn’t adjust ignition on the euro 5’s and that currently they have no plans of making a new PC. But watching this gives me hope as mine is running crap without a tune. An ECU flash seems like a good alternative. Thanks a million I’ll give em a ring 💪👍
Yes exactly! PC and dongle combination might not work.. seems conflicting info out there hence why we went to Chris
@@LambChopRides what about with PC 6 now?
Mapping these bikes is essential not just for fun but crucially for safety. It's money very well spent - if any one has any doubts just stop thinking about it and get it done, you'll probably save money on broken bike parts and time off work because of injury!
Just a question, but why for safety reasons?
@@Vince27. the engine will cut out when you move off at for example a junction and you'll find yourself on the ground with traffic approaching and you under the bike - happened to me, broke my foot too. These bikes are great but they need remapping.
What your saying Ed has happened to me, I was crossing a duel carriageway I entered the central reservation there was a hill crest to my left so you have to be sharp eyed checked double checked went to pull off and it cut!!! A van was steaming over the hill thankfully he swerved and missed me, at 50-60mph I wouldn’t stand a chance, my bike will definitely be going to Chris for re-map and anyone else looking to buy these Amazing bikes I would factor in the cost of this essential work.. don’t hesitate
DNA / arrow for the win .... thats what i have found when looking at my re,map on the tenere good to see it reflected on the ktm
I's say DNA (3rd of the price of Rotti) and Tekmo are for the win
@@davecornish6716 is there a substantial reason for this other than boosting CRTs sales? 😊(with respect)
@@SuperPlasterMaster nope, its a free world and there's plenty of other pipes and induction systems about to choose from :)
@@davecornish6716 I wasn’t trying to be rude. I’m genuinely looking for good reason for this combination.
I have already bought a titanium Tekmo header from you but I went for an arrow slip on, purely cause I preferred the look of it.
I am looking to get the DNA air filter and either flash the ECU or buy a PCV (most likely both from you)
I just like to know all the information before I make a decision is all 👍🏻
@LambChopRides great video. I have just bought a 2023 690 and will be visiting Chris in the future. Can you let me know which Arrow pipe Greg went for, please. I’m looking at the TI with the Carbon end cap. Chris has warned about making sure it’s the non Cat versions. Loving the channel and looking forward to my adventures on the SMCR.
Great news you will love it! I think it's the arrow RACE Tech version. It was bought from Rottweiler Performance so check their site to confirm its the same one 👍 I don't think any of them have a CAT anyway..
So awesome having those two bikes together. Although I would’ve been tempted to get as much out of my bike as possible, and let that wizard get his mitts on it for another 3-4 hours😂
This is making me lust after carburettors and cables lol! Interesting video bro 👍🏼
Very true! You literally need to be a software engineer to map bikes these days!
Didn't understand most of that 🤔 but, at least Chris does. Enjoyed that.
Hehe thanks 😊 👍
Greg's bike must be way more fun to ride now........and your PC5 generic map pretty much on the button with your mods LCR.
Enjoyed the vlog and thank you.
Thanks Iain 👍 yeah Greg's been out in the dry and says it incredible now!
It’s not a generic map. It’s a map for his specific mods done by Rottweiler performance. It was just not done specifically for his bike
@@AD690smcr that is true 👍
@@AD690smcr Ah thanks AD.
Great vid i just picked up my new 690smcr friday and this vid is perfect timing, once its run in had 1st service i will be on the blower to CJS, Chopsie wheres the MARVEL Type intro gone !!! that was such a cool intro and never seen anyone use anything even remotely close to yours ! how about a vote for which intro you use ! remember the customer is always right heheheh lmao...great vid as usual chopsie.
Ah you need to watch the garage series to get that intro 😁👍
Incredible the power that engine can put out must be an absolute blast to rip about on 👊
Yes they are an absolute scream once modified
best video ever seen until today on ecu tune, how and why ? A+++++++
Gary a good guy I uses him here in Ireland
Chris mapped my 2018 GSXR 1000R last year.
I must admit, I was wincing when he was drilling into the headers on my 2 grand titanium Akrapovic exhaust 😂
Haha yes same here on my H2 but well worth it
Great to see improvements on Greg's bike and confirmation that yours is running well. So many keyboard experts on these bikes it gets a bit confusing 😫
Nice one John been waiting for this. I’m going to get mine booked in with Chris. I’m local to him. Mines running same as yours but with the dna filter and plate. That’s full tekmo system, power commander with map for full tekmo map and Rottweiler induction kit. Be great to see what it makes and if it needs improvement.
Now we need a after vid in the dry!!
Yes highly recommended Dave! 👍
I looked into different airboxs before settling for one similar to Greg's (mine is a MWR filter) and that's because I learnt you sacrifice some mid range for top end with the rottweiler! Looks to be true after watching this, but brilliant figures for you both 👌🏼. Another ace video Chopsy, keep it up mate.
Oh that's interesting Luke and exactly what we saw! 👍
How is your experience with the MWR-filter? I'm searching for a good filter to run on my '22 690 + getting the ECU tuned.
I was really glad to hear the set up you have with the power commander V was the job out the box, I got the same for my 701 from Rottweiler after watching your earlier videos. It's nearly time to pull it out of the garage and service for the summer.
Enjoyed that chops, that's the best singles club to be in.
Sadly an ex member booooo, barrrrrp. 👊
Could you make a video riding Greg’s bike after the tune? Also, I’m liking the new intro
Very interesting Chops. Really enjoyed that. Interesting to learn about what additions makes an engine more powerful or not, as well as what boosts mid & peak power. I also didn't think the air filter alone & shape of the exhaust could make that much difference either. Everyone's an expert on every forum these days regarding engine tuning but there's lots of incorrect info, ignorance & myths out there. Shame you couldn't get more out of yours I guess but great to know it's running at optimum peak performance.
Yes absolutely was great to compare the differences with the spec wasn't it 👍
Great explanation of what's going on by your Tech Choppsie . I can almost understand what's happening , almost ha . Best Dyno room explanation I've heard . Definitely want to hear how it she runs .
Great stuff! I just got my KTM 390 dyno’d and what a difference it makes. It was well worth the money.
Thanks for sharing.
moreover, it is important to point out that:
- the throttle body is really small, 50mm for a 693cc.
the 56mm of the Superduke GT would be more suitable for increased power
- the injector is that of an exc-f 450 from 2015, which is less efficient than that of an exc-f from 2023 and STILL less efficient than that of an Sx-f 450 from 2023, at the time to say that for a 693cc...
- the camshaft does not allow maximum valve opening, and is sized for low revs ~6000rpm
- the valves are made of steel, while the titanium valves exist
- on the 766 version, it was still possible to add an oil cooler to improve cooling, lubrication (the big pump helps the small one) and a slight gain in oil capacity
the 690 is easily capable of exceeding 100hp, it was already the case in 2009 with the first version with its shitty lubrication.
autemps to say that in 2022, it would remain as reliable and enduring as a cross.
frequent emptying and segmentation (and again..) but a fire engine
Very interesting and informative video - good laugh too 👍 Gregs bike revs up like a madman! Cheers guys
Thanks Rickky 👍
I had a very similar experience when I had my 2020 smcr with Rottweiler bits on the dyno at PDQ in Maidenhead - the ‘stock’ Rottweiler map was pretty much spot on. Hats off to PDQ though they were still able to find more power throughout and improve response going from a closed to open throttle.
Brilliant video 👍. Just shows how much difference a proper tune can make . Worth every penny. I had my SX flashed and Dyno tuned transformed bike . Can also only recommend this path . Thanks Chops for sharing.
Good to know and comfortable to know the bike is safe to run.
I have the Tekmo header with Arrow slipon and DNA airfilter with open lid, also did around 70hp after tuning but made 1hp more with modified dB-killer in the exhaust!
Nice gains for Greg, I'd say that's more then worth the asking price.
Also good to get confirmation on yours that it's running sweet Chopsie.
YEEEESSSSS CHOPSY - I thought you sold the 690 cos didnt see it for ages. i did a whole 701 build inspired by your smcr series, got all the kit.... youre the reason im broke lol
😂that makes 2 of us
Haha yes still got it! Much more content next year on it now Greg has one too 👍
@@LambChopRides hahaha SWEET m8 looking forward 👍👍👍
I've got this airbox on my mt07 and power in the midrange had a big jump on mine also. Worth installing!
Great video Chops. Nice insight to what it takes to properly map a bike. I thought we'd have a bit of "Tekmo, Tekmo!" song going on though?! 😂
Haha oh yes forgot about that 😄👍
lol when he said akra should have blasted that
Great to see the sumo on the dyno chopsy, sound great just bought a 701 and have fitted the DNA filter and plate also wings can ! Couple of dongles so can't wait till spring to see how it runs it's a 2019 Euro 4 . Was running very lumpy at low revs so hopefully better now 👍 now get back to getting the garage up and running .👍😁😁
I thought flashing these things was impossible nowadays. That's why I run mine with PC5.
I've got 78bhp at the rearwheel though. 🙂
DNA stage 2 airfilter, no cat with Leovince midpipe and Mivv endcan. I'm happy!
Thank you for this! Now it's time for a spin!
Not sure if it's possible with Woolich or other software but it possible the way Chris does it 👍
@@LambChopRides Not sure what that Woolich is! But luckily there is Chris too sort things out! 😄
Great power from a single.want one!
Great informative vid Chops. D Wood Racing geezer always said the old 990 SD airbox was a good design, just ditch the cat exhaust & add a BMC air filter. I've Akraprovic cans & Akra map. & I'm happy. Halfway house between yours & Greg's. Had the old 640 SM & a 950SM too. Keep looking at 690's tho ...
That's so cool, he's about 10 minutes from me. Might get my GS done!
I have the 701enduro and would not want a hot tune because it would further shorten fuel range (which is already on the short end and my 701 is set up for ADV use)... but for the supermoto that tune must have really put a smile on his face.
Yes it's incredible!! 😁👍
Very interesting once again , both of you looking in to the workshop like kids looking at all the sweets 😋 in the shop window grinning 😀
Haha we were 😁👍
An amazing wealth of knowledge on display. Will we have the equivalent means to adjust the performance of our all electric bikes I wonder?
makes me feel better about my rotty tuned pc6 im installing!
I'd love to have a 690 but begin a short arse I'd struggle to touch the floor ..... brilliant video
Really interesting video chops and builders tea is the way to go not that milky stuff bikes look great 👍
Great to see some professionals at work. Really interesting.
Professional... not sure me and Greg can be included in that 😁
Fantastic video thanks Chopsy! Inspired me to go one more than just a slip on with my euro 4...
Yes certainly worth it!
Lots of info there! Shows you did a good job with the ultimate build then chops!
Yes indeed! 😁👍
This video makes sense when I was at the dynojet they put that thing directly in the exhaust. And yes he told me he get some strange feedback from it.
Ah OK that makes sense 👍
The lunacy of all regulations is that the engine tune is based on cat performance not fuel economy. My ATAS DC had dreadful economy at 20 mph crawling around to stop being popped on a camera yet way better at 40 mph and positively frugal at 70 mph. My 890 Adventure averaged close to 100 mpg at a steady cruise controlled 50mpg yet in town lucky to get half that even with gentle throttle use. As ever we’re controlling the wrong thing for the wrong reason.
Chris mapped my hypermotard and it’s now awesome 👍
Which version David?
2007 1100s
Bro chopsy needs to bring back hypermotard content
Yes definitely 😊
OK brilliant he's doing mine when completed obviously 😁
5:14 that arrangement looks interesting. I'm assuming there's enough exhaust gases flow through the sensor. is that stem sticking out sort of a vent to allow the flow? is it a valve stem off a wheel or what? I guess if it wasn't there, the gases wouldn't be able to reach the sensor on that adapter?
It’s been a while since Iv watched the channel, looking like you put on a few pounds there mate me too so don’t worry 😉 about it.
Good video lamp chops. Tune ecu is ktm compatible.. Iv useyit on a triumph.. That guy was cool thou bit if an attitude..
Hi Lamb Chop, did Greg ride about before with the DNA fitted or just the journey to the dyno? Cheers dude 😊
15 at 3000-4000, same utter jerky clatter bike. awww, you fixed it, waaw thats pro
All the best Mr chops
Great vid
Euro 5 is a complete and utter sham especially when you hear an A380 fly overhead whilst doing this great tech conversion.Great tech, thks.
GREAT VIDEO AS ALWAYS CHOPSY!!
I love all the vids you have done on your SMCR they were great aid and got me excited when I was first looking to buy my own Smcr, at the start of this year. So thanks for all the great content!!
I have a question though.
Am I right in thinking John, that the only way to improve the performance on the euro5 (at least in The closed loop section) is to flash the ECU? (Like Chris has just done to Greg’s bike)
As apposed to installing a Power commander 5 like you have done on your bike (Euro4).
Can I also assume that a ECU flash would void my warranty?
Looking forward to seeing some videos of yours and Greg’s bikes side by side to see that middle and top end power difference 🛵🏍💨
Thanks buddy 👍 Well yes there has been some discussion about this and I'm not convinced you can use a PC on the Euro5 bikes. You have to fool the ecu to ignore lambda inputs and allow the PC to adjust fueling otherwise you are just fighting the closed loop. Some say their dongles work on euro 5 some say they don't. To avoid issues this is why we flashed Greg's bike 👍
Yeah I have the 2022 smcr with an arrow end can.
I also have dongle from Crt and the titanium Tekmo header pipe but I havnt fitted them cause I have read alot about the dongles not really working and I worry about the header pipe effecting the warranty.
I’d love to get some more torque and power at lower revs.
Mine just isn’t as snappy as the older models.
It just will not wheelie in 3rd gear!
All I've seen for ages is flashing gives much better results than a Power Commander. It seems the Power Commander more than held its own. I have a PC-III on my track gsxr and it makes it easy to swap maps if have to put the baffle in or change the can due to noise
No you are right. The reason for the ECU flash here over a PC5 as that the PC5’s don’t work on the new Euro5 690’s or 701’s. Developing a custom map and flashing is the only option at the moment. Cheers
It's probalby down to what they pointed out - the ECU has target AFRs it tries to achieve. you might trick the ECU about the data it gets from the sensors by using PC but at the end it will still check if the AFR matches the target numbers. without disabling the o2 sensor I think there's not much you can do using a piggyback like power commander.
@@plllot9713 Yet it was bang on for Chops.
So exactly how many cups of tea did you drink in total on the day? Milky with sugar is the best. Red Rose or PG Tips. Great video. Traded in my 690 SMC on a Beast 2.0 so its too late for me but still very interesting. I think you may have come to the end of the trail for 690 upgrades….blinged out now! 😄
Also on 4 strokes carburetors with membrane, the grip twist doesn't correspond directly to the carburetor opening
Really interesting video so many nuggets of info! However, Costa a great cup of coffee? Come onnn guys! Creamy, maybe…
Been waiting for this! Gonna get mine booked in, do the map buttons 1 and 2 still work the same after the ecu tune?
I think map 1 will be standard.. changes only on map 2 I think...

Hi, just found that nice video ! Sure I'm gonna have my Euro 4 SMCR remapped now... maybe you can help me : I have a rottweiler fuel dongle for the moment, so I guess it will be useless?! Do I have to put my lambda sensor back (as it was originally) before the dyno mapping?! TIA

Great video Chops /Gregorio so I’ve got a brand new 22 701 enduro. So I’m thinking Greg’s setup would make sense for off reading on mine ,or am I wrong
It would work perfectly too so I would go for it. Will improve the bike enormously
@@gregtufnall6276 I have the same model and year as you and would love to get these power gains low down. Did having the ECU flashed worry you regarding the warranty?
@@SuperPlasterMaster not personally no. My bike is reliable and so I’m hoping I’ll not have issues anyway. The bike ran so lean down low in the rpm, I was more concerned this in itself was causing damage
@@gregtufnall6276 that does make sense. Maybe next year I’ll bite the bullet.
I have the same tail pipe as you and the same header as chopsy.
I was gonna get the Rottweiler air filter but I might go for the dna.
What made you go for that one rather than getting the same as chopsy’s?
@@SuperPlasterMaster considering it too after watching this. My Enduro feels on or off at low revs in techy bits, really snatchy so you have to ride the clutch. Sounds a bit like the map could smooth that out.
Proof that a Power Commander correctly mapped is as good as a reflash. Plus its a 5min DIY job to remove if you want to make a claim or sell it when you no longer have the bike, so its not 'dead' money thats lost.
Totally agree with you Dave but what if it’s a EURO5?
Is a Flash not really the only option?
I’d prefer not to void my warranty and always have the option to put everything back to standard.
but what other option is there when the closed loop section will always over ride a Power commander 5? (With the EURO5 Engine)
@@SuperPlasterMaster inline fuel optimiser allows a euro5 bike to run a Power Commander but it needs the right map and this is where it matters and CRT can supply the right map.
Do you have any proof that the PCV and the fuel optimiser works?
Not to say that I don’t believe what your saying but I have read so much regarding the Fuel optimiser and the Power comander 5not working on the EURO5.
A video showing a Dyno run of a EURO5 Smcr 690 or a 701
with the PC5 and CRT’s fuel optimiser and Map would be a great way to prove that they all work together and would put a lot of speculation to bed for many that would love to know for sure.
Yet there doesn’t seem to be any videos fitting that description. (That I have managed to find at least).
If there is such video I can assure you that I will be the first to buy a power commander and map from you at Crt.
Perhaps Lamb chops rides would be interested in making such video if you would be willing to supply the parts and I was willing to pay for the dyno?
My dyno guy sold his 690 after lockdown when he wrote maps for every pipe, induction kit and delete kit we could get hold of. I’ve sold 30+ mapped PCV to euro 5 owners without any issues. The only problem I’ve had is when the customer has gone off and tried to sort his own map.
An optimiser is cheap so buy one and if it’s not working for you send it back for a refund
You’ve got nothing to loose
sumos on tour next ? loved the 701s on tour.
Haha now your going back some! Just rewatched it still funny 🤣👍
Great video man! Do you think it is possible to improve the mix on a 701 Euro4 without Power Commander? just flashing the ECU?
Yes flashing it you don't need the Powercommander 👍
Result mate 👌
Great video thanks,
Is the 690 with the power commander is euro 5 and does it work on the close loop just with the dongel????
Thanks
Nice tip about not using the first couple of runs for comparison. Question: If you still need a remap after installing a power commander why not just remap the bike without a power commander.
If we had time (it was 430 when we finished gregs) I probably would of said let's do mine but as said in the vid wasn't worth the efforts working late
No way Chopsy builders tea is where it's at! Lean milky tea is rank we want to taste the tea ....🤣🤣
Just to satisfy my OCD - can you rub the paint on the grip off afterwards?
Haha of course, washes right off 👍
Chops, can you put the main mods done on Greg's bike please? Ie. Air filter, exhaust?
Great video! Did Greg’s and your bike have the DB killers in?
Cheers
Nope mapped with them removed as that's how we ride them
@@LambChopRides thanks 👍
All these airfilters and parts you are using should fit on my 2020 690 Enduro R as well right Chopsy ? I am seriously thinking about converting my 690 Enduro to an SMC this winter
Is it true that a Power commander is the only way to map these bikes ? I have seen you done it to all of your 690/701 bikes so I guess that is the only way ?
