Ashen is an open world co-op action RPG about a wanderer in search of a place to call home.
As you adventure through Ashen, you'll occasionally encounter other players in a massive open world, akin to the passive multiplayer of Journey. It's up to you to decide how to deal with them - fight together against evil, invite them into your party or simply ignore them.
Ashen is faithful to the "souls" genre of stamina-based combat, introducing players to a punishing yet satisfyingly vast world. But here’s the twist - no two gameplay experiences are alike. Whether you’re exploring bogs, investigating a fjord or pillaging an old palace, where you are at any given moment will dramatically alter the course of your adventure. It's a brutal open world; you're just living in it.
Ashen has no shortage of dangerous encounters, from hostile enemies to indigenous creatures. You'll be rewarded for studying the environment and its inhabitants, planning your adventure rather than flying by the seat of your pants. The flora and fauna within the world aren't just fantastical; they're often fatal. Each confrontation, no matter how trivial, has potentially dire consequences.
As you discover survivors, you'll have the choice to invite them to your Town. But these aren't mere adventurers - they're potential collaborators, bringing a plethora of crafting skills, from blacksmithing to foraging expertise, in tow.
Famed fantasy author Mark Lawrence (The Broken Empire trilogy) and renowned band Foreign Fields collaborated closely with the development team at A44 to craft a cohesive and unique narrative and sound.

Hey Cowboy, I’ve been watching your channel since you did your original play through of Dragon’s Dogma all those years ago.
I don’t comment a lot, but I just wanted to say that I just love the fact that you still do complete play throughs alone on here!!
So many of my other favourite you tubers (Ruri) just stream now. I don’t mind streams now and again, but I really enjoy kicking back after work and watching one of my favourite you tubers just play a game on their own without any live audience or interruptions and just share their thoughts and surprises out aloud.
Keep up the great dedicated work!! :-)
Completely agree with the review. This game came out of nowhere for me, I didn't know anything about it when I downloaded it. I had no expectations other than when I looked it up it said it was Souls like. They could definitely improve and refine the game but it's a great base to build on. I would love to see a follow up.
SaintKines Definitely an enjoyable experience
@@wesleywinklaar : Enjoyable but not even close to Dark Souls 1, 2 or 3 in quality. Sorry but I played Ashen for a full 60 hours looking at it hard and hunting out items, weapons and trying to co-op. Helping noobs with new characters and taking senior players through areas after skulking around the hubs. This game is fun if we're talking RPG basics but please stop comparing to SoulsBorne. The weapons, movement, Co-Op, art style and world are "good" but Dark Souls is a different class altogether. The difference between college journalism and actual New York Times journalism. Night & day. These games like Ashen copy basic superficial parts but that's all it is. If you doubt what I'm saying... please boot up Dark Souls 3 again. You'll know exactly what I mean in a few seconds.
Bruh Dark Souls 3 is by far the worst game From Soft has made. Ashen at least tries to be original, while DS3 literally has nothing but a huge budget for big areas and flashy visuals, absolutely no substance in either world building or gameplay.
Stormhavoc : What have you been smoking? Dark Souls 3 is a masterpiece. There’s no reason for me to qualify that. It is. Ashen is not original. It’s not even good. It is a go cart when compared to the suv that is Dark Souls. Weapons are better and incredibly varied in DS3... let’s not mention spells, pyromancy and miracles. Ashen is short, cheap, derivative and unimaginative. Just say no to drugs. They mess with your perception.
@@JayJordanJuly no ds3 is no masterpiece same with ds2 . ds1 , demon souls are good but bb and sekiro are masterpieces . Take nioh and sekiro for example now THEY are masterpieces
The commentary over the credits music really gives the review an emotional feel!!! Awesome series.
Eila was probably my favorite voice acting; the voice and dialogue were so funny. The only acting and character that didn't take themselves too seriously. That said, this was a great playthrough and a surprisingly enjoyable watch of a game.
Loved this play through. Given the price i think this title is well placed with your 8.5. Lots of things could have been done as you said. This is a title that I will remember. Many I don't.
Great review. Great walk-through, watched them all. Great game, definitely a sleeper & must play for any souls fans. Cowboy - you did a great job of narrating this series… Felt like I was playing right along with you. Unusual to get that sense of connection. Kudos!
One thing this game did remarkably well is, that I haven’t seen commented on elsewhere, that it very nicely regulated the difficulty based upon your progression through the game. I really never under powered or over powered… Felt just right. Thanks to the no leveling up which was a very gutsy but worthwhile pay off. In addition to the exploration which was outstanding. You could turn off the AI, but who would… Exploration with the AI characters was a great addition. Looking forward to their next game.
Thanks for the full playthrough cowboy. Great series for a gem of a game. Bravo. Im on 2nd playthrough then im going for children of sissna difficulty
Thanks for the uploads of this, I bought it after about episode 11, edit: just completed the game. This game was unexpectedly great fun I want a sequal
Awesome series Cowboy, completely agree but remember it was only a $40 game and feel the content we got it was well, well worst it's price. I love the soundtrack and the art style, Hope they do a sequel.
Can always depend on & connect with your reviews. Once again, well done!
Great series thank you for taking the time to play it.
I am actually enjoying this game way too much, I am not a die hard DS3 or DS2 but the one thing you mention is the companion. So even if I am beaten to pulp there is a chance my companion might revive me. A switch out of the gourd and I can beat that MF that did this to me.... lol
I wish the climbing was a bit more fluent, that some of the AI was a little more en par and the ganking when going into a wrong area was just a bit more forgiving. I think you rated it fair and I hope 4AA will make more of these games. I loved to play Journey as well on the PS4 such relaxing music.
Discovered your channel through this series. Ez clap, highly underrated youtuber
Just got around to watching this series as the game recently became available on gamepass. I agree with your comments, I thought the game was great. My biggest complaint was having to hold the lantern. I think that aspect of the game basically discouraged a 2 hand weapon use, and handicappped you when using a one hand weapon. If they ever come out with an Ashen 2, I'd love to them implement a belt hook for the lantern so it would free up your hand for a shield or a 2 handed weapon.
Children of Sissna? Feels like playing the villain.
Anyway, awesome playthrough enjoyed every single minute👌
i feel more like a one shot punching bag
Children of Sissna is actually a new game with lower health and stamina.
Love this game, totally surprised me how much i enjoyed, its that good i bought the dlc Nightstorm Isle.
now she looks like the effigies we saw a couple of chapters ago
i really like the commentary,its very detailed.really enjoyable gameplay.good job cowboy.👌👍
Agree with your review! I did enjoy this game and kudos to the developer. I thoroughly enjoyed your vids Cowboy!
This is a great game to watch
Some of the music reminds me of Morrowind and Gothic 3 which is quite nostalgic for me so enjoyed it a lot! :D
Good series thanks.
did he ever play the Nightmare Isle DLC?
I’m try it out
I enjoyed this game as well.
Hi, huge fan here! Are you going to play DLC, please please ? It came out few days ago
Does Cowboy ever go back and play the DLC?
After you've defeated the end boss and press continue ,is it normal you've got to defeat her again afterwards.
what if the companion you used the most other than sileran, died at the end, and you couldn't use them again. rip Elia
Yo are you going to play the DLC?
Last boss is a real srinker, too much RNG needed to beat her. Took me over an hour.
Is it normal to beat Sissna then after the credits for her still to be a questline uncompleted? ie still alive and you can fight her again? or was it my desperate button mashing to close the unskippable credits causing a restart behind the wall text I couldn't see as I heard menu actions occurring whilst forced to view who cleaned the toilets, etc etc etc x 125
n I agree this game needed 6 months of 1st preventing your companion from suiciding off ANY edge 2/ parrying 3/ weapon selecting (so many times trying to select a weapon nothing would happen or it'd store button presses and cycle through & past the item. Same applies to attacking. To cite Souls, if a heavy attack were started it could be cancelled with a light attack, but in this game it'd store your presses and continue way passed when you had stopped spamming as you had to to insure attacks happened enough - no "this enemy dies in 2 light, 1 heavy" guarentee button presses as 1 might not register... I could list a lot more niggles that soured my enjoyment but then there was only 1 listed "tester" in the credits conclusion, she needs replacing, obviously.
ok game, 7/10 - (i completed it so wasn't all bad, far from it, it just could haver been better & we all can see how, so why didnt the devs?) So yeah, would like to see a more polished Ashen 2 but the dev team have long moved on.
Yo check out any of the other SuperGiant games- Bastion, Transistor or Pyre. I’d recommend Bastion. It’s their first game and it’s great. It’s not short but it’s exactly long either so if you need to slow it down or anything that’s fine. It’s a great game and it’d be cool if you check it out. Hope you enjoy whatever you decide to do.
to me this is a 7, could have been a 9 if they added a parry riposte. the combat is the weakest part of this. looks beautiful, sounds amazing, and parkour is great. combat sucks, multiplayer connectivity needs more time to cook. this game is built around multiplayer, playing this game solo would have brought it down to a 5.5, the difficulty is not tuned for solo games. the lantern thing is a neat idea, it still feels the game needed more time to cook.
funny you found light hits is the only way to fight, i went the other end. i used a 2 hand, set 3 passives for extra damage, charged my heavy, release, back dodge, repeat. 3 hits for most groups, 1 or 2 hits for most basic units. switch to 1 hand for bosses or anything that does not die in 3 charged heavies, switched back to 2 hand for bosses when your shield does nothing to help you. partner carries the lantern.
great game
I love CowBoys Souls Like walktroughs, I played with them Dark Souls 3, Nioh 1 and 2, Sekiro and some more! ;)
And about last Boss... Actually key here is a like in other Souls Like, PATIENCE! Keep correct distance, not to far (to have problems with reaching attack when there is a "window") and not to short (to have time to dodge). And just fight! And IMHO this Boss is MUCH easier then previous one! This Ashen Shadow or smtg, as this Boss is just ONE, and this mthckr Shadow, summons many minions, especially in last stage!!! Actually same situation I had with Lords of the Fallen, Dark Souls 3... Before Last Boss was HARDER than last! :P
Quick question
Did you platinum the game after the whole walkthrough
@@FreakyCloud no. Only Souls I platinum, is Elden Ring.
@@engels1978 oh okay Thanks, most of Cowboy walkthrough lead me to a platinum of that game so didn’t know if Ashen was one them because it’s one of his older knes
@@FreakyCloud For DS3 even with Cowboy, I haven't got Platinum... I would probably need to do some save copies for other endings... I've done it for Elden 😉 And there were some Covenant things to make Platinum...
my jokell is broken
hes been so unhelpful in the 2nd half of the game
during the last boss he just decided to jump in the lil water pit, then just float there for 5 seconds then sink
he didnt even try to swim to the ledge and pull himself out, he didnt even get knocked in the water or dodge roll in the water, he just jumped right in to take a swim then rememebered he cant swim then sank and left me to 1v1 the last boss alone smh
and my game decided to corrupt my save file legit a mission before this one .. how great
Children of Sissna I was stuck at Lathyrus for 10 hours
12:26 LOL
This game went from an 8.5 to a 6.0 because of the ridiculously cheap Sissna fight. Like literally, if you don't lucky with the partner AI you're fucked. The game is designed to be played with the AI, yet it constantly gets itself killed or just disappears. Of the 10x that I tried to fight Sissna, 6 of those Jokell fell into the pool this g in the middle and disappeared.
Gave up after the 10th try. I died a total of 6 other times through the whole game. That fight is pure luck of the draw, or doing the 1 hit roll away tick damage game for an hour. The funnest part is having to run through the stupid cave back to Sissna after every death.
Unreasonable.
im givin this game a 7, some things i really like, some thingsa i really hate. like this boss and having to run through that cave everytime before fighting her. theres afew parts of this game that were waaaay too long without a checkpoint. just give us a checkpoint before the boss. the loading times in this game are terrible on ps4 pro and xbox series x, dont make us run through that crappy cave everytime too
Hello there
Nioh or Bloodborne? What do you like about each of those games?
@Christian Buch These 2 Games are so Diffrent .. If You Want to say the only thing these 2 have in common is bein hard. nioh and bb should be played but if you want a start play nioh because its more straight forward actions are faster and the game tells you what to do . combat is fair if u die for sure you made something wrong its not like you die from RNG and you dont know what happens like souls game are alike. item wise nioh is far suprior its like diablo. anyway both are great games but alot diffrents in them . if you want a start just go nioh then go on bloodborne
Cowboy will you do a life is strange playthrough ?
Is this Game Like DARK Souls?
I fuckin knew it
there is actually parrying in this game
80% of my fights were with two handed weapons and there is no blocking with two handed so i was dodging all the time i think thats a parry and its like dark souls in my opinion
dang i actually killed this boss in a cooler way than fightincowboy, like, it was closer cause my AI partner was dead and
Good series. Really enjoyed.
do children of sissna you will get your ass kick i went from dieing maybe 10 time normal game to dieing 1 mil in children of sissna
Enjoyable but not even close to Dark Souls 1, 2 or 3 in quality. Sorry but I played Ashen for a full 60 hours looking at it hard and hunting out items, weapons and trying to co-op. I loaded my Dark Souls 3 character & went to Lothric Castle... using pyromancy, then miracles and a little sorcery to spice things up. I threw fireballs (Chaos Bed Vestige) then a little Sacred Flame... then a Profane Flame spell. Back to my bonfire and I'm lobbing Crystal Soul Spears and great Soul Dregs. Take out a sword. Or a Demon Fist or a Glave... try on different pieces of armour. Need I say anything else? Or do I have to belabour the point? Ashen is a fun little game... like a go cart in your driveway. Fun for the kids. Dark Souls is a Helicopter in your private Hangar behind your house. Please don't compare.
